As a Mechanical Engineer, I've been completely nerding out on your videos covering design theory, dimensioning and tolerancing, materials, testing, manufacturing, etc. Now you have one of the bright young designers of the pen world, on the cutting edge of materials and coatings. I hope that this will be the first of many such collaborative videos. Keep up the good work, both of you 👏.

Nice conversation, I appreciate Ben’s approach to pen making. Good design at a good price. As an engineer myself, I cringe when the word “innovation” gets thrown around with regard to fountain pens. Is a new material innovation? Yes, if it was developed for the FP(see lava resin), no if it was simply repurposed from other applications (see ultem). Many innovations might the kind we don’t see directly, manufacturing process improvements that bring cost down, quality up, or simply make something possible. I would love to see a video where you discuss these themes, you’d be great at it!

Looking forward to how the TiSiNX-coated pens will turn out! The curious me has two questions: What metal will these pens be made out of and - since it is an extremely hard coating - will the eggshell effect be an issue?
@Doodlebud
2 жыл бұрын
I don't think there will be any eggshell or cracking issues with the coating. It's a molecular bond & extremely strong. This same coating is used on endmills & other cutting tools in the machine shop. If it can handle cutting steel, titanium, etc... it can hold up to the rigorous demands of us fountain pen folks 😉
@CorneliusBartke
2 жыл бұрын
@@Doodlebud Well, I see I have some reading to do about superhard nanocomposites. I last looked at various coatings when I researched steel watch cases a few years ago (in the end I went with tegimented steel, no regrets). Granted, watches may be more prone to be dinged and dented than fountain pens so eggshell effect might be more of a problem in that use case. Regarding endmills: tungsten carbides are already quite hard so a coating would probably not be subjected to stresses fom elasticity or plasticity of the base material. I agree that tribological properties or extended tool life considerations of a coating will not be relevant for a fountain pen and judging from concept images on Ben’s insta the decorative aspect is exquisite. I am hoping it turns out to be the orange/blurple color scheme.
