Lautrec was the single bridge between the impressionism/expressionism of Manet and the bold abstract expressions of Matisse. His statements of line, color, shape and realistic illustration are exquisitely executed and are as masterful as they are historically inventive. It's part of his story

In my view, Toulouse-Lautrec expressed who he was most faithfully through his posters. His minimalist sweeps of bright color over dark do as they are supposed to do; grab my attention and introduce me to the characters of the subject and the artist alike. The vision is magical. I think, Toulouse-Lautrec informed and inspired the unequaled caricatures of Hirschfeld. The works of both artists bring me joy. As does Mr Januszczak when imaginatively delivering his smart, vivid, writing through confident, assertive, elocution.

The famous photographer of the Women of Storyville(New Orleans Red Light district where prostitution was made legal from 1897-1917), Ernest Joseph Bellocq, was born into a well to do French Creole family here in the Quarter. He was described as a "hydrocephalic semi-dwarf" who spent much time in high class brothels and opium dens creating stunning photographs of the denizens of the demi-monde. I'd love to see a comparative treatment of the similarities between these two genius artists of the Belle Époque. Hint hint Waldemar...😊

An excellent study of HTL & his times...his physical problems & the depressing, tawdry, corrupt & dangerous areas where he lived & worked allowed his artistry to shine through as it did for many artists...Interesting that we did not see some of his work which was done using cartons that once held canned goods...he used these when he did not have a proper canvas...I have seen them, it is very affecting to see a masterpiece & glance over to the right & see a faint trace on the medium he used of where canned goods once rested...humbling...Good video!

Fascinating! But come on - John Huston’s “Moulin Rouge” was a much better film than the host’s dismissive remarks are meant to suggest. I always prefer a good documentary, but “Moulin Rouge” was a more than reasonable piece of work - with the occasional moment of great poignancy. And Jose Ferrer bore an astonishing physical resemblance to Lautrec.
@Fardawg
Жыл бұрын
His "critique" amounted to "how dare they try to accurately portray Toulouse-Lautrec's size!" Does he want him portrayed a 6ft tall? Jose Ferrer was great in that film, and remembering the film recently is the reason I looked for a documentary here in the first place.

When talking about Toulouse's red head- Wald says 'was the first of his Titian head Fielder nui' This is how the closed caption wrote it. It's incorrect, obviously, lmao. Can anybody translate. Listening to the French part it sounds like Fei da nui or peu or something. I'm not familiar with the phrase and the first part- no idea what the adjective is supposed to be. Anybody.
