This is the closest anyone has ever come to writing a novel in film form. It's fantastic.

I knew nothing about the real case when i watched the film so the ending truly destroyed me, the way Yang built the organic story and transformation of S'ir was one of the most artful depictions of a protagonist I've ever seen. No one captures humanity quite like him, this is really another masterpiece. Also if Cat isn't your favorite character in the film then there's something wrong with you hahaha...he's the best.

I go to this street often to eat at my friend’s restaurant and won’t see the street the same way after watching this film. This film took place when my mother who came from a middle class mainlander family was around 13 years old in Taipei. She used to tell me about how Taipei had a lot of gangs and that it was dangerous. It was very sad seeing the end knowing that that could have been my own mother at that age. The girl (Ming) didn’t deserve what happened to her, but you could see how her relationships with several of the characters led to her demise because it drove the main character literally insane with jealousy.

I've been watching some Hong Kong and Taiwan movies and they are great. I also discovered that in a city next to mine there's a cinema where I can see these movies. It's sad that I would have to go alone.

the way Edward Yang weaves all these stories and characters together is mindblowing to me. Xiao Si'r and his friends living in Taiwan during the white terror and searching for some type of identity is just so powerful. insane that a lot of these children were first time actors or relative novices at the time especially Chang Chen. I also love Honey. His role reminds me of Orson Welles' in The Third Man, a man who for the first hour of the film is discussed and mystified by the characters in the film as a sort of legendary figure, AND THEN HE APPEARS, having been built a fortress of legend to the character already. Love the line Honey says in the movie about books and War and Peace. also would agree that the scene where the camera pans to the door reflection of Xiao Si'r and Ming is one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever. Pure poetry via the use of camera and location.

this was also the first movie i had ever seen by Edward Yang the first time i watched it, kind of hard for his other movies to stack up to this for me, a completely perfect movie for me.

I thought Yi Yi would be my favourite Yang movie. I was wrong, this one takes the cake. Holy crap the man is a movie genius.

This is one on my favourite movies. I'm wondering, the protagonist and his friends are attending school in the evenings (night school), which add to the moody atmosphere of the film. Having class late in the evening feels almost surreal, like entering another world. But at the same time it gives the film something vaguely romantic. Do you know if there are/were really night schools for high school students in Taiwan?

100 percent this was and is still very common in Taiwan. Students stay at school until very late especially when studying for their final exams

06:19 I did not though that Yi YI was that pessimistic, to me the ending was very sweet. (excluding the story of the daughter's friend that was very bad)

that's true the ending arch of the son's character was very wholesome. I was thinking of the daughter's story and also the father's story with his work and ex lover
