OMG, this is one of the first solos I've learned to play. Great song and solo. I think I was aware then (40 years ago), it was Bm/D pentatonic. I've learned it from a compilation double album that had all sorts of rock guitar songs, including Laila. Great vid mate. So happy I have patreon. I love the backing track. 💕💕💕

Awesome Lesson. Big Ronnie Wood fan here. Seen Ronnie playing both parts of Stones songs as Keith passes out on stage, lol. Champion.

I had the good fortune of seeing Ronnie, from 30 feet away, in 1975 with Rod the Mod...his last tour before joining the infamous band he's now with. It was evident he was going places and musical longevity would be on his side. Talent, charm and humility. There is always room for such qualities. A lot of young'uns could do well to observe him. Of course that scenario with the young Russian cocktail waitress whilst he was still married... boys will be boys. Ex- Wife Joanne got even by donating a few of his beloved mid- 50s Strats to charity...without Ronnie's permission. Thanks for posting this video, John. I could never make Maggie May sound quite right from tablature books. Cheers!

Awesome! I love this Maggie May solo from when it first was released in 1971 but never learned it. Ronnie is definitely underrated. BTW the Burgundy Revstar looks great!

My first gig was The Faces at the Queens Hall Leeds back 1973. Missed the last bus and walked seven miles back home, but still a great night. the only way it could have been improved would have been for Ronnie Lane to have still been in the band. I shall have to learn this.

Correct me if I am wrong but that pattern is root 2nd 4th 5th 6th? Does not major pentatonic have the major third not the 4th?

No matter what instrument Ronnie Wood plays - be it bass, guitar(s), pedal steel, harmonica etc....he's nearly always melodic. Just so under-rated, very much like this song's co-composer Martin Quittenton....just listen to his work on Dirty Old Town, Lady Day, Cut Across Shorty and my favourite Italian Girls.....who would have thought a classical guitar player's runs and riffs could be so rock and roll......?

Ron Wood was also the bass player on that track. He lied to Jeff Beck about being a bass player and two weeks later they were touring North America as The Jeff Beck Group.

Simple doesn't always mean easy (to play well). Just had a go at it and there are a lot of little embellishments there. It's not just running up & down the scale, well played John.

I like your style... Couldn’t help but notice the foldout bed/couch. Not a bad setup, the wife tosses you out of the room, you come down to everything that you love. It’s Heaven!😇 Joking 🙃, I’d never leave my own room or bed and me strife would never suggest it. Re Ronnie, You’re analyzing his solo and Ronnie never did that. He, as most don’t have the theory behind him to understand this. They just use their ears and patterns. Paralysis by Analysis, you’ve heard that before. I’ve been heavily educated in music ( who cares). My point is, if I analyzed my solos and which scales and arpeggios work best, I’d never get a note out, note would any of the greats. You can listen to all of the Jazz Masters ( not the guitar) and often hear them singing out every note of their solos. I’m writing more for the people here, not you. You know what I’m saying. Cheers mate!

Are you sure it is Ron Wood's solo? My ears aren't that great but it sounds to me that the solo is played on an acoustic guitar, maybe a nylon stringed one. So maybe it is Martin Quittenton, who was also on the Maggie May session and who was also the co-writer of the song.

When Ron was being interviewed in Guitarist magazine (I think) back in the 90s, he spoke about some of his classic guitar parts, including this one 👍

Love that ron wood style, no noodling just main notes. Rough and dirty, it's more rythm-lead playing mixture. Perfect together with keith Richards and Charlie watts. Well, i love the stones with mick Taylor. Fantastic works but that periode is long gone. Ronnie wood leads their Sound into a new direction. Some of the old Songs doesnt fit for Ronnie. No Problem with that huge catalog of Songs.
