An often missed part of the Cathedral is the memorial to the Miners that lost their lives in the pit/ coal mine in Co Durham. Many disasters , Trimdon Grange and Easington Colliery amongst the most tragic .

I remember seeing Durham on the train as well and wondering what it would be like to visit, and now I know. On another note, I just found out that if I get an Australian National Trust membership, I can use it in the UK so that will come in handy for the next trip! Excellent video as always Kat :0)

We live between Durham & Sunderland and love our walks along the river at Durham. There are so many different routes to take and so many lovely picnic spots. It's a gem of a city. Lebaneat is one of our favourite restaurants (great takeaways delivered from there too) and the Manakeet Cafe opposite the Riverview Cafe you tried is our new 'go to' cafe in Durham. They have loads of vegan options and their food makes for an excellent lunch stop 😊

Great look around the city! Make sure to come back for the Durham Miners Gala, it's an annual event held every July that celebrates the history of mining heritage from the region. The streets are jam-packed, and dozens of processions of drummers and big brass brands play all the way from the market square down to the racecourse.

Things you need to do next time: river walk around the peninsula and along to Maiden Castle (climb the hill too if you wish), Palace Green Library and Archaeology Museum, Vennels Cafe (my favourite), Botanical Gardens, The Story which now houses the Durham Light Infantry collections and Zen (my favourite restaurant) near the courts and prison. By the way, Hotel Indigo was the old Shire Hall before being taken over by the university. Also consider taking a walk through High Wood behind the main university campus, covered in bluebells in May. If you want to go further afield, I recommend Bishop Auckland (Castle, Grounds, Walled Garden, Faith Museum, Mining Art Museum, Spanish Museum, reachable by changing trains at Darlington) and Barnard Castle (Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, River Tees walks, Raby Castle and High Force if you have your own transport).

I think I'm desensitised to the magnificence of Durham as I live locally, but great video highlighting the city in a positive light. A lot of people who are my age and younger only see Durham as a party place, and not for the history and the origin of the city. Durham is one of those places when I was younger with friends what would be a treat to go to, but now it's more of a destination to go to other places in the country through the train station or the bus station. The older I get I actually take in the Cathedral a lot more than I used to and explore the city. Fun story, back when Pokemon Go was in its hayday it was one of the most fun and entertaining days I've ever had as the city was buzzing with excitement for the first rare Pokemon to hit the map. And another funny story while I'm at it, me and some friends left college early to sit on the cathedral grounds when The Avengers was being filmed inside the grounds, I'm not a huge fan of Marvel but it was so cool knowing these A List celebrities were in my area. Great video anyway!

County Durham is unique, as for many centuries it was a virtually independent state ruled not by the king, but by powerful `Prince Bishops', who were more or less the `Kings of County Durham'. Its why its known as the city Of Prince Bishops.

Why did you say durham is in between newcastle and york?? No its not, so get your facts right, its actually closer to SUNDERLAND as we're both on the river wear n just 11mls apart, newcastle is 21.5mls from durham and there's plenty to see n do in Sunderland which is also historic as it was founded in AD 674
