Many times I hike with friends, or alone, but sometimes I get the opportunity to hike with my family. They’re not as keen on hiking as I am, and not at all interested in backpacking.
However, one day during our visit to Mallorca, Spain, we spent the day hiking in the mountains of Mallorca.
We decided to hike to Castell d’Alaró which is a tiny part of the GR211, the 140 km route over Serra Tramuntana. This trail is also known as Ruta de Pedra en Sec which translates to the Drystone Route.
We started off in Palma de Mallorca from Estadio Intermodal where all trains depart from. It was about a 30-40 minute trip to Alaró/Consell. From there we took the bus tot the town of Alaró which is fairly close, but a little to far to walk (at least if you’re planning to hike for several hours afterwards). After arriving to Alaró you can start the hike towards Castell d’Alaró.
For us this was a fantastic adventure. The backpack consisted only of lots of water, snacks and a simple lunch. It took us around three hours to walk from the town of Alaró to the castle. It’s about a 600 meter elevation gain and once up there, the views are fantastic.
At the castle you also have the opportunity to buy sodas and coffee. Very much appreciated! Be sure to check opening hours before you hike up as it may be closed during certain periods.
Going down again was fairly easy and took us maybe an hour and a half.
Five hours in total, including lunch and time for the amazing views. Be sure on your route however as we took a wrong turn and ended up spending 45 minutes extra exploring the wilderness west of the actual trail. But that’s also rewarding of course!
