THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!!! As a father of 2 high functioning autistic boys I felt this. You are absolutely right their brains are wired differently. Both of my boys took to science, electronics, alternative energy, and robotics. We struggle to keep up at times as parents but we don't try to slow them down. I'm brought to tears watching this because you nailed it on the head. As a dad it's been the singe hardest thing to rewire my own thought process to accept and encourage them in the way best suited for them. It may take extra time to complete a project but as I've had to constantly remind myself, these are their moldable years and we won't get them back. Take the extra time. Thanks again Andy for this one. Best wishes to you and your family.

Andy, I know exactly what you're going through. I have 20 and 18 year old boys that have autism. The 20Yo is non verbal but just got into a job that he absolutely loves. The 18 year old is very emotional with everything and had those same days where something would start a rock slide in the day and he would breakdown. He hated going to middle school but loves anything else about school. I finally had to take over everything from medical appointments, to the IEP'S. I 1 year had the head of Special education so scared of the fact that i knew Wisconsin state law backwards and forwards and every time we had a meeting he would start to cry. Not enough parents know their rights under state and federal laws and just let the school system control everything. Please know that we 'tism dads all stick together and we really do need more to step up and talk about it. If you need anything, I'll do my best to try and help.

My son got cooking-tism, and just got promoted to lead chef at his job. I knew at six months he had Aspergers, but the army wouldn't give that diagnoses until he was 9 yo. I ended up homeschooling for awhile because he "was a disturbance" in the classroom. He had to pace, could not sit still. Got him into a traditional school for 6th and 7th grade. Then my husband died in Iraq, the boys and I had to leave Alaska, and ended up in NC. I found a wonderful private school where all the kids had ADD or Aspergers. Classroom sizes were no more than six kids, and I paid for it with the SGLI and Death Gratuity from the army. He graduated and got an Associates degree in Culinary Arts. He now works in a retirement community where they have a set schedule for meals so he doesn't have to worry about last minute changes. It took a LOT of work. We did a lot of role playing and practicing how to react to certain circumstances. We scoped out places he had to go to before hand. We developed signals so I could let him know when he was overpowering the conversation with cooking talk. Most of his pacing has disappeared except when he's really excited. His main "difference" is his social skills - he's 29 years old and they still suck.

I'm a 47 year old married father of 2, with a fair touch of the 'tism myself. My daughter likely has it also. I'm what they used to classify as Asperger's syndrome, now very high functioning autistic. My things are guns and fixing things. As long as I can wrap my head around how it works, I can usually assemble parts or repair whatever. My dad had a "bag-o'-gun" in his closet, his roommate had disassembled it for some reason. I put it together in 2 & 1/2 hours with some old, vague drawings in a cheap book I found in a bargain bin. I was 14. I just understand how most things work, so when they're broke, I fix them.

My teenage son was diagnosed at a very early age with ASD. There are so many things you learn and you never stop learning. I do have a suggestion if you and your wife need a break from the teaching end of it. I don't know exactly where you live at but seek out a college with the teaching program, and find out if they have students that would be willing to tutor your son in various subjects with the students being able to get extra college credit for teaching your son. Who knows, within a couple years he may be interested in taking some college courses. And he doesn't even have to graduate from school to do that in some areas.

Went through the same thing... loved school and the teachers did nothing with the bullies, and when I struck out against it I was the one in trouble, and another time thought of the 'Bully gets rocked by big kid!' video though the bullies ranged in sized and some at the school wanted to expel me, yet I still have the lasting indentations on my shins from them. Not growing up with money hurts... and when I was given a new maths book from my old teacher I was over the moon, completed it before going to school and the teacher said I was lying and it was already filled out second hand, told him to right any equation on the board and I would answer it, took a few minutes of him writing it down while others were watching and when his pen stopped I told him the answer and he got so mad and went and got the Principal, Principal came and tried to deescalate the situation and he asked the teacher was the answer right and he didn't even know they were just putting shit on the board, even another maths teacher came over to see what the fuss was. 30 or so minutes later came over to say I was wrong and I said where were working out, they forgot to carry a 1 or something stupid that others Loughed. From that year I had a free segment any time that class came up, still got the top score with a 0 attendance and others from the class came to me to assist them with questions.

