I bought a PKS Scorpion. It arrived just yesterday. Great knife. Here's a fifth requirement- it can't be too pretty. I bought a Temagami Helle knife a few years ago and it's so gorgeous I am loathe to use it. PKS knives don't have that problem. They convey an attitude that says "I'm ready to go to work-- screw the battle scars."

Thanks for a comprehensive explanation. I have, however, some comments to make concerning this issue. Firstly, I do not belong the the "only-one-knife" school of thought. Being in the outdoors/wilderness is primarily about planning, and then preparation for following that plan. When going out into maybe unfamiliar territory one plans for foreseen and unforeseen situations. Therefore, in the category of "cutting" one can ensure that you have the right tools for situations you might face. Cutting tools take up very little room, and the weight involved could be less than 2 litres of water! So, let's look at your 4 features: 1. Full tang (I assume you mean length as well as edges visible). This might be the ultimate feature, but it is hardly a deal-breaker. Many great knives like Cold Steel, Falkniven and Morakniv (to mention a few) do not comply, but are still highly sought after across the world. Stacked blades (wood or leather) also don't comply. If one uses these knives for the purpose for which they were made, one should never break any one of them. For example, one of the iconic outdoors knives, the Cold Steel Trail Master, has an almost full length, but enclosed tang, and it is a great outdoors knife and hugely tough. 2. (0 deg spine. Yes, this is desirable. 3. Size! Ahh, very controversial! However, my contention is that one size does not fit all. Sometimes one needs a large, hefty blade for some heavy (mainly impact) work, whereas other times some fine, accurate even fiddly work (mainly contact work) is needed that would be difficult with such a large blade. For me, I would carry a large blade (my CD Trail Master San Mai III) probably attached to my pack where I can reach back and draw it easily. Then my regular belt knife would be a CD SRK San Mai iii (similar in size the the knife you showed) except I would not use it for the heavy work I mentioned. It is small enough to do most medium size work/tasks and is a useful size. Lastly, I would always have on me a smaller multitool type knife. My choice would be the Victorinox Hercules, carried in a pouch or on a lanyard. 4. Steel. This topic is probably the most difficult, but I believe you should choose the steel you believe you trust the most. Personally I would not choose a 1095 high carbon steel. I've seen too many knives in shocking condition after a few winter months of not using it. Sharpening. One advantage of having multiple blades is that, when used correctly, one probably wouldn't need it have to sharpen the blade in the field, as the load is spread across more blades. Also, a lot of tasks could be accomplished by other means than the blade edge (as you mentioned with scraping. ) I do not believe it's necessary to bash a knife through a thick 5 inch log by batoning. This can be done with wooden wedges, thus saving the knife edge. [Mors Kochanski was at pains to explain this.] Small logs of 3 inches or less is fine, especially with a large knife. I also don't think a knife should be used to cross-baton a knife across the grain - this seriously risks damaging the blade! That's what a saw is for! (I'd take a Silky Gomboy at least, preferably a Bigboy!). I also think that one does, in this day and age, have to fall back on a knife and flint for creating sparks. Small sparking steels abound and could form part of your fire kit, irrespective of your knife. These 4 tools (or similar, if taste differs) should suffice to accomplish just about any wood processing tasks one might face in the wilderness. Also, together, they probably weigh less than 2 litres of water. It would be interesting to hear your comments. Cheers!
