One of my group’s personal rules, especially when playing new players or decks, is if you miss three land drops in a row you pitch a card and go fetch a land from your deck. Saves a lot of time and frustration

These silly custom rules never improve the game. I remember a group having the rule that the lowest life player could not be attacked or burned. Just burned myself pre-combat to avoid being attacked

Before they switched shifts myself and a coworker would play a game on our 30 minute lunch break. When you factor in getting your food around, eating, and playing it didn't leave a lot of time for the game. So what we did was make a house rule called "All land out" . Which if you guessed by the name meant every land in your starting hand was put onto the battlefield turn 1

I hate that missing triggers is part of the “skill” of actual competitive magic. I don’t miss triggers much myself, but I play that cards must do what they are supposed to and my opponents shouldn’t be able to forget conveniently or not. I always tell people to take the missed trigger, good or bad result for me.

I'm half-way on this one. If a card says you must do something and they forget, we let them take the trigger anyways every time. But if the trigger says "you may" but you didn't, then the player requests to be allowed to take the trigger and is at the mercy of how the rest of the table votes. Sometimes we vote to let a person have a missed "you may" trigger for several reasons. Primarily they've been losing alot of games, or he's really popping off and we want to see it in all its glory, or he's playing such a complex strat we don't blame him for missing, or he had lethal and we genuinely can tell he planned it but missed a trigger by accident in the chaos of resolving stuff. We're alot more forgiving about missing triggers on your own turn. If you meant to interrupt someone else and missed the timing though, the answer is usually "lol, nope"

Otherwise, please pay attention to the game it's disrespectful to everyone's time that you're paying so little attention that you don't know what's happening on a very basic gamestate.

Differentiating between optional and must "triggers" is a bad way to separate them (because wotc changes how they template cards every so often), which is why competitive mtg separates them into beneficial and detrimental and who's responsibility it is to remember a (detrimental) trigger. How I like to handle triggers or rewinding is as long as no other player has made a decision based on what you did that you wanna rewind and it's still within a turn of it happening then I don't mind rewinding or letting a player have a trigger. Something that's annoying is when people forget triggers that benefit their opponents, primarily stuff like Howling Mine. It is the responsibility of the controller of the Howling Mine to remind each opponent.

If we forget a trigger and only see it turns after, the decision will be based on either if the permanent has a "when this happens, you may do xyz" abillity or a "do xyz whenever this happens". And also if that changes the whole board state after new informations was revealed. But generaly we let the take backsies happen because it's just better feeling to win knowing your opponent didn't lose out of a little mistake like not taping their land correctly.

@@quincysmith3831 It's an additional rule you can add to commander games. On the cards there are effects that are passive and activated by rolls. Every turn you can roll to leave the plane but if you roll chaos to have to stay and get a negative effect.

When I played I was always an advocate of “if you miss your land drop, scry 1 at end of turn”. Early game it can at least maybe do a little bit to help someone from being totally screwed while not breaking it, and late game people can skip their land drop to try to dig for something more impactful to kind of move the game along.

If this is a house rule for the entire game then If have to disagree with it. Scrying is too useful and can be abused. For an example i have a deck that i can pretty much dump all my lands into play so then after that id be "missing" land drops from that point forward and due to your "rule" id just be scrying every single end step.

Personally, instead of a Wish Board, I think the Wish cards could just be reworded to say you can grab things out of exile. Exile used to be 'Removed from the game', so it stands to reason you could wish for their return.

As long as someone isn't playing two card combos, I play with a special mulligan rule that limits shuffling. Draw your first hand of 7. If you're not sure, draw two separate hands of 7 after that. Pick one of the 3 and shuffle the other two in. If for some reason you can't play any of them, you're allowed to draw one more hand of 7 after shuffling (probably pile shuffling because your lands were clumped at the bottom of your deck). This is the DC Mulligan.

Our house rule for takesies backsies and missed optional triggers is that you roll a d20 every time and if you get a 1, you can‘t and for every additional time you need to roll higher, so the second time you lose with a 2 and so on. It‘s a lot more forgiving than the stuff I see in the comments but we have a new player in our group and it honestly leads to a lot of funny moments.

