Follow Ashley Junger as she recounts her experience studying mammal responses to reforestation efforts in Brazil's vibrant Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu. This summer, Ashley traveled to the spectacularly mountainous Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA) to participate in the Earthwatch expedition Wildlife and Reforestation in Brazil. She surveyed small mammals in an old-growth forest with Dr. Manoel Muanis and other Earthwatch volunteers. This survey is the first step toward monitoring how mammal populations respond to reforestation throughout the reserve. Check out what it's like to trek the forest as a volunteer on this research expedition!

About Earthwatch
Earthwatch is a nonprofit that connects people with scientists to protect the planet. Since 1971, we've mobilized over 200,000 volunteers to take action on critical environmental challenges. By engaging students, teachers, corporations, communities, and the public, we are expanding the reach of environmental science, research, and conservation far beyond academic circles.
Earthwatch has played a critical role in creating policy plans, protected areas, national parks, and refuges. Our research expeditions have yielded numerous successes, from supporting the designation of Sandy Point in the U.S. Virgin Islands as a national wildlife refuge to informing Belize's decision to establish the world's first national ray sanctuary.
