Watching this video again because I heard one of the songs from it randomly on Spotify on the drive home earlier and it's wild how much more sense everything in this video makes when one is multiple years out of Hack Reactor. 6:16 Me in 2019: "Whoa wonder what that nifty looking diagram is about" Me in 2023: "Oh, he's diagramming prop drilling, which I mostly try to avoid." 6:48 thankfully I've only had to do this once in 3 years and of course it was Webpack-related. I wonder if his problem was Webpack-related. 6:55 yeah from what I can make out that kind looks like a Webpack config... whatever he had to make his own Stack Overflow question about, I'd bet it was MFing Webpack or something closely related to Webpack.

for those wondering here is a comparison of hack reactor vs my university, to help you decide what to do: HACK REACTOR: -one week of cs fundamentals -four weeks of intensive javascript projects -one week solo project -five weeks of application design and development UNIVERSITY (ie classes i have to take, not in order): -Calculus 1 -Calculus 2 -Discrete Mathematics -Linear Algebra -Calculus based physics 1 -Intro to problem solving and algorithm design (C programming) -intro to programming (Java programming) -intermediate programming (Java programming) -Computer Systems and Architecture (CPU design, assembly language, etc) -Secure web applications and vulnerabilities (PHP, SQL, Python) -Data Structures (C++, math) -Compiler theory and design (Building Compilers from scratch) -Organization of programming languages -Object Oriented and Concurrent Programming -Operating Systems (C, Assembly) -Design and analysis of computer algorithms (math) -Machine learning (Python, opencv, tensorflow, and lots of math) -Current Trends and topics in computer science (Thesis class, massive project) Hack reactor is a very very very good place to go if you want to become a super good web developer very fast. It is a lot more practical, applied knowledge for a specific task. Whereas a degree in computer science is super math-based and largely theoretical. If you go to hack reactor, you'll be missing out on a lot of fundamental scientific knowledge that makes you a better engineer, but is largely useless in the real world. you'll become a very good web developer,. If you go to college, you'll learn data structures and algorithms to the core, but you are not really going to be learning web development. If you want to be a web developer, go to hack reactor, college wont really teach you that. If you want to do hard-core systems level engineering, go to college.

That's really interesting Nobel. A few folks were right out of college but I haven't seen someone who was that young. Most people use the bootcamp to transition. If you're able to get a CS degree from a university I'd opt for that. Otherwise I think bootcamp at your age is still incredible. Don't think it's weird. Admirable if anything. When your counterparts graduating university are looking for jobs you might be a senior engineer, or tech lead. Skills speak louder than age in this industry. I'd say do it if you really want to!

I've seen people from all walks of life become successful in this program, irrespective of college major/diploma. If you're resilient, good at taking feedback (from all your bugs), and patient, you can succeed. Hey Alan, great video! I'm interested in signing up for Hack Reactor in LA, but how was the technical interview before getting it? I read that Hack Reactor has a 3% acceptance rate which is kinda yikes. How was your school life balance during the 12 weeks?
@alan_zhao
4 жыл бұрын
The technical interview required you to know the fundamentals of programming: loops, if/then, classes, functions, writing tests, etc. But don't worry if you don't pass the first time. You'll get feedback and if you continue improving I think you have a good shot of eventually getting in. So don't be discouraged by the 3% acceptance rate! There really isn't really school/life balance during the 12 weeks. There's a 1 week break in between to come up for air, but the rest of the time really is focused on immersing yourself in software engineering :).

@alan_zhao

Haera Lee Well, it depends on what you’re used to I guess. If you’re used to working long hours and if you find debugging enjoyable then the schedule is manageable. Below is the list of topics we covered in the first 6 weeks of the program. This will likely change as the curriculum evolves to keep up with the times and market demands however. Javascript Fundamentals (Re-Creating Basic Utility Libraries) Git/Git Workflow Data Structures and Complexity Analysis Algorithms APIs Inheritance Patterns (Classes/Subclasses) Data Modeling Front End Frameworks (React) State Management (Redux) Servers Databases Security/Authentication Callbacks/Promises/ES6 Syntax Each topic was covered in around 2 days, and was a combination of hands on sprints and formal lectures. The second half of the curriculum is where you build full stack applications using the latest technologies and system design principles.

@alan_zhao
5 жыл бұрын
I thought it was among the best educational experiences I’ve had. Technology is constantly evolving and Hack Reactor and other boot camps’ curriculums reflect that. The lectures were clear, uncluttered, and easy to understand, which meant we could cover core material quickly. The system design capstone (how to design and scale applications) our cohort had to do for the second half of the program didn’t exist 3 months before I joined. Whereas prior cohorts learned backbone for their front end framework, we learned react. They stay current and have a good pulse on the market. Sure, I didn’t learn everything. There’s too much out there. But in 3 months I now have a toe hold to teach myself the rest. Plus the people I met during and after the program were driven, supportive to each other, and from all walks of life. I have received valuable help and advice from successful alumni who graduated years before me. And I’m sure I’ll continue to see the benefits of the alumni network for years to come.
