I was a pen & ink artist for years. I went door to door for house portraits with my portfolio and business card. I began doing large scale pen & inks of barns and derelict buildings with a Kohinoor tech pen on a roll of Permagenata parchment (doesn't come in rolls anymore, if anyone knows where I can find it let me know), but I would file a bevel edge around the barrel at the tip with crocus clothe, so the ink would penetrate the paper, rather than leave a glossy blob. Like a drypoint etching. Learned this from an artist named David Schofield,. and his pen and inks of NYC

Protip: You can clean these pens using a $20-30 ultrasonic cleaner and they work like new. Mechanics use ultra-sonic cleaners to clean heavy coats of oil from machine parts. It may take 3-4 passes in the machine to get the pistons working, but once they move again, they work like new! I've done this with cheap bunches of used Koh-I-Noor and Staedtler Marsmatic pens from Ebay.

I am in the same boat as you when it comes to studio design classes for architecture, it’s my favorite part to spend time there and actually be able to get out of my house. Now there's only 3 kids in the class and I already took off 4 years and I was doing so well and so excited to return and the first year went so well, I got my associates degree, dean's list etc., but as soon as covid/started my bachelors my grades went down and I haven't been the same happy, proud person I was when I started. You are so blessed to have this to fall back on, I’m so scared of continuing to fail and be a drop out again and go back to where I was 4 years ago. I feel as though all of my growth has been erased, it took so much courage to finally tell myself I can do something for the rest of my life. I don't feel like myself anymore, I don't want to let my parents down, I can’t keep waiting to go back to school they need to get a break from me and this was my chance to show them I can do it. All in all I just can’t decide if it’s the right thing to do or what to do rather. Nothing is aligning and I feel as though I am not the only one this has happened to, but that doesn't make me feel better knowing I’m not alone it almost makes me feel even more helpless. The biggest issue while at school is that I’m paying for an apartment to attend the studio classes, so I can bounce ideas off of the professor while the other 2 kids just commute to the school (I live 2 hours away), but all the other classes are online! I am draining my reserves for one class and I live alone in this apartment and only see people one day a week, while every other day I stay inside and lay in my bed and continue to be bogged down by the lack of commitment I can prescribe to my online classes (do no work/"do it later" later comes... still not done... get more sad... do less work... stress increases... suicide conjures... will to live depleting... nothing is happening... nothing can change...) Sincerely, Sterling :/

Nice digs Peter! These pens used to be the standard of drafting, called Rapidographs. Got about 20 of 'em, they come in lots of sizes. The nib is hollow with a thin metal wire inside that is attached to the metal weight you like to jiggle. That's the self cleaning method. The jewel at the tip ensures no scratching up the paper. When you shake it the wire unfouls the gunk that builds up inside the nib. It is necessary when using india ink, which is thicker and very dark (it comes in lots of colors, but if you want black-black, that's it). Never use India ink in a fountain pen, or you'll never get it out. Faber Castel also provides great cleaning solutions. I used Rapidographs in drafting for several years, until AUTOCAD replaced all that. Since Rapidographs can handle thicker inks, you can also use them on a variety of shimmer and metalic inks that don't play well, even with dip pens.

Omg the state of your poor Rotring! 😱🥺 Having flashbacks to being studio junior in the 80s where it was my weekly job to clean *everyone’s* Rotring pens. Dismantling each one into its constituent parts (except the 0.1mm because it’s finer than a hair and would bend and be forever ruined. Don’t ask how I found that out.). Then flushing through with water, then Rotring cleaner, then water (there were many rinses and repeatings), then drying, refilling, reassembling. Each person’s set had to be kept separate. The pens were in use almost continuously so every art worker used a rapidomat stand with a sponge at its base that the uncapped pens stood in with the tip resting on the sponge which had to be kept damp to be effective (to prevent ink drying). Had to clean and refill all those too. There were 5 of us on the boards, each with a minimum of 5 pens. The Faber Castells were around but it was like being a PC or a Mac user, each group swore by their brand, but as far as I could work out, it was mostly a matter of which you had been introduced to first. Please clean your pen(s)! The process is quite zen when you get into it. And you’ll be rewarded with years of reliable inking.🙏🏼😘

I will say this one thing to you Peter. The one thing that many people fail to learn is that self worth comes down to your personality but personality evolves as we grow, to grow we must dwell outside our comfort and seek our new self in the process. Hope this helps you set your mind on relaxing and feeling productive, being unproductive leads to better production and more sustainability in the long run.

Peter my favorite thing you do it tell us about your life. Been watching for a long time and been a long time sub on twitch. My after work routine wouldn’t be the same without you and your talks
