My understanding is that it's a step up transformer added in series between the pulled out tone knob and the output jack. The original run had a resistor wired up in parallel that cut the bass from the pickup, so that may be a suitable alternative (or could be a good way to make the passive boost more suited to your taste)

Appreciate the candid review! It's very difficult to convey how a guitar really sounds, and what is considered pleasant or unpleasant. A close-mic'd recorded guitar+amp pretty much always sound different than what the amp sounds like to our ears in the room. And of course, your viewers are listening through who-knows-what kind of audio system, phone, etc. Would have been nice to hear a Strat or something as a reference into that Deluxe Reverb, with the mic in the same position, so we could more accurately determine how nasally the Yamaha really sounds like, because on my audio system, those 2- and 4-positions weren't that bad.

I have the same guitar. I glued a shim of wood in the bridge pickup cavity to raise it up. Thicker foam isn't enough because the screws provided aren't long enough and there isn't enough thread for the screws to be stable otherwise. You'll have a wobbly pickup. My pickups are both 3/64" from the strings to the poles. That seems high,. but that's actually Gibson's spec for P90 pickup height. They sound good there.

Hi, I have the same P90 Revstar Standard guitar (except mine is blue), and I adore the boost on, especially with treble pickup. Quite humbucker sound, great ! I changed the original pickups for boutique ones (was not necessary, but....) and I added springs that were missing. I checked the black painting conductivity and on mine, there is NO condictivity at all. So I removed the useless connections between pickups cavities and the volume potentiometer ground. 60 cycles hum remains exactly the same. I changed the tuners for locking Grovers. I essentially play blues, on a tube amp. And I love this guitar as much as my US Gibsons (LP Classic and SG Standard). Very easy to play, great sounds, great boost function for crunchy "humbuckerish" tones.

Thanks for this review. My guitar playing friends and myself don't like the tone of stainless steel frets when using distorted or overdriven amp settings...As the luthiers at Ronin Guitars put it, there is an un-equable "zing" in the upper frequencies with stainless steel frets. I prefer the tone of classic and time proven nickel silver frets.

If you're considering purchasing one of these guitars and can't decide if the professional version is worth the money. I've owned the Japanese (professional) version of the Revstar for about a year now and it's an incredible guitar. However the difference between it and the standard version isn't too big in my opinion. But take in to consideration that the quality between various standard Revstars can differ quite a bit. If you're able to play it first hand and really enjoy the feel, buy it. If you wanna be sure you're getting a great guitar (and have the means to afford it) get the Japanese professional version. I guess it also depends on how much you actually play whether or not it's worth it. It is called professional for a reason haha.

100% agree with you, i have the Japanese RSP02T in Gold and I absolutely love it, tried a couple of standards in the store but the professional just felt and sounded better to me. I haven’t touch my Gibson ES 335 and my Hotroded Strat since I got the Revstar, is just so perfect! I play Psychedelic/ Rock/ Cumbia style of music. And I need a lot of diversity on my tones, my music goes from clean reverb delay notes to crunchy and velvety power chords, every single sound that comes from my Revstar makes me happy and I love the look

I play for enjoyment so don't need "pro" guitars but have quite a few anyway because I enjoy them. I have had the RSS02T for about 6 months and it is so good I decided NOT to buy the MIJ for almost 3x the price. While it may be 'worth it' in terms of QC and Fit/Finish, what I want is a guitar that feels, plays and sounds great and don't care about the price really. The Revstar Standard is that good. OTOH, I started on Gretsch with a Indonesian Jet Jr. It was good enough to make me upgrade to the MIJ Players Edition Jet with Dynasonics and the difference there is VERY substantial and was worth the upgrade. Mid-grade Gretsch (Electromatics, etc) is made by the CCP and I won't buy them. The MIJ is a keeper.

