RTW are great! I'm working now on doing 2 using the end of one to start the 2nd. I'm in Thailand and taking a repositioning flight to Japan to start the RTW saves a lot of $. Starting/ending in Tokyo saves nearly $2500/ticket (business class) for the same itinerary. Between both trips, we can come back to Thailand for several months until we're ready to travel again and start the next one. That is when we complete the first one by returning to Tokyo. As long as it is within a year of the original departure it works really well. We can't make it work every year but it works really well for the next 2 years.

Our first RTW was Singapore to Singapore with Tokyo being the penultimate destination. From Tokyo, we had to urgently go to the US and a return ticket was working out more than a new RTW ticket! So we bought another RTW ticket with Tokyo as the start and end destination and did a stopover in Europe and got to visit some family and friends too.

Thanks again for reassuring me regarding buying a Star Alliance RTW directly from the site. I had a lot of hesitations because they only have communications through emails. After Watching your video I decided to take a chance and the process went very smoothly. I have not started the trip yet but with the experience I just had when finalizing the booking, i feel confident that it will be easy to contact and get responses from the customer service desk if needed during my trip.

What about visas for each country most countries Tourist visa is valid for 90 to 180 days so how did you plan
@TheFIREdCouple

Need to plan in advance. We didn't stay more than 90 days in one country.

Forever travelers like me, around the world tickets provide the most cost-efficient option however in current scenario, the baggage policy is most confusing. For example I am planning a trip from Toronto to Amsterdam to Dubai to Delhi to Singapore to Sydney to Vancouver and to back to Toronto. Now most airlines do have a two-piece check-in baggage policy however Air Canada has one piece baggage policy. But when you check on the Star Alliance website it says to 2 piece. And that's where the confusion begins. Because once you are at the airport and you are supposed to pay $180 extra for the extra piece of luggage more than one piece then this does not make any sense.
@TheFIREdCouple

We had similar issues on the luggage part but we mailed to Star Alliance and they made sure to put the luggage policy across all tickets. So we were able to manage this with Air Canada (but frustratingly they were the only airline that made an issue with even half a kg excess baggage weight. Had to reshuffle the bags at check-in!).

Visa approvals depends on the countries that you are traveling to. Some countries have decent visa approval rate but have a long wait time (e.g. Canada) while other countries have quick response time but very strict approval guidelines (e.g. Schengen). In addition the the visa, you should also plan in advance for the health cover. Getting health insurances for more than 6 months of travel becomes an issue.

@@TheFIREdCouple I will be 34 years in 2026 and maintaining good fitness, still is health insurance an issue? . Canada is not my list, i got cousins in the USA and i want to travel to Latin countries, Europe, Japan and a few other countries which fall on my route. My biggest concern is visa because of my blank passport.

Excellent Vlog, thank you! I have done a RTW with OneWorld. I'm in the planning stage of doing one with Star Alliance now. Maybe I missed this from your video, but have you completed your trip yet? We also decided to purchase the tickets instead of using points. Did you purchased yours on the Star Alliance RTW site? If so, who do you contact if you need to make changes as they don't have a calling center. That is my hesitation in purchasing on that site as opposed to purchasing through one of the airlines directly.
@TheFIREdCouple

Thanks for appreciating the Vlog! Interestingly by now we have completed two RTW tickets. :-) Yes they don't have a contact center but a mailbox. We found them quite responsive (generally responding back within an hour). Fortunately we never had a situation where we needed an immediate response but we did change our dates and destinations a few times and each time it went very smooth with their mail (actually we found the mail option better as we were able do a back-and-forth on different flight options, check availability and take our time to think accordingly for the changes and impact).

@@TheFIREdCouple That is exactly the information I was looking for. Unfortunately most of the information out there is for award tickets. The little info I find regarding cash tickets is mostly for OneWorld. The info I found regarding StarAlliance is very confusing on who issues the tickets and how to get help with changes along the way if needed. Your experience gives me confidence to go ahead and book on the *A RTW site. I forgot if you mentioned it but once you purchase and have the confirmation #, are you able to reserve your seats?
@TheFIREdCouple
Ай бұрын
The tickets are issued by the RTW team (generally in a Lufthansa emailer). But the confirmation number works on all the Star Alliance airline sites. One can go to the individual airline sites and select meals, seats, additional baggage options etc. The changes can only be handled by the RTW helpdesk. Interestingly, we were able to see our entire itinerary and change seats on most of the Star Alliance airline sites (e.g. changing united seats on Lufthansa site, Singapore Airlines on Air Canada site...),

I'm just learning of these RTW ticket options. The cost is big value compared to a standard long haul out and back ticket. The Star Alliance RTW tool is certainty fun to use but I wonder if using a travel agent for this is better as they can tackle any issues that come up and help make sure each leg the trip is optimized with the best planes and layovers etc.
@TheFIREdCouple
15 күн бұрын
Yes, if one compares with just a standard return ticket, then the RTW ticket could work out more expensive (interestingly, we were once looking for a Tokyo-New York return flight during a peak season and found that an RTW ticket worked out cheaper than that!). Travel agent can help for sure with the planning but not sure if they can issue an RTW ticket. Worth checking.

What about the visas? Indian Passport is a shitty one and to get SCHENGEN visa one need to put in exact flight dates and accomodation proofs. Please make a video on how to getting visas post retirement. SCHENGEN visa for early retired FIRED individuals is hard to get due to all the restrictions and documents required
@TheFIREdCouple

Yes, you are right. World travel with Indian passport would not be easy but its still feasible. Many Caribbean, Asian, African (our next destination probably) countries provide visa on arrival or visa-free entry for Indians. Some countries like Japan have started e-visa and even Schengen has introduced some changes which will make it easier for frequent travellers to get a visa.