The only real house rule we've used is when you mulligan, set your cards aside and draw your new hand. Continue that until you have a hand you want to keep, then shuffle the set aside cards back in and finish the mulligan (put cards on bottom if necessary). That just speeds up the mulligan process so people won't be shuffling multiple times.

Me and my group sometimes like to play with the planes from Planechase, it adds a nice twist to it and it's really fun! Of course it brings one problem to the table, it extends the duration of the game a lot, but still really fun regardless!

I think something I've heard about is non-legendary commanders. Where you would be able to play pretty much any creature as your commander. I haven't put together any deck like this yet, but there are definitely a few creatures I have in mind that I would like to build around.

I'm sure there are tons of newer ones I'm not even thinking about (though tbf, they have been more focused around printing for commander lately, so most of the interesting creatures are legends). Just a few examples: - Soulfire Grandmaster - The classic answer to this question, and I'd personally love to make some kind of spell slingy deck around it - Phyrexian Obliterator - Come up with janky ways in mono black to get your opponents to deal damage to it. Not sure exactly how since you don't really have fight spells in black, but there has to be ways. Probably not the kind of deck that would make the table super happy though. - Pontiff of Blight - Not super original, but could be an interesting "go wide" black big mana deck - Skyward Eye Prophets - Now adays there are a ton of things similar to this, but still kinda intersting - Pristine Skywise - There has to be some good ways to abuse the protection. Probably a control card. - Corpsejack Menace - Hardened scales, the commander - Torrent Elemental - Not sure exactly how I would build it, but seems like it could be cool - Havengul Lich - This just seems like an insane graveyard commander. Kinda like carador without the green, but you can do it as many times as you want in a turn, and it doesn't have to be your own graveyard (though you would need ways to produce other colors of mana likely). - Ink-Treader Nephilim - Classic 4 color commander before they made the 2016 cycle - Carnage Gladiator - Rakdos attacks, cuz why not - High Priest of Penance - Its super abusable, but you will probably frustrate people - Captivating Vampire - A vampire commander that isn't Edgar - Consuming Aberration - Mill spellslinger - Champion of Stray Souls - Living death, the commadner - Scrap Trawler - If you want to have 30 min turns - Bringer of the ... W/U/B/R/G ... Dawn - Interesting abilities on 5 color commanders, And these are just a few examples. When you look back at the sets from around 5+ years ago, they were not as focused on commander, so there are a lot of really interesting non-legend commander options.

My group tried this once and we immediately decided it was a bad idea (mostly because of me). I went with dockside for commander got it a sac outlet and proceeded to win. Slower way was sac for infinite mana/storm then comet storm or grapeshot. Faster way was if the outlet was goblin bombardment. Granted if your playgroup doesn't combo then that kind of deck won't be seen but this group was very high tier.

@@dizzyblizzy2806 That just sounds like you didn't coordinate power levels. Same thing can happen in normal commander. What is stopping you from playing cEDH at your next normal commander game? And if you did coordinate power level, how can they really be mad that they were not prepared for a the combo potential of a mono red deck? Its not like you were packed with counters to protect your combo.

Thanks, Nerds. You convinced me to try out Moxfield and I now am absolutely hooked. I love the site and I need to rein in my use of the site before I get in trouble at work. I've used other ways to build decks, including other deckbuilding sites, and Moxfield is by far the easiest and most powerful resource that I've seen. If you use it in conjunction with Scryfall Tagger Tags, building a deck is stupid simple.

We have a Rule 0 for 5 to 6 players. We start the game with the person going last as the Monarch and it can't be taken away until the first turn cycle. Adding Monarch right away helps speed the game which especially needes in groups of more than 4 players.

30 Life commander is a house rule my playgroup likes. It makes Boros/Combat based decks more powerful and also makes pay life effects hurt just that little bit more. We also switch commander damage to just be half the normal life total so with 30 life, commander damage is 15.

Here's a house rule and my friends have been trying out and it's been working out pretty well. We took one of the rules from Tiny Leaders and added it to EDH. This one: Each player's starting hand size (before mulligans) is 8 minus the number of cards in their command zone (meaning 7 cards for regular commander or 6 cards for Partner commanders).