Great review!! Thorough, very well informed, and fair. I've owned this same model guitar for about 6 months now. While I agree with much of your commentary, I do find that tweaking your amp makes a huge difference in creating usable sounds. The 4th position ESPECIALLY gains usability and character if you pull some of the "mud" away. You can get a nicely "quacky" sound, once you get your amp dialed in. Either way, really enjoy your channel, and I'm looking forward to your next video on the Revstar! Thanks loads!

Thank so much! For your Tele I’d either do it like a Strat with one tone for neck and middle and the other tone for bridge or do the Strat switching, master volume, master tone, and the other “tone” knob blends in the neck so you don’t lose bridge+neck. You could use a Super Switch instead and get other combinations, like middle on the switch is bridge+neck instead of middle pickup, but that gets complicated to wire yourself.

With regards to the tonal options, i believe the position 2 and 4 tather than giving you the "neck with a bit of bridge" and vice versa. Its actually "neck with a tiny pause before the bridge kicks in" which accounts for the capacitor, so its like a staggered start type thing. With the same happening in reverse in position 4, At least thats how i understood it listen get to one of the Yamaha guys. Very cool review by the way.

I have a revstar since a few months. Exact same model but in black. I just love the way she plays and feels and the looks are amazing too! I bought it specifically to play warm, clean-ish tones with nice reverbs and delay and a little bit of break up. The neck and middle position are absolutely perfect for that. It keeps the clarity but it sounds well rounded and still has character. On the "special" sounds: Neck position + focus/boost gives me a very woody, old school jazz sound which is very usable and nice. The bridge/middle in-between + focus is fun for gainy lead sounds. Comes very close to Brian May on something like Bohemian Rhapsody. It gives you that kind of edge, where everything sounds like there are tons of overtones coming through. But both are very niche sounds though that I rarely use. But they are also not in the way. I mean there are no negatives to having options as long as it doesn't compromise the "main three" sounds!

Have the wine-red p-90s version. I just stopped playing my other guitars. Beautiful feel, beautiful fit and finish, great guitar engineering, many many usable tones. Being a pedal making freak, I love a good bit of innovative passive electronics. And one of my favorite things to do is hit a chord and put my ear against the guitar to hear the note bloom. The resonance/chambering is pretty amazing. Just a bit of dissent, though. I feel like the boost function is really designed for playing overdriven/distorted/fuzzed. It really comes alive there--adds a lot of sustain and creamy midboost, and in those contexts it sounds GREAT. I agree it can be weird in the context of clean playing. Positions 2 and 4 also sound much more interesting in an overdrive context.

The quirky positions are just that: quirk. I know that Strats, Teles and LPs are "reference" tones in the guitar world but I kinda like the quirk and the fact that, hey, no, they DON'T sound like a Strat, a Tele or a LP. I bet those positions would be fun with a dirty slap delay, sort of channeling lo-fi Rockabilly or something like that. Or 60s horror movie soundtracks. I'd love to hear those with a dirty slap, some spring reverb, vibrato and a tremolo. Set the weirdness free!

I prefer the in-between position sounds when the pickups are out of phase, not because of how they sound when played into a clean(ish) amp but because of what they do with more extreme fuzz/distortion sounds. If the guitar was being demoed with a cranked Big Muff or a MK1 Tonebender or a Rat or a Life Pedal or even a high gain amp, then those “honky” sounds would/could come into their own. If the kind of playing and sounds used in the demo are what you do, then I can see how the variety might be of less use.

Agree with the boost, for me the 4 and 5 positions are useable and reminds me of a Gibson varitone ES like BB king often played. A buddy has one and he is a big slide player, he uses one of the boosted positions for slide a lot and it works with his band. This one hangs on the wall and is a go to noodling guitar. If you want to brighten the pickups you just need to raise the screw poles. Lowering the bridge pickup will improve the tone, but balance with the neck would make needing to lower the neck pickup too (maybe not enough space to go lower?). You can also tip the bass or treble side up/down to shift the tone around to get darker/brighter as you like.

