A look inside the sheep barn and discover there has been a few lambs born over night. Miller helps us identify which lambs belong to which ewe.
We match them up and create a small family pen. We have 7 ewes that lambed the day before and have been inside a lambing pen bonding with their lambs. We push them out and relocate them to the family pen to make room for new ewes and their lambs.
We paint the lamb and ewe with livestock paint so we can easily identify them in the group. Each ewe and lamb is given a number. Miller helps with chores throughout the week.
We spray iodine on each newborn lamb to prevent infection. This is done within the first 24 hours of birth.
We have had 7 ewes lamb out resulting in 4 single lambs and 4 sets of twins. This morning we have 3 more ewes lamb having 2 additional single lambs and another ewe having had a set of triplets. Totalling 10 ewes and 17 lambs born to date.
Triplets are great when born but we tend to have to pull one of the triplets from the ewe and feed it milk because often times the one triplet is too tiny to survive with the family.