So overall I would say I loved this episode. Just started watching y’all’s channel. Been playing since ‘00, and edh since ‘11. I’ve taught A LOT of people how to play commander, but I must say… missed triggers is one thing I only let them miss so many times I’m a game. Reminding them every time doesn’t teach them their deck or to be better players (say forgetting that cards that trigger your cards either). I help them with the obvious trigger stacks but not every trigger.

My jankiest commander deck is an Emry deck that tries to win with battle of wits. Play spawnsire and change it's text with artificial evolution to pull in all the merfolk and shuffle them into deck. Its only won that way one time out of the ten or so wins I've gotten with it since I built it, but it was well worth the laughs.

One of the lgs’s I go to has a form of EDH with about 40 additional banned cards, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt/Vault, and Cyclonic Rift are some of the notable cards that are on the list. You can choose a pod playing with those restrictions, or not. We also use unlimited mulligans when there aren’t prizes involved. In some pods I play in we allow some un-cards as commanders.

Number one for my casual playgroup is if your about to lose the game do not dump your counters and spot removal to punish a specific player or set someone else up. Accept your lose and don’t interfere with the others cuz that’s not fun at all, you can retaliate against the person destroying you but don’t go all out.

3 strikes your out. 1 take back per game is totally understandable, none of us are pro players, 2 take backs per game, come on bro step it up, 3 take backs either you concede or have to buy beers for the table/take a slap/go last next game/ some kind of punishment unless your a new player.

Takesie-backsies are exactly there to speed up the game. Give me twice as much time per turn to read all the cards my opponents plays and think carefully about my play and I will make way less mistakes. If I play faster I might miss something obvious, but if I can take it back (before a new information happens like drawing a card or an opponent having a response) this will encourage me to play faster. If you say that after once or twice I can't do it anymore, I will just play more carfully (slower). Mage Knight is one of my favorite games. It super long though. In the rule book, the author explains that taking back plays actually speeds up the game!

@@fredouellet3160 "if I cant consistantly play poorly without consequences I'll ruin everyone elses time slowplaying" works exactly once before noone wants to play with you again, noone expects you to be perfect but in most commander games 3 takebacks is 1/3 or more of your turns. If you crash your car 1/3 of the times you drive it should you get to keep driving with no tickets?

I want to have fun playing commander, talking with other players, having a laugh. I do not want to concentrate only on the game and make sure I know and remember every cards you play with evey ability of the constantly growing numbers of cards with more and more texts it seems these days. If someone makes a play that's obviously a mistake (dismember on a 4/4 creature that is now 6/6 because of a combination of 2-3 other effects for example), I prefer taking it back than asking him to take more time thinking every play through. Obviously, there are example where taking back a play is not recommended, principaly when there is new information gained. Maybe I wouldn't want to play with you either...

I do one takeback a game and also triggers. As long as they notice they missed it in a reasonable time I'm happy with it. Often with the mulligan my group has an arrangement that we can have two basic lands and draw five but no mulligans if you take it. I really enjoy the 2nd player and so on scrying as well. Can't wait to try it out

My play group uses a mulligan rule "the Phoenician" each mulliganed hand goes on the bottom of the deck, then shuffle after. We keep a limit to 3 mulligans so it cant be exploited, but smooths out a lot of games

The house rule way we mulligan in my group is that you draw your starting 7 and if you don't like some of the cards you can pitch the cards you don't want. Then draw however many you pitched. You only get one though.

Instead of "takesies backsies" my table says "rescind", like one of us will ask, "can I rescind?". Never when it would drastically change the game, and they typically only have a few second grace period after the play. We just Love that word hahaha

House rules for my local group are super simple custom commanders are ok as long as there not too over powered proxys are allowed but they cant be cards worth over $75 (You can only play vs so many moats/tabernacles before you never wanna play again) 1 free mull but if you don't really get started we can start the game over just so everyone has fun.

Our house rule for missing triggers is that if it’s a “may” ability and you missed it, then you missed it. If it’s a trigger that must happen and it was missed, then it was supposed to happen, so we honor it

My group uses 3 forgiveness cards rules. U use one if u want to take back a mistake that happened on the same phase. Once u use all 3 cards that's it .

