Something the original guy got wrong. It wasn't the queen that stayed in Canada, it was the crown princess. The queen herself spent most of the war in the UK. The hospital wasn't declared Dutch territory. Four rooms were declared extra territorial, meaning for the time she resided there, it was part of no country. Basically, as if you were born on the high seas. Canadian citizenship is through birth in the country, if you're born in Canada, you're Canadian. Dutch citizenship is through your parents. If one or both of your parents are Dutch, it doesn't matter where in the world you're born, you are a Dutch citizen. This created the dilemma: born on Canada, but to a Dutch mother. Her father was actually German. She would then automatically be both Canadian and Dutch. Even though she was the 3rd child, is her elder sisters would have been killed, she would have been in line. And the queen had to be fully Dutch. This way, by making where she was born part of no country, she would be fully Dutch. Two Canadian soilders were the ones that started the whole food drop. They took a jeep, and a white flag, and drove towards the German lines to try to get the top brass on both sides talking. One of those soilders was acclaimed author Farley Mowat.

Actually they didn't declare the hospital wing Dutch territory but they just made it not -Canadafor a minute and they did that so the princess didn't become a British national and she only have Dutch nationality (You get Dutch nationality if one of your parents is a Dutch national) A princess with dual nationality would bring a load of legal trouble with it.

Also, the Pennsylvania Dutch are Germans but we did migrate to the US a lot especially around the Michigan area.

Yes, multiple royal families took refuge in Canada during WWII. Also the original video is wrong. The labor and delivery ward at the Ottawa civic hospital was de-nationalized for the Dutch princess's birth so that she would not become a dual citizen. If she had become a dual citizen her rights to the Dutch thrown would be gone.

Also the Dutch Royal family originally took refuge in London, England during WWII and once London became too dangerous the Princess and her two young daughters were sent to Canada.

For years I've been at the parade to celebrate with the Canadians. Even though as a child I didn't understand it very well I loved the cars and to see those really happy old men. I know there's a video somewhere in the 90's and 00's where I must have been at. Now I'm older and I'm so glad my parents brought me there every year. Even though I didn't understand back then, I do now, and I'm grateful I got a chance to show my gratitude.

My city of Haarlem was liberated by the Canadian army. My grandparents were liberated in May 1945. Haarlem lies just west of Amsterdam, in the west of the country. It was one of the last parts of country that was liberated. They almost starved during the winter of ‘44-‘45, but managed to survive thanks to the food drops. Sadly, they past away some years ago. But again, thank you so much for liberating my country and my grandparents. And the Pennsylvania Dutch, aren’t actually Dutch. They are Germans actually. But we did have a colony called New Netherland in the 1600s. That capital was called New Amsterdam and a village was named after my city. That little place is not named New Amsterdam anymore. It’s now called New York.

Footage preview of the Dutch Resistance Group my Granddad belonged to and the 2 German opponents (Fallschirmjäger Regiment 6 & Marine Einsatz Kommando 40) they had to face for 136 days behind or on the front line under 1. Canadian Army command, but never received any kind of recognition. kzitem.info/news/bejne/qKtsvJamhn-noG0feature=shared The You-Tube series is to show who they actually had to face. You'll see why,how and where Fallschirmjäger Rgt.6 was deployed. At Oct.30 1944 the Resistance Group will come into view. After that MEK40 and the transformation of the Orde Dienst-Tholen into 9./Netherlands Interior Forces ST, Commando Brabant up to March 14 1945 where they were sent home to never hear from it again. The You-Tube series starts just prior, during and after Operation Market-Garden with all kinds of famous British , American and Canadian Army units , but you'll be surprised about the detailed information in each episode. German Parachute Regiment 6 and Battle Group Chill was sent to every hot spot on the Western side of what would become Hell's Highway to stabelize the numerous broken German frontlines. It was the Fire Brigade of Kurt Student. Episode 13 is f.i. about Friday October 13 1944 'Black Friday' Canadian Black Watch facing German Parachute Regiment 6 at the railway line east of Woensdrecht Village. Here are the episodes that are finished: kzitem.info/door/PLmZsQHKnBH0CtaiykT5e6UJZ8E-7XWY1A&si=VdhnCYpOK-J6JRv0 The men themselves never knew about the elite status of these German Troops. They only wanted to aid the Allied advance and end the war as soon as possible. And they knew about the huge losses. I'll hope you will agree that the Resistance Group deserve some kind of recognition after viewing the entire series. One note to this video. Officially the 9./Netherlands Interior Forces ST, Commando Brabant served with the 1.Canadian Army since December 4 1944. Twelve days prior to the start of the Battle of the Bulge, but the 1st Company already on October 10 1944. kzitem.info/news/bejne/rHucqadraaWHpIosi=pov4Aj2j8IUOW_Sv The adjacent sector to the west of III./Netherlands Interior Forces Commando Brabant where my Granddad served in during that period. kzitem.info8_LzRfAuARY?si=R_v6m8IRkAUPK_dz

@@DarthTigger I didn't know until my Granddad shortly opened up during the 50th Liberstion Anniversary of our hometown in 1994. One of the many WIA of a MEK40 raid received his woundbadge by mail that year and a view of the still living the Dutch Resistance Cross for being a Resistance Fighter, not for the 136 days on the front line under Allied Command.
