And well, the actor here is JOHNEY WALKER. ( Its his screen name, his original name was BADRUDDIN QUAZI). He was more famous for his comic roles. You could see him in many classic 60s films. He was a regular feature in Guru Dutt's movies (Pyasa, Aar Paar, Baazi, Mr and Mrs 55, Kaghaz Ke Phool) apart from many others like MADHUMATI, ANAND, MUGHAL E AZAM, CHORI CHORI...

The song reflects the angst of the proletariat in a clash with the budding opulence and wealth created by capitalists. Bombay (or Mumbai now) pretty much symbolized that, with its huge influx of migrant work force and this theme of worker vs the wealthy businessman, was in evidence all the way into the late 70s.

Great reaction Matt. Yep that was pure gold. I've been recommending Neel Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein from Amrapali (1966) forever, but still no joy. You'll be so impressed with the classical dance - guaranteed. Absolutely more of the old classic songs - 50s, 60s for real music and lyrics with meaning. But my heart sank at the mention of Bhansali's Khamoshi. If you compare the current lot of songs with the classics, you'll notice the shallowness and noise that passes for music nowadays.

Oh I feel so sad hearing you say that. Bombay really has changed drastically, even from the 90s. And not in the best way. They haven't preserved the old charm of that time. All very commercialized. Apart from that, I'm happy to say that I was lucky to see Johnny Walker in person in the late 90s, as a kid i was super happy. He was sat in the car behind ours at a petrol pump

Just a small correction to what you said: Guru Dutt (India's Orson Welles) is no one from the Dutt family, it's his screen name. His films Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool, were among the top 160 greatest films of all times. Dutt himself is ranked No. 73 in the list of all-time greatest directors. A life full of tragedy, gone too soon.

Ah..beautiful Bombay as I remember it growing up. I believe the carriages are called a 'Victoria'...a vestige of our colonial past. The beautiful building is a main train station that used to be called Victoria Terminus..or "VT." Its now Chatrapati Shivaji station. The seaside promenade the Victoria is driving on is Marine Drive which still looks somewhat similar. Thank you Matthew for the trip to the past. Loved it.

Generation always change, now old 😒 generations are dying and people wants to live in a clean country 🙄, Aslo people want entertainment in bollywood not 80' 90's content which is being repeating, good ideas like this song always hit differently, and I guess this the actor has more expression than the "so called star kids actor" entire carrier 😂

Most of the major song writers in those days in cinema were from IPTA (Indian Peoples Theatre Association) a communist party aligned organisation. You can see more movies directed by Guru Dutt. I suggest watching "Pyasa" (Thirsty) , particularly the song "Ye duniya agar mil bhi jaye.." ( What if we even win the world).

I am so glad to find a channel which reacts to these gems. If possible, could you please react to "dekhi zamaane ki yaari, bichde sabhi baari baari" from kagaz ke phool? It's an old classic song from an unforgettable movie made by Guru Dutt, who also made Pyaasa, a movie which is quite pertinent to the social issues we face even today. The song I mentioned basically portrays how people forsake others when they are no longer "needed". The actor is Guru Dutt and he plays the role of a director who has been forgotten by his so-called fans. I would be really grateful if you could react to the song and even the movie later on if you like it. I hope you and your channel continue to prosper! Namaste and love from Delhi!

You should watch him in the 2000s movie Chachi 420. He's old but retains his comedic style. The 50s was just after our Independence. Socialism was popular with the Soviet influence. Hence the satirical take on life. Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, most of them were socialists.

Oh my dear Mr Brit, pls don't keep referring to your oft repeated one liner in your videos "...oh, this perhaps tells you about the Indian society of those times.."! No, not at all! The scenes you see in movies don't necessarily mirror Indian society, because these bollywood films, as you yourself agree, are / were a great source of escapism and fantasy spanning over 3 hours, playing inside the cinema halls. Don't interpret anything and everything that you see on-screen in hindi movies as true picturisation of Indian lives. Just enjoy them and move on. But pls do post more and more song videos of 50s to 80s Hindi movies. I promise, your viewership and subscribers will swell substantially! Thank you and God bless 🙏

It's great if you appreciate the film or the actor.. But don't do it to the song. It's a fraud and the truth needs to be exposed. Copied from the song "My Darling Clementine".. And this is one of the many hundreds and thousands of songs that our film industry shamelessly copies.

Seemed to me The theme of this song is similar to West side story. kzitem.info/news/bejne/yaWHq5iarXh_ZoYsi=Q1nBDTJkA7eAYlR8 Men complain about the morality of the society or city they live in, while women argue for possibilities of making plenty of money they can make in a big city and with it the comfort they can buy.
