I always love playing historic brass instruments, but this one sure was a stretch for me. The ophicleide was one of many answers to the dilemma of the 'brass bass.' During the 1800s, as chromatic brass instruments were picking up steam in the form of keyed and valved instruments (as opposed to slide instruments like the historical sackbut, which led to the modern trombone), there became a question of what sort of sound and approach was desired now that the brass family would be capable of playing a wider and more filled-in range of pitches. One of these issues was the bass voice. Of course, there was the tuba, which some composers notoriously hated. There was the cimbasso, preferred by composers of the Italian school. Then there were more obscure bass-voice instruments with brass mouthpieces, such as the serpent or this: the ophicleide. These (particularly the former) are historical instruments tracing back further than the modern tuba, but saw some overlap nonetheless.
This instrument was one of two (maybe more) ophicleides belonging to the late Leonard Byrne, principal tubist of the Spokane Symphony for 48 years. It came through Clearwater Music for servicing in the summer of 2022, where my boss and I worked on shimming the keyholes, adjusting lever positions, and making sure this bizarre instrument could play to the best of its capabilities. In light of Leonard's recent passing earlier this week, I would like to dedicate content featuring this instrument to his memory and legacy as a figurehead of Spokane, WA's music scene.
