Wildfire in Alberta, Fort McMurray, in April 2016 was the trigger of this idea. This is a simple test to show proof of concept for fighting wildfire in the forest. I am aware that scale and size does matter but it is just a brain-storm and proof of concept. The idea may not perfectly work but it is worth it to share with others and collect the idea of the others specialty for cutting trees in a very short time. Contribution of all people around the world who visit this video may generate an effective method for controlling wildfire in the forest and saves billions of dollars and saves lives and nature.
The test proves strongly that the perfect situation for wildfire is vertical dry or semi dry trees. When a tree is standing (vertically) it behaves such as a chimney. It sucks the air at the bottom on the ground and pushes it up. Air goes up vertically and provides oxygen for the entire surface of the tree. It makes a perfect situation for perfect oxidation. It helps dramatically to burn the entire tree quickly. This phenomenon makes a tall wall of flame and can quickly be spread to the other adjacent trees. It will be spread in all directions. To slow down it, a corridor of horizontal trees will help extremely. The vertical trees should be cut and leave them horizontally on the ground. This pathway makes a disturbance for spreading of coming fire to this area. Horizontal dry wood are good fuel but it is hard to maintain the oxygen on the surface of the horizontal wood log. This will reduce the speed of spreading of fire and give more time to the firefighters to bring the fire under control. The width of pathway of fallen horizontal trees is very important to slow down the spreading of the fire. It depends on the height of the vertical trees, the orientation of fallen horizontal trees, the size of branches (top of the tree), and type of tree, dryness of the forest, wind direction and speed. The orientation of fallen tree is important too. It is better to keep the top branches of first row toward the fire and last row the opposite direction.
Considering this situation, logistics and timing are important. As a brain-storm (I am not expert in this field), explosive material may be used by the experts to cut the trees quickly.
Volunteers with chain saw can help to cut the smaller tree under supervision of an expert firefighter. There are some special crane (www.ponsse.com/..., please visit • Ponsse Bear 2015 model... to see how this monster works) that can handle this job quickly. A handful of those cutting methods can make a pathway quickly in an area that fire will reach there soon according to the forecast.
If a pathway (fallen horizontal trees) with proper width is generated it helps to slowdown the speed of spreading the wildfire. Wider and longer pathway is better that depends on the available cutting methods on the fire site. Additionally, firefighter aircraft can spread fire retardant or water on this area (horizontal trees) to slow down the speed and scale of the fire dramatically.
At the end, even one fallen tree instead of vertical one does have impact to reduce the speed of spreading of fier. It is not necessary to remove the horizontal wood log from the site because of the time constrain.
