How is it that an Englishman from Manchester, with a surname that is unpronounceable for any Venezuelan - Patrick Ohlenschlager - becomes a beloved character for hundreds of thousands of inhabitants of this land of ours and also of the many who are around the world, when he decides to travel the 24 states of Venezuela in 5 months with Juan Diasparra, a biologist he met online.
Well, it turns out that @patrickviaja was in Venezuela in 2022 for a few days, he felt very sad when he left, something that had never happened to a frequent traveler like him, he missed the affection of all the Venezuelans who spoiled him and cared for him and He decided that he had to return because this was a country that should be known by all human beings on the planet. During these five months he gained nearly 300,000 followers on his Instagram account, everyone loved him wherever he went, they invited him to inns, to try thousands of flavors, to unprecedented walks, to parties and even to a Venezuelan wedding in La Esmeralda to which an innkeeper lent him a suit.
Many people told him that he had to meet Valentina Quintero - ME - and travel with her, so Juan Diasparra called me and we agreed that I would accompany Patrick on his last trip and that the destination would be Canaima. We met at the airport before taking the plane and I immediately knew that this little English boy, barely 29 years old, was for real. That his amazement and love for Venezuela were genuine. That he wanted to show this country because he fell in love with its people, because they always treated him as if he were family.
Being his guide on his last trip was an absolute joy. I insisted on taking it to the community of Canaima that no one visits because we are our people and the Pemon people are fascinating. Yes, the dentists even attended to him at the clinic and we participated in a sharing with the sale of handicrafts and Pemón songs. At Campamento Canaima - where we stayed - they took the Kanaimö Choral Symphony one night and so Patrick learned that the Pemón have a privileged ear recognized by experts. We also took a helicopter ride because he wanted me to have the privilege of stepping on the top of Auyantepuy and seeing where Angel Falls fell from.
We were able to talk a lot about his emotions on this 5-month trip. His urgency to return to know Venezuela in depth. His thanks to Juan Diasparra, guide, friend and biologist. His doubts about the future. What to do with everything he recorded? How to share it? Patrick is a sensitive 29-year-old English boy, with an immense capacity for wonder, eager to bond with human beings. And what so many Venezuelans felt for him, believe me, he deserves it. He earned it!
