Being a student nurse in the UK is sooooo different to the US. We are so much more strict here it makes me a little jealous haha! We are not allowed any nail varnish, no jewellery only a fob watch, hair tied back off the shoulders, no clothing below the elbow (even in winter), uniforms are not to be worn outside the hospital under any circumstances, we are not allowed to wear scrubs until we qualify we have separate student uniforms :(. We do placements of 5/8 weeks at hospitals doing 3 x 13hr shifts a week, it's exhausting!!
@Sarah777Barah
6 жыл бұрын
Trust me, it's not like that for all schools in the US. I was super surprised at how NOT strict her school is. Everything you said you can't do is the same for me with the exception of the clothing below the elbow. I am allowed to wear a scrub jacket or a long sleeved shirt underneath the uniform. Also, her day seemed pretty chill compared to my clinical days and I definitely don't spend all that time with makeup. We are told to wear minimal or no makeup (bacteria sticks to makeup! )

GO for it!!!! Its a lot of work and you will cry laugh and all the other ranges of emotions, lack of sleep will become the norm but it is worth it. the feeling you get the first time you put a smile on a patients face is beyond amazing and it just gets better the more you learn and are able to activly participate in the care of the patient. and for warning even in your last year (im in my last year) you still feel like you dont know enough, but that's okay its normal you cant know everything, learn everything you can learn as much as possible ask questions and in clinical get as much skills practice as you can in the labs and in clinical and if your school has sim(simulations) DO THEM!! they really do help prepare you. Make friends and stick together because most of the people who arent in nursing wont understand the intensity of what you are going through. and a good support system is beyond important espetially after a bad clinical day or just when you need people to relate too. i wish you the best hope you go for it and get in to join this whole new world. :D

This is so interesting to watch. I'm a student nurse in the UK and it's crazy how different things are. Just a few questions regarding jewellry, nails and long sleeves. Do you were these when in practise? It looks so much more glamorous than us 😂
@purplecosmos5431
6 жыл бұрын
Not a nurse but going to be a nursing student in the Midwest US :) I don't know about in practice but the rule book for my school states no nail polish, no big jewelry, no hair down. Long sleeves are allowed in specific colors and kinds...white and grey, I think. So I guess every school makes its own rules :) I have a question for you- I know that university is easier to attend in the UK than here, but don't you get paid less in the end? A new nurse here would earn 40-70k dollars a year...just curious?
@bethany3172
6 жыл бұрын
purple cosmos hey thanks for replying and easier in the sense that we can get a student loan to pay off university fees so we get £9250 per year to pay the uni and then depending on income of your parents you get another loan so mines quite high at £8000. It has to be payed back with interest though so it's not great in that sense. With regards to pay yeah it's absolutely shocking in the UK newly qualified nurses earn around £23000 a year so if I'm correct is around $30700. That's why the UK is so short of nurses because we aren't looked after very well unfortunately. I suppose our saving Grace is the NHS x
@purplecosmos5431
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks...paying for school over here is painful too :) The four year schools I looked at were charging around 80-90,000 dollars for a bachelors, which would take at least seven years on a new grad's pay scrimping and pinching to pay back not counting in outrageous interest...stuff needs to get fixed, doesn't it :) Really, nurses are the gatekeepers of life and deserve something a bit better!
