This looks even better than some of the gaming mats bought from shop. I've been searching for a video like this for a while now

Awesome! Thanks for stopping by! I was also thinking about making a few instructional videos about the other kinds of mats that I have done. Super simple, super cheap, and (as you mention) the mats look pretty good on the table! Thanks for the visit! All the best!

Crazy easy! Even an untalented crafter like myself could pull it off and have look pretty decent! :) I am going to try a slightly different version on a smaller scale with slightly different materials for a skirmish game. I will be sure to post that video too and see what you think! All the best to you!

Do you use steam with the iron? Or just use it dry.
@GrayArmyGaming
2 жыл бұрын
Just dry. The steam might destroy the paint, so I just iron dry in order to melt together the paint layers and set them in place. Good luck!

Thanks so much, Wolfbother! Yes, with a little bit of time and patience one can get a pretty good end result. Altogether this cost no more than 8 USD (3 for the sheet, 3 for the paint, 2 for the sponge). Thanks for watching, friend!

Just what I was looking for! Curious on the durability of it though. I mean, does it stay flat after rolling ut out, and is it resistent at all to scratches from moving models over it? And how about creases, wringkles, folds etc? Like do you have to iron it flat every time you use it? Thanks :)

Hi Tomas! Thanks for your visit and for the questions! I have had these homemade mats for about 2 years now. I store them under my bed and bring them out whenever I need to play. When I store them I roll them around a long wooden pole (like what you would have in a closet) with each mat rolled around the others. This rolling method is perfect for storage and keeps the mats from creases, wrinkles, etc. I have never needed to iron them again! In addition, the amount of paint that I have used for the Snow Mat when ironed down after painting creates a nice smooth surface that does not crease or wrinkle. The models move great across the surface without any scratching. If you check out some of my "Battle for the Borderlands" videos on the channel you can see several of the mats at work (three of them, I believe). I have not prepped the mats in any way, just took them out and put them down on the table. You can also see how the models move. All in all, no issues with durability. They have never scratched and never tore. As such, I can highly recommend saving some money and making your own mats, especially the more generic-looking ones like snow/ice. All in all, I think I spent something like 3 dollars for the used sheet, and probably about 5 dollars on the paints--a pretty good bargain. Hope this answers your questions! All the best!

Absolutely! These homemade mats are SO much cheaper! Yes, they are not as detailed, but it is hard to argue with 5 dollars vs. 75 dollars! Good luck in your mat making! All the best!

Nice video, i still find gaming mats to be one of the most overpriced gaming essentials, and we don't all have the time space or dedication to build big gaming tables with 3D terrain. This is a great solution.
