If you didn't know, one of the reasons that Antietam is so well known is that it remains to this day the single bloodiest day in American Military History with well over 22,000 casualties. Two particular places known for ferocious fighting there is DH Miller's Cornfield (Simply now known as 'The Cornfield') and a small sunken lane in the middle of the battlefield forever known as "The Bloody Lane." The dead and wounded were so numerous there that observers said you could walk down the lane and your feet would never touch the ground.

Thanks for visiting our country and learning a bit about our history. What you might not know is that many American Civil War battles had two names. The North named them after the nearest body of water..in this case Antietam Creek. The South named them after the nearest town or railroad junction, again in the case Sharpsburg, Maryland. So, the battle of Antietam for the North, The battle of Sharpsburg for the South.

I am so impressed that you showed such interest in our history. Unlike France, our history goes only hundreds of years, as opposed to France's 1000 + years. But I think if you explore our history one will find plenty of very interesting things about us and learn why we are the way we are. The battle of Antietam (pronounced An-tee-tum) is the bloodiest day in Americas history of combat. It was there that the most fierce fighting took place in the war for Americas soul. I do hope you enjoyed your visit, and I hope you gained a little appreciation of our culture. You have shared so much of your life with us, and we are humbled that we got to share a little of ours with you.

As I hope you remember I commented on the videos you made while visiting the cemetery’s in Normandy. And I want you to know how very impressed I am with the reverence you show to the individuals who lost their lives, doing what they felt was right and just for the people they loved. It’s not every young person who would show the respect and thoughtfulness you’ve shown while making these documentaries for the public to see. It’s very apparent you were raised by decent, caring parents, who instilled an appreciation for respect and decorum when visiting these hallowed grounds. Sadly this is not how all people of your generation(French or any other nationality) feel or react when visiting these places of honor. I must commend you, and I’m sure your parents for your kind and respectful approach durring your visits!❤️

@cyhawk4788
Жыл бұрын
@@matthewcostello3530 It is true that Gettysburg is more heavily commercialized than Antietam. There are many reasons for this, some of which being the location of each battlefield (Gettysburg is a much larger town than Sharpsburg so it can better support a large and consistent tourist population); some of which being the great deal of notoriety Gettysburg received both following the battle (see President Lincoln’s address) and after the war (it’s one of the most documented events in American history); and some of which being the sheer scale of the fighting and carnage that took place there. I actually spent two full days at Gettysburg after Antietam and I highly recommend spending at least a day there. It’s more than worth all the extra money you pay for the museum, tours, films, and merch. But both are special to me since I used to live within a 40 minute drive of each!

Yeah, the calorie counts in restaurants in America is usually pretty high. We're blessed in terms of availability of food, but how fast food prepares it definitely contributes to obesity in America. That combined with many people not learning good nutrition in school and living a more sedentary lifestyle results in a higher obesity rate. Hi Marie!! Here goes another try, lol! By the way, I like that big mike :) ! I am so glad you've gained a lot of new members, all of whom should love your exploration posts. (I think you even gained a Patreon, if I counted correctly - YAY) That Asian Market had a lot inside, including so many grocery items, great looking food dishes, a nice sized restaurant right there, and unusual items. The Filipino marinated pork looked interesting, as did the Kewpie Mayo and the Choco Boy you said was good. I would like to try the different flavors of those Pocky sticks too. The mall area had lots of cool shops like the music one and the Tacos Carlitos (never heard of it, but I would try, lol!). I loved the unusual and cool looking little two-seat vehicle there. I have eaten at Red Robin only twice, and it offered a lot of burgers and a variety of other stuff, but wow are those desserts ever so luscious and high cal 😉! You noticed the very large drink cups offered there, and I thought it was cool that you received the opposite comment from the person who visited France 😂. (You know, you are so right, I DO see "croissant" used a lot) Your salad looked really good to me, along with the other dishes, and I hope they were! The map of the different breweries was interesting too, and I recognize many of them, including Texas :) . (p.s. you do not look like you have any more weight to me 😉) Your visit to the Antietam Battlefield was so very interesting to me. It was a beautiful setting and a very big place, and it shows how much of a battle went on there. The cannons were truly HUGE, and I loved that it had so many statues, very tall monuments, historical signs and displays that explained the battles, state monuments, and a very large cemetery. I agree, that cemetery reminds me of your Normandy visit and videos, ones that I will never forget as they so impacted my heart and mind, as does Antietam. It was very peaceful, as you said, and so pretty. It is the resting place of so many soldiers, and I do love the sign that said "Not for themselves, but for their country!" They, as those did in Normandy, gave their lives to help other people be free - so unselfish💕. I am so glad you did have a restful Tuesday, that you and your friend badly needed after such a grueling plane trip and whirlwind weekend of activities! And I am truly glad that you are at home with your parents (your lenses made me think you were), and that you are beginning to feel better. I'm also glad you get your beautiful, precious car back soon, and I hope you continue to heal from such a difficult home-coming and such sad emotional trauma 😢. My great-grandfather, who was in an Ohio regiment, was captured in nearby Harper Ferry by Stonewall Jackson's corps, just a day or two prior to the battle (he was later paroled). In American English, ie is pronounced as a hard e. An tee tam. Many Americans had ancestors who fought on opposite sides. It was a tragic time in US history. It took a long time to heal from this war and some of the fallout lasted for over 100 years. On a lighter note, I have eaten at a Red Robin and enjoyed it. I was in Kansas City, MO when I ate there. Looking at all the calories on that menu was shocking, no wonder you thought you gained weight. The canon that you were looking at was called a Napoleon,. Just another oddity of that era.

