Tommy was an influential drummer and because of him lots of drummers cooled off, pulled it in and tightened up-he was the Ringo or Charlie Watts of the 70s. I dug those simple white Rogers kits he played; first a Swiv-O- Matic and then the Big R kit with the big drums. When Marky took over I think he at first played that same Big R kit.

All their drummers were really good. Richie is good too. Lucky band to have every drummer have such a unique and musical/pleasant feel on the kit.

Joey was the original drummer. Tommy played guitar in a band with Johnny before the Ramones. He was not a trained drummer and only took the position because Joey couldn't sing and play drums at the same time. He also had that style of minimal fast playing in mind when he started playing the drums for The Ramones. He also produced their albums and stopped playing drums to stay on as producer.

In my opinion the ramones went to another era when Tommy stopped being the drummer and I think they changed their sound quite a bit and sped up the songs live. I think the pure ramones sound par excellence is with Tommy. R.I.P cool guy ...

Agree 100%. There’s just a very subtle reserve (?) in his playing - possibly connected with not being a “real” drummer (ha! as if) - that meshed so well with Johnny & DeeDee to create that slightly “lurching” quality we all love so much. Anyone who thinks I’m full of it can check kzitem.info/news/bejne/1Kmb1migmquQf5w - especially note 0:29 when all three come in together. OH YEAH. Tommy slams!

@@SirMikeyD Totally agree, for those details Tommy will always be my favorite Ramone, although many people say that Marky or Richie are better, in my opinion Tommy is the most suitable for the Ramones, he knew how to keep the correct tempo and did not speed up the songs excessively.