I think people get confused by combo. Combo wins dont happen out of nowhere, you just weren't aware of the threat. One thing I've noticed is that people really don't understand what is going on with other people's boards. I'll play a super threatening card and no one does anything, but I play a big fattie that has no chance of getting through and suddenly I draw all the removal. If you see tutors followed by anything that flickers, sacrifices, reduces cost or adds mana, that is the primary threat. Also, relatively few cards combo so it is easy to learn to watch out for the common ones.

2 card combos can come out of nowhere, but usually 3card+ combo do have some setup. But people erroneously group 2 and 4+ card combos together.

we have two rules in my house: 1: since we don't have that many multicolor legendary cards, we have the custom rule that all our uncommon legendaries have the partner keyword, that way we access 3 or 4 color mana commanders. 2: For our initial hand, we draw 10 cards and put back 3. if we have less than 2 mana, we show and redraw putting back 4 and so on. That way, we ensure we have a playable hand and we block the "i want the ideal starting hand" thing.

My rule with takesies backsies is "was your decision made using perfect information?" And if the answer is yes, you can change your mind. If you could've tapped better that's perfectly fine, it speeds up the game and it makes games more casual. If you want to chang who your bodyguard is protecting, that's not fine because you don't have perfect information on which creature people perceive as threats. Simplified it just means most on board mistakes are fine, stack mistakes are alright as long as no one's indicated they want to respond and removal spells are fine. Everything else, it's a teeth kiss and a sympathetic look unfortunately, it just breaks the flow of the game too much

For wish boards. I like bring 10, and the play group drafts each to stack to ban 1 cards. So you pass the wish board to the left, take out a card. Pass it, they take out a card, pass they take out a card and what makes it back to you is what you get.

Probably not a rule but when a player in the pod combos out while the other three players are still trying to establish a board (ex: combo out by turn 5), we kick that that player out as the "winner" and the other players keep playing. Nothing worse than having to restart a game when the game hasn't even started.

I feel like this creates a bad environment. It’s great if everyone is agreeable to it, but if I was the one that comboed out like that and then the game goes 10~15 more turns. I’m just sitting there doing nothing. Yeah I went off, but what if that was the one god hand my deck can produce? If we go to another game, the likely hood of me doing it again just got shuffled away so we can all enjoy another game. I dont know I play at lower power levels where decks aren’t as consistent so something like that doesn’t happen often so punishing the player that got “lucky” doesn’t make sense to me.

I agree with the other commentor this feels like it creates a hostile environment. Magic is a highly rng and luck based game, why should someone be shunned and isolated for keeping a god hand? Its just not fun for anyone in that situation and better to move onto a new game. If the person is playing decks or cards where this happens almost every game then I can understand some action being taken. But that action should be direct and in the form of talking with the person, not just isolating them from the group.

@@MrDesoron it was the case where the other three players were in an agreement. To give a bit more context, the game I played last nite had that one combo player that tutored at least 3 times the turn before going infinite while everybody else was at 3 lands and at most 1 or 2 other non-land permanents. As the video said, the combo deck had nothing but combo pieces and tutors to get the win with no interaction. In most games I've played where a player combos off, it's never fun for the other three regardless of if they held back or not.

That's a good idea. For those who don't like it because someone will wait an hour after comboing off, I would argue that it'll encourage him to have less or no combos in his deck or at least fast/2 cards combos. It'll even give him time to take them out of his decks for the next game. If this is a higher power table and everyone is running combos, than obviously you don't use that rule! Pub stomping isn't fun, so let the one doing it get some of the bad vibes. He can always choose not to combo off. If you have a casual deck and draw a god hand, you can choose to wait for playing the sol ring or other card that would make this game busted so everyone has more fun...

@@fredouellet3160 Or you could talk to the player like an adult rather than beating around the bush avoiding direct confrontation. Some people have hard times picking up certain social queues, so by not being direct you give them no actual reason to do anything of the things you listed, and so they will just keep playing the same way, which doesn't help anyone and just leads to tensions rising until they finally boil over in a heated argument. Really the best thing would be to just rule 0 certain cards or playstyles, rather than this petty bs

One we do is "1 or less, 6 or more lands in your opening hand, you get to use one free mulligan". It's helped games feel a lot more fair, while also still punishing deckbuilding that tries to sneak too few lands into the deck.

