I absolutely love your summary of Arknights events + literary critic about them because: A-As you said, some events are bloated as hell with words and can be a slog to read through. The only two events I read through is Under tide and Stultifera navis because me simp abyss mommy. B-Even if it a event from a tower defend anime gacha game, any story should get a chance and analyse even if it from silly game. Arknights have good writing and not afraid to tackle hard topic with questionable quality but it always entartain to sit down and just look at a story of a beloved IP and talk about it pro and con. Been watching the LOR stream vods and hoping to get those done, I love your comment between story in stream + humour.

As much as I love Twilight of Wolumonde and believe to be the absolute peak of Arknights story telling (which is kinda depressing since that event was written more than 2 years ago if we count the CN server)... There is an argument to be had about the premise of that story. The entire plot relies on 2 questionnable things. First, that the... nobles I think? The ones responsible for running Wolumonde, would leave the city without any military force AND not care enough to keep themselves informed about its state, which is incredibly reckless because if anything bad happens, this will fall on them and heavily stain their reputation even if the alternative was displeasing a higher ranking noble. And second... was the best/only solution really to cause harm to prevent more harm by getting Wolumonde the attention it needed? I get that Thorwald was willing to save lives by any means necessary but he could have pressured the Messenger network to help him, heck, he could have outright lied that the very tragedy he ended up committing was happening. Worst case scenario, he gets no response in which case, his crime would have had no avail anyway, and that's unlikely because at the very least, the Rift and its consequences did happen. Basically my point is that there wasn't enough evidence to support the idea that Thorwald had no options left, and killing himself was a huge gamble anyway, gamble that he could have lost and even if he won it, he would still be dead which would prevent him from helping future cases, assuming he was allowed to continue working which to be fair, is unlikely after causing mass murder. A wonky premise is a common critique I have against stories, and sure, it's one of the least harmful issues a story might have, if anything because unlikely things can happen, but it's still the foundation and the weaker it is, the more the actual story has to compensate.

Great work on the vid, hope you get more out as time allows. I appreciate your informative and fair assessment. Hope for more quality content in the future. As far as AK events go, ToW was probably the best written story. I would say it's more of a mystery/criminal than a drama, but they are close enough. Thorwald didn't die in that fire. It was his unnamed friend/conspirator. We can see ice arts on Biederman's body, same arts were shown in epilogue when he talked to Biederman in his room and left ice arts on door. Read Mudrock Promotion Record for exact info. Thorwald tried to assassinate a noble to exact revenge for taking away Germanderie and indirectly causing events in Wolumonde to spiral down. Mudrock story is explained in vignette event from Rewinding Breeze, called Recollection.
@Word46

Yeah, I deliberately left the Mudrock Promo Record information out of the assessment here because it was added post-event and honestly doesn't change too terribly much about the event itself. If I cover Mudrock as a character in more depth like during Rewinding Breeze, I'll be sure to include the information.

I genuinely wonder if the Rhine Lab manga was made solely to make up for Mansfield, since it was released around Dorothy’s Vision in CN (the actual Rhine Lab event Mansfield was intended to hype up), and tells the events of the Diabolic Incident that involves Ifrit, Silence, and Saria, something we know about from their backstories but never got the complete details of, much like SilverAsh upon release, mentioning details from Break the Ice, which we wouldn’t get until well over a year later with said event. There are parts I enjoy with Mansfield, but nothing is really because of the titular break itself. It was one of the first events I noticed more 'effort' in the VN side, where scene exposition came more from the game and not a character, as well as movement of characters during scenes to feel more lively, as well as having more characters not in their usual attire or poses (imagine if Mountain or Kafka were in their Operator outfits instead Prison jumpsuits. Because, while the game's had it before, there are plenty of other times this happens, so I'm glad more characters are in more unique outfits. Hell, in Mountain's own Operator Record, he has his current outfit for his sprite while the dialogue describes him in a suit we never see). In fact, I like the Bar Scene because the Rhine Lab stuff is more interesting for me, from genuinely liking the politics side of such a discussion's meeting, and due to more interesting characters... yet, a majority of the reason I like them and the Lab's story is because of the Manga, and my bias from using Silence through most of my early time in the game... said politics in the bar are, again, handled better in the manga with the encounter with the Tin Man. I liked the event when I read it, but honestly, the manga just makes me wish it leaned harder into Rhine's history and how Anthony is an impact. Mansfield itself is fascinating as an idea, but doesn't deliver all too well, especially when, from what I know of Dorothy's Vision, there's really only a minor (still a spoiler, so I'll not say what exactly) bit involving Muelsyse that come out of this event. I got Kafka and Pinecone out of the event, and Mountain was a fascinating character, but the best thing about this event really is just the Manga coming out to do its job, but better...

I really genuinely think Arknights narratives could be digested so much better without those impulses to skip the cutscene if they make more additional new background illustrations and illustrations to convey more visual cues and contexts, I think the Stultifera Navis OST and Ebenholz stories tried to put a bit more of the additional contextual art assets on top a bit more trimmed dialogues, so I do think they listened to players

As much as I love most of the Rhine Labs storyline, I still have to agree with what you said in the video. The Silence x Mayer x Muelsyse part hinges entirely on your prior knowledge and investment into the characters involved, something that the event itself fails to provide and HG didn't really rectify until the Release of the RL manga prior to Dorothy's Vision. The way it interrupts the prison break itself feels jarring too. They should have left the bar scenes out initially letting the audience analyze the situation themselves just to have a final story segment between the aforementioned trio to finish it all off and set up future development. It doesn't fix every issue and I am certainly not a skilled writer but I believe it to be a better alternative. Btw, when can we expect an analysis of Guide Ahead? You seem to like it judging by that one joke in the intro and I would love to see your view on it.

First of all, thank you for shading light on Twilight of Wolumonde. I was still a relatively new player when I read ToW and saw its potential, yet I have already shared to people how great the story is. On top of the story, we have the theme of the event; the music, the missions hidden in riddles, and Tribulation stages, all cemented on my brain on how great this event is. Mansfield Break though; I had my fair share of prison break stories in media, and like what you said they just follow the 'planning and awaiting for the conflict to clash with their plans' story structure. But what I like of MB is that the jail break story was only one and of the two stories presented, the other being the conspiracy behind the jail break. It gave you a taste of what Rhine Lab is and what many characters' relationship with the company. Other than that, in my opinion, I really like Arknights' attempt on a jail break story.

It’s nice to see someone do a look into events like this. I bounced off hard with Mansfield because of all the cut away to the bar gang, and Wolumande was one of the better events Arknights has put out for me, writing wise. That said I wish Arknights dialed back some of the philosophical waxing everyone, including random mook npcs, do in the middle of combat. It can get pretty egregious sometimes. A lot of noise in its text to me. A rapid fire event thoughts on AK or maybe a breakdown of some fav FGO events (since you mention the game a bit) would be cool to see!
