The brand isn't important, but quality is. A cheap pair might last you two years at most, because poor quality leather wears much quicker, but a good one will last you, if you take care of them. You might have to get new soles fitted every couple of years, but they will repay those hours of care with years of service.

Cheap boots are garbage for tree work. They are not made well enough for the job. The boots I work in were $645 and will last for a decade. You can care for $100 boots all you want, but they'll be getting replaced by the time 1 year is up. Edit: I used to wear Georgia Logger boots and they're very good. But you're better off buying a few pairs and alternating them daily. They'll all last much longer.

Leatherworker here! You're doing a great job taking care of your boots, I personally use neatsfoot oil for most applications to condition the leather before the waterproofing step, but so long as it's getting some kind of oil that won't go rancid it's good. If you want to get a little more life out of that midsole you might try squeezing a little bit of shoe goo into the gap and letting it set!

@SnowPheasant

@@petercyr6287 Not really, just let the mud dry and knock it off the boots. For the best results I'd probably go in with a damp cloth and some saddle soap to clean the leather, but frankly a damp paper towel would probably do the trick. Then follow up with some oil and waterproofing again and they'll usually be good as new.

@SnowPheasant

@@ninemimesleft From what I've seen it shouldn't cause you problems. On the contrary, the conditioning step actually helps waterproof the boot by making it naturally repel water more and keeping it from drying out once you do apply your waterproofer. I've taken a wood saw to sipe them if the tread has worn significantly.. It was always amazing how that boot grease would be all soaked in by morning after a night in the room with the fire going in the fireplace . It was luxury for awhile not being soaking wet and cold on my long rainy commute to work (100 miles round trip in the rainy Pacific Northwest winters). That's very interesting about the various compounds that can be used for the leather. I have never heard of those brands. One thing, though, it seems like the pine oil and wax could make the boots a little flammable, LOL.

The leather soaks it into the fibers so maybe that is why I would be hard to set on fire

Personally, I just use Mineral oil mixed with beeswax. Cheap, easy to make and works great as a wood finish too.

We grew up using Mink Oil, but my dad's dad called it Duck Butter. 😂 I've got a pair of Red Wing boots I bought in 1980. Many soles have put on as well as insoles, but if you take care of them they'll last forever.

It's also just Carolina. I'm on year 5 of mine. Need a new sole but the leather is still sealed and not bad. Little cracking from drying out but I oiled mine and it's like brand new. Love those boots

I’ve got a pair of those Carolina’s with a composite toe and it has saved my toes at least 3 times while working offload. I’ve had one pair get warped and needed replacing after an 8000 pound can slid on top of them. Broke a couple of toes but I still have them thanks to those boots

Used Sno-Seal on a pair of hiking boots bought in 73. Finally tossed my Vasque Hiker IT'S in around 2010. Totally water proofed/snow proof.

So here in Oregon, foresters do their regular stuff on a rainy day because most days are rainy. however we do care for our boots just about how you do. I also sometimes employ a silicone waterproofer but many boots don't require it because like yours, they are already technically waterproof. Nice job on the boots.

I work on rigs and every time I get a new pair of boots I seal them with minx or duck oil. I've had my pair of red wings for about 8 months and it's about time to get a new pair. It's cool to see what other professions do to their boots.

Been kn construction for 30 years & it's amazing the amount of guys that do nothing to care for their boots. I tried em all & found the ones that work for me. They take care of you, so take care of them. Good boots aren't cheap either, so why not extend their life anyway you can? Also, i like the way you say oil. My buddy's Mom called it Earl! 😂

Carolina make such good boots. I wish the toe on mine hadn't gotten thrashed by a compactor, wasn't much in the way of saving them after that. On the bright side they saved my foot, which I'm pretty happy about still having.

And this is why I always recommend a quality leather boot man. My friends complain about price, then proceed to by new cheap boots every year 😂

If you don’t plan on taking care of them, it’s probably not bad to buy a new cheap pair every year. Better than buying an expensive pair and then ruining them.

My dude ... IV graduated to one step below hand made and I'll never go back.. No pun intended but my back feels a million times better and for whatever reason my feet don't sweat bad in these "Hoffman lineman boots" (full leather) IV had them for 2 years now allso. Iv never had boots last a full year so I'm impressed. 2 years old and all IV done is add heal taps so they don't wear out so fast and condition and wax them monthly ish. Best boots I ever owned . Think I'm going to get a pair of nicks next summer to see what those will do

I have steel toe leather boots that's close to 30 years old. I owned them since mid 90's. They still look very good for their age. They don't make them like they used to.