Here’s one I would like to try: last two players win. It encourages team-building and politics which I think is fun. It also allows games to end faster because the last two people don’t have to fight it out. So you get to play more games! And there are twice as many winners!

The custom mulligan rule my group does is that after your first free mulligan, you only get another free one if you have a 0 or 1 land hand. But we also all play decks with normal manabase's so no one usually does more than 2 or 3 at most

I usually played in a powered down meta so a lot of the time if someone won within the first five turns we would just say they won and then continue to play three playered without them. It really helped keep unfun tactics out of the play group.

Disclaimer: I'm a great sucker for stats. I keep a excel spreadsheet of all my decks with the end résult of the pod, positionning in the pod, manadeath, manafull, whatever. Since i play a litteral lot on spelltable since late 2020 ( 3 to 4 days a week, 2 games by night ) i have an awful lot a games recorded, 313 exactly. So when you talked about the advantage of going first, i opened the spreadsheet to sse if it was consistent with my experience. Keep in mind that i play a lot of different deck, against a lot of different opponent and there could be a lot of other variable that could explain the result, so take it with a grain of salt. Also i only record my placing and position, so i can only answer to a tangent question that is: "How much did i win when i was placed.....?" With no further ado, here are my personnal results: Number of win when placed first: 81 Number of win when placed second: 102 Number of win when placed third: 72 Number of win when placed fourth: 58 I'd really like to have access to a bigger database... i'd say around 5 to 10 thousand games, to see if the tendency is the same on a big number of games... A catch-up rule we sometimes use when someone is bad on lands is a cultivate for the cost of tucking two cards from your hand

My play group usually does one free mulligan, two mulligans at six, two mulligans at five, etc. We do generally play higher power decks, so the “mulliganning until a playable hand” doesn’t work well.

Very good house rules although I personally don't understand the hate for sol ring. Its cheap enough that everyone can have it and if you play it, you usuallu will become more of a target and its not good enough that you can end the game with it. In most games I play, usually the person who doesn't get good ramp, like a sol ring, wins because they aren't a target.

Our house rule is scry 2 at the beginning of the game to see if you want to keep your hand. Prevents a lot of mulligans, and it's a fun casual house rule.

I feel like if you're playing Casual (where you don't run fast mana generally, and do not run 'good' combos/tutors), you can offer more freedom during mulligans. I generally keep 'statistically normal' hands, so I tend to pitch hands that are overly short of lands or overly heavy on them. In Casual, it usually doesn't matter as much if your hand is 'good', you just want some lands and ramp so you can play. Most decks btw expect between 2 and 3 lands, you need a ton of lands to expect 3 in 7 drawn cards. Anyways, in Casual there is no reason you should keep a hand that won't be playable, but if someone is running a more pushed deck it's on them to be 'honest' and not abuse this, but I tend to prefer strict mulligan rules for higher power games, let alone cEDH (though again, if people are just having fun/testing decks, it's important nobody get stuck with statistically abnormal (and bad) hands. I'm also a fan of letting people 'call' the type of card they want on top of their deck, and if it's not there (it's almost always land or creature, usually land), they mulligan, if it's there they get to keep their hand that should 'let them play' at least. During Casual games, if someone starts missing a bunch of lands (by the standards for what their deck can expect to hit), what I do is scry non-lands to the bottom for free until they hit a land. There is no point in having a player do literally nothing because they weren't lucky, we're not playing for stakes. There is a big difference between missing 2 or 3 drops and cheating to a land and making them miss 10 in a row because the RNG decided to have a good laugh. Even if you've got 3 lands in your opener, you might be counting on hitting your 4th, and if you don't hit it (or any ramp), which can easily happen, you aren't done until you've missed a few more. Missing 3 in a row is a disaster, and it's very easy to just not draw lands in 100 card singleton, even if you've got lots of lands. To use this rule you need to know roughly how many lands you would expect to see, so use a hypergeometric calculator maybe. It's technically a rule adjustment, but I don't think people need to mention gold border cards or 'art cards' being used as 'proxies', I literally couldn't care any less if people save a few bucks and use these. For most proxies I like a head's up, but it's not going to be a big issue as long as you're playing an appropriate deck. Oh, sorta related, but you should know what your non-native language/textless cards do, in detail. If you're still testing stuff you can use Scryfall or something, but ideally you should just memorize them. Take-backs can be minor (having brain farts shouldn't result in punishment in Casual), but if you've not pretty much just done whatever it is, you probably should just put up with things as is. Adjusting how you tap your lands AFAIK is fine until you use the mana, but it's not rare for someone to tap badly and play something out before they realize it. In cEDH this should cost you something, but in Casual it's more debatable. Rule of thumb, if anyone else has done anything (or had priority to do something and didn't), you should hesitate to take-back, you now have game information which can be very helpful. TBH, most Casual games aren't decided by a bad tap choice, mana errors are much rarer if your deck is only 2 colours, especially since you run less mana picky cards/decks. They were talking on Goldfish about giving people Scry as a bonus for not going first, which probably makes more sense in less casual games. Scry 1 for going 2nd, 2 for 3rd, and 3 for 4th. Usually this doesn't matter much in Casual, as people aren't going very fast, but in High Power and up I feel like you probably want to offer something, at least to the poor guy going 4th. In cEDH I think it's even more important, people could have won already, and you couldn't even interact with your U counters like Dispel because you haven't hit a land drop yet, so there you could be more generous. I do have Casual decks that prefer to go first (one runs 4 of those old Storage lands, always nice to go first and waste it on one of those!), and would still go first even if I lose out on Scry, but most Casual decks I have would just take the Scry I suspect.

