I have a 2nd Gen that I love...there's certain things to watch out for, but aside from those issues (which were fixed by 2010-2015 models) they're a great vehicle. Mine is lifted on 33's with the rear gutted so I could add a pull out kitchen and sleeping area and storage. I drive it cross country from MN to Moab, UT a couple times a year. I go offroad camping on 4x4 trails on the way down there and back, and do some really epic scenic 4x4 trails while I'm down there camping for a couple weeks. Worth every penny and hour spent for the moments and memories it's given back to me.

@@jacobyo99 On the 1st generation the roof bump with the roof rack made the profile of the truck! Plus the rear seat is elevated a bit and leverages that bump. The bulge in the back was Meh - I was always surprised it took them five years to put the logo in the middle of it.

I’m glad you knew about the SMOD. I was going to comment on that and let you know. That is usually the reason those transmissions die. That Xterra sounds like it has bad timing chain guides too. It’ll run a long time like that but it has that loud whine. It should not whine like that. The fix is replacing the timing chains and guides. There are updated parts available from Nissan that will prevent it from happening again.

If you have issues down the road you have a ton of parts to swap around or if you want some extra content rebuild the old one on the bench and give it with the truck when you sell it. If not you'll have a ready to go backup. We rebuilt the 727 for my Dart on the driveway in front of it years ago just using a Atra transmission manual and a 50 dollar rebuild master kit plus a new pump and heavy duty cast band.

Hey, after the tranny swap you discovered a classic Xterra mystery problem...nothing when you turn the key. My daughter had an '05 that she loved but it developed the same no start issue. Two shops and then the Nissan dealer couldn't find/fix the problem. The dealer said it was fixed but the next morning it had the same problem. She got her money back from the dealer thankfully. She ended up trading the Xterra cuz she couldn't trust it. The Internet didn't offer a definitive answer. But JR found the fix. Way to go. BTW - Love the vintage Hooker Headers shirt.
