Yep, here in SE Alaska it happens every winter-they get left out and split. Also some of the guys put a very short tether on the end with a gillnet cork on it. Saves it if it goes overboard. I have seen some reamed out and glued to the butt of the shaft which helps if you get whacked while someone is using it as an added benefit. Mostly we use shorter gaffs and a halibut harpoon where the tip comes loose after a big halibut has been stabbed. Makes a toggle on a line to anchor that 200# slab. Great home project too. Take care. My brother in law loved your ideas. He's the fisherman. I think we will be pursuing them very soon. Thanks!

Hello, I am not sure whereabouts you live but if you get freezing weather in winter you might want to consider a drain hole top and bottom of your hollow tube. Water will get in there and if it does can split the whole tube. Good project. Take care. Doug

Thanks. I live in Southern California and it rarely gets below freezing, but I appreciate you looking out. However it is useful for everyone else who might be interested and it might be really important for them. I never even considered freezing...

For tip finish, make yourself an adapter so you can drive the compound with a cordless drill motor... easy way to get more consistent feed and better finish.

I was commenting on that very thing when I was working with my brother in law. Every time I need it, I think I need to make the drill motor drive next, and then, promptly forget. Great idea and really helpful input as always.

I read that, but was not sure how to approach that issue. So what I did, was to heat the part after I bent it to red hot and quenched it in water. I read about that suggestion on one of the machinist's forums. I was not particularly careful about the temperature though, so I am not sure if I actually reached a high enough temp. to adequately relieve the stress. Thanks for the comments, quite punny.