Once I played a rampspell and i was like "I'm going to search for a basic but is it okay to put it into play under this guys control. Is that cool with the table?" and everybody was saying it was a cool move. Guy was manascrewed as hell by keeping land-solring and sitting there for 5 turns straight doing nothing but discarding in mono-white

Instead of saying "Takesy-Baksies", my group says "Omega 13" (bonus points if you know where it came from). So, what we will say/hear is, "Can I Omega 13 that...?" And yes, it's more for Mana fixing - meant to tap THIS land cuz you were saving THAT Mana for what they were gonna play right after it. It's usually little stuff.

In my playgroup if you went first you can't participate in the roll off until everyone else went first again. Assures at least every 4 games everyone starts at least once.

I cool rule I have thought about try is treating sol ring like a commander. Everyone starts with it in the command zone and if it gets destroyed it cost 2 more to cast it. Not sure if it will help the "one player gets so far ahead" problem. Let me know what you guys and everyone else in the comments thinks.

The thing about the hybrid mana thing, a lot of people want it for Deathrite. But Deathrite, in decks without both Black and Green, it can’t activate all of its abilities. So the rule would have to be something like, “If you can cast the card and activate all of its abilities…” BUT then it begs the question about Phyrexian mana. So I’m of the opinion that the rule is just a lot cleaner the way it is. Keep the rule as is.

So for me I word the rule as "hybrid mana doesn't count against you for color identity." Meaning just having a green/black pip in a mono green deck is okay. Deathrite has a black pip and a green pip so it doesn't fly with that rule. I've never had anyone try to argue that Phyrexian is hybrid mana because it isn't so no worries there.

Not that there aren't points to be made in favour of keeping the rule, but Deathrite Shaman is a really bad example, because it has both (single) mana symbols on it - its colour identity would be black and green even if it wasn't hybrid.

I use "hybrid mana may count as either or both of it's colors for the purpose of color identity (colorless is not a color)." Keeps phyrexian and twobrid as monocolor (although honestly I don't think Beseech the Queen or Flame Javelin would break anything in a format that has Planar Portal and Walking Ballista, but I'm willing to compromise).

House rules I use when playing with my friends are 3 free mulligans and we're lenient on misplays. We play to have fun and nobody has fun when they lose to a bad hand or a mistake in timing.

I'm not a big fan of the "no combo" house rule, because a lot of my decks revolve around synergies that could be gray area "combos," that may or may not be infinite, depending on which hodge podge of pieces are available. But I'm upfront before the game in disclosing what my deck can (and can't) do before games. And being open and honest before a game starts can take a lot of the sting out of me assembling some 5 card value loop.

