I'm Canadian too but on the west coast-- we have a similar restaurant and it adds up very quickly. $40 CDN is about $29 USD, and is not out of line for a good restaurant meal, especially since they are probably using high quality ingredients (you mentioned they use pure maple syrup in the desserts, which is not cheap). And BTW, I have an eating disorder and was told at buffets to put everything I'm going to eat onto my tray at once (including appetizers, salads and dessert) so you can see it all and know what you're eating, rather than returning multiple times. Chantal got a lot of food but I'm betting she would have eaten more if she'd made multiple trips. And this plate of food is much less than we normally see her eat.

Yes! I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard that vegetarian food is health food. It can be, but it can also be junky fast food or foods full of cheese, butter, and carbs. It all depends on your starting ingredients and preparation methods. Mollie Katzen, author of the Moosewood Cookbook and one of the most recognized chefs for vegetarian cuisine, spoke about the change in her cooking style over the decades. In the 1970s, she used lots of milk, butter, potatoes, rice, and pastas in her recipes because she didn’t want her customers to be afraid of being hungry after eating her meals. But as we’ve become more open to plant-based eating, her foods have become lighter, simpler, and very seasonal. I think Chantal could learn a lot from Katzen, and maybe she should have gone to the bookstore to pick up one of Katzen’s cookbooks - as long as it’s a recent edition.

There was (possibly still is) a place like this in Vancouver that I used to go to every few weeks. It was SO, SO good! But quite expensive, even then. I eat mainly vegetarian anyways, but I could become a total vegetarian if I could eat at a place like this every day. In regards to why she didn't make several trips to the buffet instead of one big load.... the place in Vancouver I went to was just like this, but it wasn't like a normal buffet. They weighed the plate; it wasn't a set price like most buffets where you could then go back to the buffet as much as you wanted. So if you went back several times, they would weigh the plate every time and you'd pay again every time. Since Foodie mentioned that they weighed the plate, I imagine that the set up might be the same at this buffet as the one in Vancouver. That's why she loaded up everything the first time (although way too much!). Otherwise she'd have had to have the plate weighed each time and had to pay each time again. I used to only make one trip too to avoid having to have my plate weighed and paying again.

The ENTIRE reason Chantal doesn't want to stay in Canada is that she can NO LONGER AFFORD TO LIVE THERE on the only salary she currently makes, which is KZitem. I've been there myself. I moved between Paris and the U.S. a couple of times, and the U.S. rent price are shocking in the big cities - I actually pay less for a better, if much smaller, space here in Paris. I had to buy a car in the States (thanks Mama for the co-sign) and paid minimal rent to live downstairs at my Mom's to help me with the monthly payment (we both agreed to it and it worked out well). I raised my OWN rent after the first couple years by 30% cause thanks Mom, but you were giving me way too great a deal and it wasn't fair. Foodie can no longer afford to live in Canada, period and it's why she needs to get out of there. It's 100% why she wants to go back to Kuwait. She's Salad's beard - why else would the family agree, and then never include her in things like Ramadan. The Red room is all BS

I personally don't like restaurants like these because of budgeting anyway. She basically took two mains with the lasagna and the spanakopita. Spanakopita is normally an appetizer but that slice was a main.

I think her family brought her there to highlight her portion sizes are too big. Pay by weight when she is so concerned about money made her more aware of everything on her plate. The exact opposite of all you can eat buffet and she had to show self control designing her meal. Frustrated her but good idea from her family.

Had she gone for several courses, she would have eaten less and enjoyed the food more, but I’m guessing she’s embarrassed eating in public, especially at a buffet. I’m only guessing, but she probably thinks everyone is staring at her and talking about how much she eats. This is likely all in her head, but very real to her. When I see morbidly obese people at restaurants, I make a point not to stare or respond to anyone’s comments. I think they are likely already uncomfortable, and I don’t want to add to anyone’s discomfort. I wish FB would get it together and really try to get healthier, but that doesn’t seem like the likely outcome. If she really wanted to rebuild her brand and bring in new viewers to her platform, imagine what she could do with an honest health journey. Honest being the key. She could show everyone the pain and discomfort, and the non-scale victories, but she would have to really commit, otherwise people will spot another grift and move on.

My guess is that it was cafeteria-style: you go through the line once, pile everything you want, and then pay (vs a buffet, where you pay once and then get multiple plates). Still, though, she could have gotten less of everything and then gone back if she was still hungry. 2.7 pounds of food is hard to imagine! Edit: you said that spanakopita would be easy to make-- I would LOVE a video tutorial from you!

