My first sampler was a mirage back when the DSK came out, A friend of mine gave me a rack mirage a few years ago with a lot of factory disks, they're so great. The strings and Choirs are more like a lo fi mellotron. I'm pretty sure I read the Mirage string are all over The Cure Disintegration album.

This is great Paolo! Love that early 8-bit '84 era sound - Mirage was first 'affordable' keyboard sampler ... the poor man's Fairlight!! Sold well of course and set Ensoniq on their path. Still have my later Casio FZ10M rack being first 'affordable' 16-bit on market but still retained a quirky analogue VCF stage 😎. The guy I've just bought TS-10 from tells me that back in the day, he worked as the Ensoniq UK distributor and was directly involved in the Mirage launch; exciting times then right?! More of these vintage synth demos ... pleeeeze!!! 😎🎹👍🎶🍻

@@millionare5446 What he said has a genuinely good point though. If musicians today got as much out of gigabytes as was done with kilobytes back in the 1980s and megabytes in the 1990s, there might be something worth being impressed by. The same goes with getting the most from only four or eight recording tracks, or with sequencing etc. There are no hardships or challenges any more with the hardware, and so musicians are not being creative due to any restrictions imposed on them. Seriously I think musicians of today need to get their arse in gear, and catch up and overtake the technology once again.

i have owned three Mirages, a DSK1, DSK8 and a rackmount. and the best use i got out of them was sampling old films, films and news broadcasts. at the lowest sampling setting to get the longest sampling time, often playing the source at twice the speed to get even more sampling time. the magic happened to those samples, and a distinct artefacts that cannot be mistaken for anything else. nothing else can reproduce that effect too.

I still have my Mirage - bought it new in 1986 - and it still works (but the top 5 notes don't sound from the keyboard so it's in the shop). I played out with it for almost 20 years and can recognize its sounds instantly. It came with about 15 disks and I got a few more over the next few years (some of which you demonstrated here, including Ta/Doo/Male & Female voices, and Mondo hiss!) After it comes back from the shop I plan to start doing some sound collecting for it...It's been neglected in my cellar for far too long! I really appreciate your Mirage videos!