I have an Extus deck that, if I get one or two of my good token generators, And some death triggers, And Pitiless plunderer, And Thallise, And no-one just solves some of those before I get them out (Also the deck has no tutors in it) then yeah, it goes crazy, casts Awaken the Blood Avatar 4+ times a turn and gets a boatload of death triggers. But every part of that "Critical mass" is just "A card that works well in the deck". It's not designed to build that engine, it's just designed to use each of those cards separately. It's not my fault if I happen to get them, and the three other players don't use solutions. I get not wanting 2 or 3 card infinite combos, especially with tutors, they can turn games repetitive fast. But to me, "Critical mass" just means "You built your deck well, and no-one stopped you."

House Mulligan Rule : If you would miss your second consecutive land drop at any point in the game, you may discard two cards at random to reveal from top of library for your next two basic lands. Place all discarded cards at bottom of the deck. Shuffle your deck at the end of your end step.

I like letting wish spells pull things from exile. Teferi's Pro can be a problem, but it makes games crazy without taking up to much time like searching your collection would.

One of my favorite deck is my Grusilda deck. Its a rakdos reanimator deck with no real combos or synergies with Grusilda. My playgroup is okay with it and its so much fun. And I run krark other thumb in my delina deck because why not (we have the same exact card but better in non silver border).

One of my favorite stupid house rules is every non land permanent in your hand has cheaty face rules. My play group also decided to add the rule of you lose 5 life if your caught and it’s a really fun time

To touch on the Custom Mulligan point: our play group uses the restart rule, meaning if each player takes at least 1 mulligan, everyone gets to make that many full 7 mulligans. Aka a game restart, and the first Mulligan is free. Example: I go first, Mulligan for free once, am iffy on my hand I wait. Each other player does the same, then because every player took one Mulligan the offer is made that anyone can free Mulligan a second time without going to 6. ( We also do the exile Mulligan, where you draw 7, place it face down, draw a new 7 and choose between the two on the first hand) but I digress

Hybrid mana is definitely something I’d be willing to try, I just feel like giving people a Deathrite Shaman in a non gb deck could be really bad. Granted, that’s the scariest card I can think of and definitely the one people go to when they’re arguing against this, so maybe just say no shaman and see where it goes

Deathrite would still be unavailable if you don't have both. It has a normal black mana symbol in it's "Exile an instant or sorcery" and a normal green symbol in it's "Exile a creature" abilities.

I can really understand the no combo/tutor rule. I like to play fairly combat-heavy decks and the games where I've taken out 2/3 opponents and would easily kill the final player on my next turn only for them to combo out of nowhere are super frustrating.

I enjoy infect but it is hard to infect someone out not to mention the whole table. Most of the time I see infect do the there thing and knock out one player then another player knocks theme out. Theses customer effects were interesting

I tried to get that house rule implemented at my LGS but they wouldn't go for it. So I built my "Yes" deck to offset the "No" decks. All of my nonland cards either have Split Second or "can't be countered." Suck it, Blue!

The reason I push back against the "mulligan until you have a playable hand" rule is that it rewards sloppy deck building. A LOT of people at my LGS like to run 33 or less lands in their casual decks. I run 36+ to avoid excessive mulligans. This rule rewards irresponsibility. Outside of newbie games, there should always be restrictions on mulligans.

I’ve never understood this obsession lots of players have for playing as many games as possible in a night. If everyone is doing things, long games are fun. I thought EDH is meant to be the social game. We chill out and do cool splashy things and convoluted combos. Surely fast games are the opposite of what we want to be doing if we aren’t playing fast mana, tutors and we remove nine card win the games and fast combos.

3 simple house rules for us... No Sol Ring before turn 3. 3 max tutors. Once per game during their turn, each player can either a) exile a card from their hand to put a basic land into play (not from deck) or b) exile a land card in their hand to draw a card (random, i.e. not from top).

Are you a friend of mine with a youtube name that I don't know? We have quite similar rules. Same for sol ring untill turn 3. Also, 3rd rule is the same, I've never seen anyone outside our playgroup using it, I thought we were clever "inventing" that rule! We add that if you have 0, 1, 6 or 7 lands you can show your hand for a free mulligan. Also, for the tutor rule, we decided that if you have a tutor that is restricted in vintage (demonic tutor for example) you can only have 1 instead of 3.

What do you do if you cannot find groups that want to play to your preferences? Like lets say you dont have the access or want to play fast mana, how can you assure you will be able to make that a adhered to “rule” with who you play with?
