I wrote A Dance of Birds primarily outside, during the spring of 2023. The piece had initially started as just an exploration into the woodwind family, but I quickly decided to take inspiration from the environment around me. I combined the musical style of dances such as waltz, with rapid moving lines to produce a piece inspired by the calm and lively aspects of the natural world. The title comes from the idea of a flock of birds waking up to perform a dance to the sounds and rhythm of nature, working at times both independent and in harmony.
This recording was made as part of a final project for recording techniques class, and features the wonderful playing of TU Alumni who previously performed the piece in the March 2024 PRISM Concert.