Have to give her the benefit of the doubt on this one. If I have to pay everytime I go up I would try to get as much in one trip as I could too. Honestly that business method would totally be a turn off for me. A lot of food is just HEAVY in general. Doesn't necessarily be bad for you or for that matter expensive to the restaurant owner. Rice is cheap as heck but can really drive up the weight.

She could have had 8 plates of smaller portions for the same price, and would have had multiple stories to be able to share. Next time I’m in Ottawa, I’m going to purposely go to The Green Door and show how incredibly delicious and AFFORDABLE this place truly is. I am guessing someone likely sighed very loudly when Chantal’s plate was weighed. That is embarrassing. Yeah, the food looks nice, but not when you’re playing JENGA with it! I guarantee, had she even split it in four plates of $10, slowed down to chew before hoovering, she would have enjoyed the meal, and been full by plate 3 max. If she was asked how anything specifically tasted, guaranteed she would only remember the items that were deep fried or covered in cheese (or both together).

I would be curious what the average person pays for dinner there. We have a similar restaurant in my city and the food is good quality so I don't find $40 CDN (about $29 USD) to be exorbitant. But I would think for most people it would be less, and she did choose heavy items. At the one in Vancouver, they let you purchase a few heavy items like samosas separately for a set price that's lower than they would cost by weight.
@Pixaley

@@slsilver481 there used to be one where I worked in a large city. Lunch prices had three options: salad price, salad/hot price, and hot price. Didn’t matter if the salad came out to 2lb, it was only ever going to be max $10. Where the restaurant really made its money was the salad/hot mix, because as Chantal proved, it could get very expensive. I’ve always been less of a meat eater, so I tended to bring a can of tuna (or cooked chicken, etc) to work, then grab the salad, and be able to enjoy it at my desk over the course of my afternoon. She is a gluttonous person, and if she cared about the value of a dollar, even her own, she would know that she should pace herself. We all know she’s a narcissist, so if someone else was buying, she felt entitled, and probably pouted because she only likely wouldn’t have been able to eat another plate at that price. And if it’s a solid meal, with drink and dessert, $40cdn is a good fancy dinner. But this was an appetiser at least for her.

$40 for a plate of food? Seriously? And she has the nerve to beg for money.
@slsilver481
Ай бұрын
Well to be fair it's a nice restaurant not fast food, and she got a lot of heavy items (like even the salads she chose are marinated). $40 CDN is about $29 USD. I would suspect the average meal there costs about $30 CDN which is not out of line with other good quality restaurants. I suspect Chantal's usual fast food bill for a single meal is around $30 CDN with delivery charges and tip.

If she went to this buffet style restaurant with her family, to me that shows they really do not care about her at all. You dont encourage or participate someone who has dozens of serious health issues, caused by food, to a restaurant, nevermind a fucki** buffet. Love from her family would be to not participate in her food choices. Love would be saying "sure, you can live with me for now, but you have to eat as recommended by your doctor and if you stray from that, go to a motel". Enabling someones poor choices is not love.

I agree if it had been an all you can eat buffet. But the food is mostly healthy. She ate a lot but it was still less than she usually eats, and better quality. This woman usually inhales 3,000 calories of fat and sugar and carbs at every meal, with almost no nutrients.

I've been watching for years, since the Bibi days. I don't feel a need to pepper my commentary with constant negativity; I'm a pretty optimistic person in general. You never know when a message will finally get through and there's plenty of snark and insults thrown her way. When it comes to the way she eats, she'll basically need to hear tips and guidelines over and over again until they sink in.

You know that $40 just about killed Chantal, as broke as she is. Her plate looked gross. I was vegan for 8 years and know my way around a vegan and a veggie plate. I can't tell if the food was unappetizing or just the way she had it piled on her plate, but I didn't want any (except the spanokopita. I'll eat that all day). I don't think she needed to get a salad first, but she could have gotten fewer items - I would have gotten item I don't make at home - and taken time to enjoy the food. Then determine if she were still hungry. Instead, she piles up her plate so she can stuff her face, as usual.
@foodieb

Yeah, you can easily gain weight or eat super unhealthy while still being vegetarian or vegan. I don't know why she picked such heavy foods - THEN ditched her family to sit in the car. What is she even doing over there, aside from eating?