But I would not have guessed that you, a visitor from France and likely unfamiliar with the details of U.S. history, would have chosen to visit it. I am impressed with you. I realize you are already back in France, but if you were to visit again and want to see another Civil War battlefield, I would highly suggest Gettysburg. A battle spanning several days around Independence Day in 1863, site of Pickett's Charge, the Angle, the "high water mark" of the Confederacy, and months later the site of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address upon the dedication of the National Military Cemetery.

I visited Antietam, along with Harper's Ferry, and Gettysburg in 1989. All very close to that area. Too bad you didn't go to Gettysburg, it's an even bigger experience, but I will admit that from just the little bit of footage you had of Antietam there, it's a lot more expansive than what I remember. I was only 15 at the time, so not everything would've sunken in, but I was always a military history buff. My uncle was a HUGE Civil War buff. I mean, if it wasn't about the Civil War or Golf, he didn't care. 😂 But that bridge at the battlefield, the Burnside Bridge, is kinda what the battle is known for in lexicon. Everytime you see images from that battle, it's usually depictions of that bridge and what happened there. Basically, it created a bottleneck in the advance of the Union Army, and it allowed the Confederates to fire down upon them from the ridge on the other side. Antietam was the single most bloodiest day of the war.

There is a certain kind of peacefulness at the US National Cemeteries and Battlefields.

Hey there, in the future the best way to pronounce Antietam is saying 'an' 'tee' (just like a t-shirt) 'tum'.

If you come to the United States and want to visit Louisiana,spend a short time in New Orleans. Lafayette is the place to go for excellent food. You can experience the different types of french speaking people. Breaux Bridge,Cecilia,St. Martinville,Lafayette each speak a different variation of Cajun French. In Lafayette Parish Louisiana ,we have a French Immersion program - children in Kindergarten on up are taught core subjects in French in certain schools. Ma mere parlait couramment le Francais comme sa 1 ere langue, a ete puni a lecole pour parlant "Francais". Doyle Brown.

Jungle Jim's here in Cincinnati is a true international market. They have food from all over. An ex girlfriend moved here with her parents because it was the only place in the East that had food that they wanted from home country of Taiwan. Walked Antietam with a friend when it was 10 degrees F. More men died at Antietam in one day than any day of battle that the United States has been in. Only Battle that had more dead was Gettysburg and that was over 3 days.

Thanks again Marie for taking such time to edit and make your videos so good. Always a good and interesting view. You and your companion made good choices of where to go again. I've never been to Antietam (nor to Red Robin) but now I would like to go. I never knew that Normandie was part of the States -- that's good -- so yes indeed you had already been in the States. Nice you had a slower day to relax and refuel.

Marie, it's so cool that you got to use this format. I think it works well getting to show video of the trip and talking about every section of it as you reflect upon it now. I am so happy to hear that things are going better for you and that you'll be getting your car back soon. I know what it's like to be without a car and it drives you crazy when you want to go somewhere and you just can't do it easily without one. It makes you wonder how people a thousand years ago managed? I loved the outtakes at the end of the video as well! I'm glad you got to see Antietam and learn a bit about that period in our history. I hope to visit the site sometime in the future. Now that you're going to be going on adventures in France again with your car, I'd recommend a specific site if you happen to be in Paris. It's the grave of Marquis de Lafayette, best friend of George Washington. He is buried in American soil from Bunker Hill and an American flag flies there every day. He is a man that brought our two nations together and he should be celebrated. www.findagrave.com/memorial/1641/marquis-de-lafayette/ Keep up the great work Marie! You deserve all the new viewers and so much more!

Perhaps the Verdun of the US. One of the most costly days in terms of lives in American history. Though Shiloh might be higher. A thoughtful place to visit. Where General George McClellan snatched a draw when he should have had an overwhelming victory. Good for you on your choice of sights to visit.

To help you saying Antietam, try it An-tea-tum. You will also fine, many of the battles were called different names, between north and south. Glad you went to one of our Civil War Battle fields.
