If you are an adventurous person and planning to dog sled in the Arctic Circle, you want to dress properly (Artic Circle, Finnish Lapland, Rovaniemi). Because you want to feel safe and comfortable while being outdoors in winter Lapland for an extended period of time. (Winter Average 0C to -35C / 32F to -31F. If it is colder - the tour will be canceled) During my last dog sledding experience in Finland, 2 people had to turn back in the middle of the tour, because they were too cold. And we do not want it, right? Here is your complete dressing guide, and it is going to be easy and cheap because most of it you already have at home and the rest will be provided by your tour operator (Bearhill Husky Tours). To dress properly for the dog sledding, we start with The base layer - socks, leggings, and top. It can be thermal or just soft, stretchy, and comfortably tight to your body. It is important to wear wool or artificial fibers (my favorite is 32Degrees.com - cheap and good quality) but not cotton! Especially no cotton socks as they will get wet, cold, and spoil your experience. The second layer is a fleece layer of socks, pants, and jacket.
The top, heavy layer starts with the real thick wool socks. I have my own, but if you don’t - no worries, the company will lend it to you. You need to bring a pair of warm winter pants. And wear your own winter jacket. The jacket I had consisted of two layers. The bottom jacket is warm and soft and the top jacket with the hood provides excellent wind and moisture protection. The company will lend you winter boots with thermal liners, winter hat, and winter mittens. If your fingers are easily cold, you can wear your own gloves under the mittens, but I did not find it necessary. You will get a complimentary thermal tube scarf to protect your face and neck, and I found it very useful. Also, the company will lend you a thermal outer overall - that is like a big jumper that goes over all your clothes. I loved it. It keeps you warm and cozy. You are not recommended to wear any snow goggles as they tend to fog up, impair your vision, and cause driving accidents. And the last one. As closer you are to the North Pole and Winter Solstice, as more darkness you will have, and may need a flashlight. Winter Solstice in Lapland is around December 22 the shortest day of the year) A few years ago, when we dog sled in Kiruna, Sweden, Arctic Circle, because it was pitch dark all day long, we were provided with a helmet and a flashlight. But in today’s experience, we did not need that (December 4th)
