In April, five members of Rotary International joined our Fair Future and Kawan Baik teams to assess the effectiveness of our Water Connections, Zero Malaria, and Primary Medical Care programs in East Sumba.
On April 18th, we visited a village called Lapinu. It's located far from civilization, and the people there are living in poverty. They lack access to basic amenities such as clean water, electricity, and proper sanitation facilities that are readily available elsewhere. Getting there is a challenge as it requires a special car capable of navigating rough roads for over two hours.
The children of Lapinu greeted us with singing and dancing when we arrived. They used a speaker powered by a car battery charged by the village's only solar panel. During the visit, a brave girl spoke kindly to us in English, which deeply moved our Rotarian friends.
We chatted with the villagers, and Ayu, Ino from Kawan Baik, Alex from Fair Future, and John from Rotary shared the good things that were happening. They said our medical care helps fight diseases like malaria, which have existed for a long time. Even though there are now two health workers in Lapinu making a difference, we must continue to work hard to achieve this goal.
John from Rotary showed that he genuinely cared about the families of Lapinu. He said Rotary would work with Fair Future and its team to improve the situation for everyone, especially children and people who need help. They want to find sustainable ways to improve people's lives in the village.
When we visited Lapinu with our Rotarian friends, it greatly impacted us. We saw that life there is tough because they do not have access to good food, medical care, or clean water. It made us realize how important it is to help them and why we must act quickly!
Our trip to Lapinu reminded us that we must continue to work hard to improve life and help the people there. We genuinely want our actions to make a difference for this vital community.