Got one of these in January! To me initially the pickups were a lot brighter than classic sounding p-90's. I play heavier rock and thought they sounded thin. I think this is a great guitar for clean playing out of the box. I ended up replacing the p-90's with Seymour Duncan Customs P-90's and it became a lot easier to get good higher gain sounds out of the guitar. Personally I like the 1, 2 and 5 positions. The boost can be sweet for heavier fuzz sounds and leads. I don't like the boost on a clean channel, sounds too low end for me. But with fuzz/distortion it can work. Guitar plays well. I like the body shape, though it's not my favourite. 335 shape still has my preference. But I think it's great versatile workhorse guitar that's solidly built and offers a wide variety of sounds.

When it comes to Yamaha guitars most you wouldn't been seen on stage with but these Revstars are elegant and stately. I want one.

I like the push-pull switch on my earlier model Revstar 502TFM. That one just cuts out the mud to help when you go to the middle or neck pickup position. I think they tried to do too much with the models that came after as far as electronics. The only thing I like about the newer model here is the fretboard inlay. On my model they are just cream colored dots. The hardware on the 520TFM is brushed metal rather than chrome too, which I find aesthetically pleasing.

Great review. I've got the humbucker version, and found most of the switching options pointless as well, although I love the rest of the guitar. I quite like the pull switch on the neck pickup for a jazzy clean sound though. A straight ahead three way switch would have been a better choice.

I don't have an RS or other Yamaha/Ibanez with 1000 different PU options, but some of those might not sound great if you're playing the same riff on the same amp, with the same effects, etc., but might come alive with different genre, playing style, effects, amps, etc., So having them, at a reasonable price, is always better than not having them. It should almost be standard on all guitars, if like I said, the price increase is reasonable. It's a bit like strats, nobody makes SSS with a 3 way switch right? Even if you don't like position 2 and 4, who wouldn't want a 5 way instead of a 3?!

However, you better only buy it in person! I just received my brand new Revstar RSS02T packaged from Yamaha and it had a very high bridge, tool marks on the fretboard, cracks in the binding, high frets and a poorly fitted and cut nut causing buzzing. It is at the Luthier now to even make it playable...

I went to test this guitar, the pickups were sounding too boomy compared to others. I did not have the chance to modify it at the shop and ended up not buying. And I agree only few switch positions added something to the sound.

Oh wow that boost sounds worse than you'd expect from just a simple impedance change. I wonder if the transformer was after the volume in the circuit if it would fix that. Putting it before the volume essentially compounds the impedance interactions you get and darkens the signal more than necessary without any pleasant upper mid bump. The beauty of a high wound pickup that this is trying to emulate is the shape of that high frequency rolloff, but then again maybe this is because there's not also more capacitance in the windings? Hard to say, perhaps a cap in parallel with the transformer might change this? Probably not

Thank you for reminding me that a capacitor shifts the phase! Maybe I can use it for a mod.

I own one , a p90 model, and I would mostly agree with your take on this guitar. I would prefer fullsize pots and a switchcraft jack. And mabey down the line I may look into swapping pickups , however probably unnecessary. Mine barley has any 60 cycle hum. It's not noticeable at all. I do however like the boost, particularly in the bridge position. I think it depends on your playing and the style of music your playing. All that said it has quickly become my most played guitar that I own.i leave it out on the stand and don't have to worry about anything happening to it. Something I wouldn't ever do with my 335. I like that I can be a bit rougher with it. It's also my only p90 guitar currently so mabey that has to do with why I enjoy playing it so much but it's just a very comfortable guitar.

❤ great vid. One question, what pickup heights did you settle on??? Got this around 3 days ago, so that was a lovely video to watch, I agree play it through clean to get a real idea of the sound the guitar produces, look forward to the follow up!

Great review ...pickup foam is rubbish, replaced with foam that also has x3 springs...Yamaha London did offer to fix and setup the guitar but decided to do it myself...looking forward to the next post

I have this guitar and will say it's real value for money. Agree that position 2 and 4 are kinda useless but I will say that the "boost" selection sounds like crap on a clean amp setting but if you use medium to high gain setting on an amp with some delay...heaven! I get great smooth solo tones!
