This feels a bit like DevDuck's style, the guy who's making Dauphin. I think most people who change their style become less interesting, but you've actually nailed it here, not spending too much time on the B-roll, and giving us plenty of interesting game-play footage, ideas, development and problem-solving, so we never feel like you're wasting our time with the cutaways. Good stuff, and consistently interesting.

I can definitely see that, for what it's worth I love DevDuck's content and he's one of the channels I consistently look forward to watching, so I shouldn't be surprised to see my content heading that way. Anyways I hope it's still it's own unique thing, and glad to hear your feedback!

@@kylebanks Good artists copy. Great artists steal. The trick is that you are Kyle Banks, and Dev Duck is Dev Duck. No matter how much you copy him, you'd always end up with your own unique twist, because you are you. Your game, vocal delivery and life are all different, so it's still a different experience. I say keep it up, and don't be afraid to experiment here and there. You have a solid foundational style-even this video doesn't feel completely decoupled from your normal style-and the framework is ripe for development as this whole dev log style of video is still, in my opinion, somewhat in its nascence. You're a pioneer, in a way. Keep charting new courses. :)

Several things: 1. I really like the devlog format. I get to see your plants and your puppy 😍 2. *Sick* tat sleeves 👌 3. The whistling mechanic is great! My only really picky critique is that I think the pitch is too low (higher pitch travels farther).

If the character does a lot of herding, it seems to me that they probably wouldn't use their fingers. They'd learn to whistle with their teeth and tongue. Or use a shepherds whistle. The fingers animation looks good, but perhaps it would look more real if the character pointed instead? Perhaps with a slight head tilt to indicate the whistle? Really enjoying your Dev log.
@kylebanks
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I agree about the teeth/tongue whistle, that would have been my preference, but the uncolored world doesn't allow enough detail for facial animation to be picked up by the player. The shepherds whistle would work, but it would also indicate intent or that the girl was expecting to be herding sheep on this journey, which isn't the case with the story. I'm not sure I've ever seen a shepherd use visuals to guide their dog, it's always audible as they can hear at far greater distances than they can see, and you need to be able to guide the dog with more precision than pointing from hundreds of yards away would allow.
@big_badaboom
2 жыл бұрын
@@kylebanks Thanks for the reply. Fair point. I don't have a good sense of the game story yet. And re pointing, I just meant it would be natural for a real person to gesture at the dog if they were trying to get it to change direction. If your character did that also, it would look cool. I misspoke when I said "pointed instead". I meant "pointed also".

Thanks so much! Hmmm, I don't really know what kind of advice to give other than you just have to force yourself to keep working at it. Making a game is a long, slow, and often very boring process, but if you keep at it day after day then over time the progress really adds up. Making devlogs/social media posts is one way to track your progress over time, and that can help keep motivation up.

i have a idea for the game u should do something like a timer or so , so that with time if are not able to restore color for like 10 minutes or something then u will freeze with the rest of the animals that way it will create some tension to go to the next chechk point or something like main idea is that just to be colored every 10 or so minutes to prevent freezing and by the end of 9 minutes ur character will slow down
@kylebanks
2 жыл бұрын
That could definitely work, but I don't think it would necessarily fit with the more casual/atmospheric vibe I'm going for with this game. I could experiment with it in a particular area/island though, rather than the whole game

Just a thought, would it not be visually clearer if she roughly made the ISL sign for the direction while she is whistling, instead of the same animation for all direction and relying on only the sound to differentiate? ^^
@kylebanks
2 жыл бұрын
Thats a really clever idea, something I hadn't considered. Most of the time you won't be close enough to make out the sign though, and it wouldn't make sense for a dog to be reading the sign when it can hear much better and further than it can see. The good news is this isn't strictly necessary for gameplay, it's really only for a bit of immersion as the objectives are highlighted in other ways