First time that I've seen your channel. A lot of respect! Much of what you said also applies to those of us grandfathers who are actively involved in our Gkidz's lives. I have a Gson who is six but was born several months early and has had a whole list of health and behavioral issues - including cardiac arrest, a pace maker and multiple eye and heart surgeries.. They (health professionals) and we are still trying to figure him out. It's going to be a long, hard process and my heart hurts for him. I babysit him a few days per week and it is hard, VERY hard. One of the worst things is, I'm the dad that fixed everything for both my son and my daughter. I cannot fix this and it hurts so badly. I watched him all day today and he alternated between being the sweetest boy on the planet and beating me to the point that he broke my glasses. THe whole family is affected. Your perspective is comforting. THanks.

While I've never been officially diagnosed, I'm likely on the "spectrum." I get easily get overwhelmed by noise or commotion. But being older than you, it wasn't really easily diagnosed in the 80s. And probably wasn't understood. Even now it probably isn't. There is such a vast array of possible diagnoses - which is why it's called a spectrum. The guy over on Dave's Garage KZitem channel wrote a book about living with autism. He was a microsoft software engineer for many years. Good channel.

Is it an American thing to still say autistic? Here in Canada, we say Autism Spectrum Disorder. So, "on the spectrum" would be shorthand. It's tough, but at least it's not like the old days when they would just get bullied into masking.

I hear you. My grandson was "on the spectrum." We kept him in regular school until his freshman year in high school. Then, my daughter in law searched and found a school in which he excelled. It was private. It was mostly one on one. He began to play guitar and the school formed a "band" with him and 5 teachers. He liked hard rock. The band concert was a hard rock concert. He conspired with a friend who had a hard rock band and composed, performed in, then produced a song that is on spotify. When he was in our regular school district, they said that it would be a surprise if he graduated. He graduated from this school with a regents diploma! He was an artist. His work was accepted in juried competitions. He was a talented baker. He was going to attend culinary school. Sadly, a month after he graduated, he was diagnosed with a rapid growing brain tumor. Despite several surgeries, he died 4 and 1/2 months after it was discovered. I guess I'm telling you this because my daughter in law found a place for him. Despite the misery of being misdiagnosed by the school district and having all those miserable years in school, he finally was happy. He learned. He grew. He blossomed. Don't ever give up on your son. Rejoice that you are seeing him learning and happy.

As a (99% sure, but undiagnosed) adult autistic, I picked up the animal tism. I have to save them all, and probably hug them. I wish the evaluations had been more common when I was growing up. The ADHD and masking covered it for me very well. So well I'm now 40 and still struggle to do "normal people things" that just come natural. You made a good choice. Public schools are not the place for that kind of thing.

I used to go to church with a kid who is autistic. One time, I asked him what day of the week I was born. I gave him my birth date. At the time, I was probably 40. It took him probably 15-20 seconds, and he said, "I believe it was a Tuesday." A girl his age who was Googling the answer a few seconds later said," he's right." Never underestimate someone who has a "mental handicap." Their brain works differently, but usually excel highly in certain areas.

My son did that early on and it has definitely boosted his confidence and he plays with other kids when there (sometimes). 80 percent of those kids to be politically incorrect have something wrong with them. Be it Autism, or something else. I had to teach archery to kids that are hard of hearing, and another with ceryable Paulsi. Gotta warn you though if you get involved you might have more fun than he does.

Also, I love war history also and plan on watching movies and docs with my daughter. My wife thinks they’re boring 😢

Luke sounds like he is super smart and I would involve him in every single teaching moment (as long as it’s safe) that you can!!! He will be more knowledgeable and wise than anyone else around. You can teach him everything you know about everything and he’ll do lots of great things!!! Continue to be super proud of him like you and your wife are!!! He will eventually come across something he will love more than anything else and he will be the best person around that can do what he does! Glad you are doing what is right for him!!! May God continue to bless you and your whole family every single day!!! 💙🙏🏻💙🙏🏻💙
