I’ve owned a ton of them over the years, they really aren’t dangerous at all, they can be a. It heavy but I honestly perfer it! Only thing “dangerous” about them I would say is if you drop them you might break the internal mechanics causing it to no longer work :(

A little info (From someone who has two) on this "Dangerous" mechanical pencil. The coloured rubber represent different led thicknesses e.g. the brown one is 0.3mm and the grey is 0.5mm. It has a very low centre of gravity which makes it feel very stable and surprisingly pleasant to spin in your hand if you are like me and like to fidget. The best way to use it is with a relaxed grip and a somewhat loose wrist I found the momentum does most of the work you just have to change it's direction. Someone like me who has problems with my hand I find being able to rely more on the pencil to do the downward work a real bonus. You can't change the led by turning the grip it's just there so when you change the led from say HB to 2B etc. You can turn the grip to the 2B sign so you know when you pick it up that it has 2B led in it. As for it breaking I can't say much as mine have been pretty good but like anything now days if you treat it rough don't expect it to last. Oh and yes it still has that rubber that will only last for about three letters before needing replaced.

This is a great for the desk. I’ve used 2 of these as a woodworker, I loved both of them up until they both snapped in half right in the middle where the plastic part meets the 2 aluminum tubes. If they made that part that holds to pencil together stronger, this would be the best mechanical pencil ever.

The only "dangerous" thing about this pencil that you didn't mention is that the plastic tub inside that holds the nib out when it's extended has a tendency to break if the pencil is dropped, and it gets weaker with time.

Sounds like the old Kohinoors. They would snap where the brittle plastic barrel threaded into the knurled aluminum grip. This was decades ago, so maybe they have improved. I remember one breaking on me as I started a test. The eraser was so finicky, it was nearly useless, often shearing off when you tried to use it. It didn’t feed reliably, especially the 0.3mm. And the aluminum grip would slowly abrade your skin. Loved them otherwise, though.

I have an entire set and I love them. The extra weight gives them more substance when writing and they grip amazingly even if you have sweaty hands and fingers. The only thing dangerous about them is the retraction spring which is reasonably strong to give a sharp and consistent retraction of the nib. If you take the thing apart, that spring can send the two halves flying.

As someone who has used the 0.3mm variant of this pencil for a bit over a year, i can say it is perfectly safe and is actually pretty nice to use. The graphgear 500 is more comfortable if the balance of the pencil or how heavy it is happens to be your concern though.

It may look nice because of its metal outside, but after a few weeks with it, the glue under the metal joining the plastic together let go and the entire thing fell apart, if you sum up the price of a few pencils broken, you should be able to get a full metal one.

I prefer the Graphlet, in .03. Less complicated, a bit lighter, still pretty substantial, but overall more durable especially on the jobsite where I use it both for writing and drawing diagrams, and for marking pipes for cutting, and marking drill holes. I like the Graphgear but it's too heavy and has too many moving parts to break.
