"Most people know only of Dust Mites and their bad reputation of causing allergies.
However, there is more to the Acarine Invertebrates...!
Unlike Spiders, their close relatives, mites found ways to colonise under water. There are thousands of aquatic mite species, mostly living in freshwater springs, streams, lakes and temporary pools, although some can be found in salt water.
Helped to swim by the long, hair-like structures covering their body and legs, mites are mostly benthos, meaning they live in the Benthic or bottom zone of a body of water, and are usually carnivorous or parasitic. Their diet may consist of eggs, larvae, pupae and prey animals such as Daphnia, Copepods, Ostracods, Oligochaete and Nematode worms, rotifers and other Mites!"
