Cannot stress enough that you should not order one from clockworkpi without doing your homework. The 90 business days listed on their website is a complete fabrication, with most people waiting over a year before seeing their unit, and the responses from clockworkpi all appear to be copy and pasted, with one user detailing how he received emails saying the order was being packed and then a month later it was back to just "being worked on". Posts on their user forum that ask questions or are critical get deleted by the mods. I asked for a shipping update after the 90 days was well and truly up (by several months) and they just cancelled my order without providing any information. They have shipped some (mostly to KZitem creators it seems) so it's unlikely to be an outright scam but you probably don't want to order one unless you have a lot of patience and don't mind if you eventually never get it.

Thanks! I'm actually designing an expansion card to take the RAK wisblocks to use with Meshtastic internally. Part of the reason I'm in no hurry though is the lack of software support. I think it would be an interesting device to communicate and have offline topo maps on while out in the wilderness.

I'm also looking forward to hearing if they have an upgrade path for CM5 when that is released. Would be nice to just drop in a new board! Glad to hear the keyboard feels good. Planning to use it as a remote server manager so lots of ssh and typing! Thanks for the unboxing!
@randomalleycat

I'd bet that the CM5 would physically have no issue because my understanding is that it should have the same pinout, my concern is that device specific drivers are going to take a while because they (Clockwork Pi) seem to be counting on the community to develop them. I think if someone makes an expansion card with ethernet and serial, this would be the perfect server room accessory, or if you want to use a dongle or can just use wifi, it would be great that way.

Honestly I don’t think it’s worth the wait in its current state. I feel like they had a really good design idea, but had to make a lot of compromises that added up over time to end up with a less than impressive final result.

Really cool device. The quality of the PCBs, components, and connectors is top-notch. Very cool take on a no-solder DIY kit. The case is a little rough I see, although I think the design and especially the back look great. I think at this price point that's probably as good as you're going to get. It seems like they could make the powder coat a bit thinner or use a better one. Wish I had a couple hundred dollars to waste :)
@randomalleycat

I completely agree, the PCBs are some of the best quality I have ever seen on anything. I really love the feel of the keyboard as well. I think if the case were fully machined and anodized, it would be perfect, but of course that would probably up the cost significantly. It's still better than plastic!

I have/had an open pandora but the hinge cracked on it and fixing it is going to be a whole thing, so I'd been considering one of these for my writing efforts when I'm out of the house and away from my PC, but the complaints about the delays made me nervous about pulling the trigger. I tried a Raspberry pi zero 2w because all I needed was Libre Office, but I could barely get it to boot into raspbian let alone pair a BT keyboard to it, so that plan died before I could buy it a screen and batteries. Eventually, I just bought an 8inch android tablet instead, but screen typing will always suck compared to a physical keyboard. -How long did this take to ship to you?- Never mind, it sounds from your comments like they're still struggling getting this out the door.
@randomalleycat

Yeah, 6 months still seems like what I would expect it to take. If I were doing what it sounds like you’re interested in, I’d seriously consider getting something from GPD. It’s more expensive, but it’s got a lot of functionality and is even more compact if you get their smallest. I guess I need to take a closer look at one of those soon!

Had my eye on these for a while now too, thanks for the neat walkthrough video. How much battery life does one get out of the 2 x 18650 ?.. (obviously depends on usage etc)> I Love the fact it can have Celullar. I'd really consider one of these for my earthquake "go box".
@randomalleycat

As you said, it definitely depends on usage, I can get at least a few hours out of it with regular usage just doing things like browsing the web, but games or video and it's not going to last more than an hour or two. For the price it's not bad, but I'm really considering getting something from GPD for a more serious portable/emergency backup device. This looks cooler though for sure.

it looks beautifull, but for me (and i know is not diy and a lot more pricey than this), but I think the definitive cyberdeck that you can buy now is a gpd win 4 and install linux on it. it has a keyboard and it uses a ryzen 8000s APU and it's really compact

I actually agree with you. To me it's a bit like a toy or an accessory. Even the company who makes it refers to it as a "fantasy console" on the box. Like it's meant for cosplay. As long as you see it like that, and can afford to waste the money on a toy, it makes sense from that perspective. That being said, I'm still on the fence whether I would recommend it to anyone. I think if anyone is coming to me for that recommendation, they probably shouldn't get it. Anyone who wants it probably won't be discouraged be me either. To be extra fair to the designers, I believe they meant it specifically for people who want to tinker with programming for RISC processors, and they only made the Pi version as a bit of an afterthought. For the RISC tinkerers, I really do think this isn't a bad choice.

I’m looking for something of this size but powerful. I do field work and carry around my tools. So a huge clunky laptop is not what I’m looking for. I need to be fast and as inconspicuous as possible. Pulling out a laptop and Wi-Fi adapter in public settings defeats everything. So my question is does this run Linux and would it be fitting for Red Teams Cybersecurity work? Which entails rfid hacking and WiFi Network Security Pen Testing?
