I have independently studied the origins of "A Christmas Carol," as part of a larger project, for 15 years. I've found overwhelming evidence that this story was written, as a spiritualist redemption novella, by Americans Mathew Franklin Whittier and his wife, Abby Poyen Whittier. Dickens hurriedly sensationalized and secularized it into a "Ghost Story of Christmas" to make some quick cash, within six weeks, in the fall of 1843. He pretended all his life that he had been the original author. There is evidence that he inadvertently admitted having obtained it from some other source, in the handwritten copy of the letter he wrote to Cornelius Felton, dated Jan. 2, 1844, in which he supposedly describes how he wrote the story.
