Stamford, Lincolnshire, was voted ‘Britain’s top place to live’ in 2013 by the Sunday Times and has some of the best Georgian architecture in the UK. A walk in Stamford is a real step back into history. Proclaimed by Sir Walter Scott as “the finest stone town in England”, it was declared a conservation area in 1967 and has over 600 listed limestone buildings and five medieval churches. You also see the lowland River Welland flow through the town.
The town has 17th and 18th-century stone buildings, older timber-framed buildings and five medieval parish churches. Stamford is a frequent filming location. As you leave Stamford you can't miss Burghley House, an Elizabethan mansion, built by the First Minister of Elizabeth I, Sir William Cecil, later Lord Burghley. It is the ancestral seat of the Marquess of Exeter. The tomb of William Cecil is in St Martin's Church, Stamford. The parkland of the Burghley Estate adjoins the town on two sides.
