Lexus is going the wrong direction with small turbo engines, plastic interiors, and less premium feel with higher costs.

The turbo engines I could get over if it weren’t for the low rent interiors. What I was thinking while driving that GX is, even if it had the 4.6L V8, I still wouldn’t buy it solely based on the awful interior.

And to top it off they’re recalling the twin turbo v6’s and saying it’s due to a “debris” issue where debris remained in the engine post production (interesting that the debris made it into the engine in multiple global locations where it is manufactured) yet we know at this point it’s due to bearing issue which is a much deeper concern and now I wonder if Toyota/Lexus will replace all of the engines in all of the Tundra’s, Sequoia’s, GX’s, etc which would cost them billions to do according to estimates from experts. Time will tell. Disappointing to see Toyota/Lexus essentially killing off their brands with their decidedly cheap, chintzy plastic fantastic approach to design, engineering and manufacturing.

GREAT video. I work in sales for this brand and you’re spot on about the changing demographic. I’m all for Lexus making an off roader but I can tell you from what I’ve seen of 550 sales, the buyers are very different. GXs used to be sold in cash to people who knew exactly what they would cost. Almost every new 550 buyer has traded in some non-luxury SUV or truck that we have to send to auction, can’t give them top dollar on, and they’re being leased or financed at astronomical monthlys and long loan terms. That historically is not the Lexus customer and is not the customer who’s going to come back to Lexus for their next car.

What a great comment, thanks for sharing your insight! I was wondering about that because I was running some hypothetical numbers on a GX and at the price they’re charging and the high-ish interest rates we have right now, it’s insane even with a good amount down. Even with half down, you’re still financing over $40K. I’m not surprised, though. As they say, there’s one born every minute! I do hope that it is selling well for you all and helping you all make it a good year!
@seanj3695

Interesting info. I would think though that a lot of that has to do though with car prices being so insane now, and Lexus marketing to off road or camping users for some reason nowadays. Lexus is marketing their GX's to the hipster offroad crowd, same as the Bronco, Jeep and 4Runner. They're younger than the all cash true luxury car crowd. Lexus isn't the true UPSCALE brand that they used to be. I'm not really sure why they got away from that honestly. The new Toyota trucks are the same price as a damn Lexus and you can sell those to the offroad crowd. So I'm super confused about where Lexus is trying to go as a brand.

Didn’t fall for the overhyped GX550 trap and and drank the kool aid and never looked back. So the buyers?Who will buy the GX 550 will be uninformed, don’t care, have more $$ than 🧠s kinda folks or 4Runner owners who are all the above.😂. Great review! I am, but I think one of the market problems Toyota has today is most Toyota fanboys are overlanders, off-roaders, and not luxury buyers. So they listen to them wax on about how macho and capable and departure angles are the most important thing in a new SUV and not folks like us who want luxury and comfort and refinement. Also, having driven this GX I probably would put my money on the Land Cruiser. It’s still expensive AF but not as bad as this and even though the hybrid max is slow, it might not have the same transmission behavior I was seeing here.

Hi Josh! Oh no, what has Lexus done? I was not aware of a Lexus book, considering having 3 in my household and one is 2005 no one in the showroom ever mentioned there was one available. In regard to the quality of the GX550 I’m not surprised at the lack of luxury creature features. I’m quite sure Toyota/Lexus is not the only manufacturer that has cut quality. After going to an auto show last year there was nothing that stood out like oh my I’ve got to have it. The only thing that was noticeable was how many screens some had on the dash board. One was the Grand Wagoneer . How many dashboard screens do you need? We had a Tacoma as a rental for about two weeks and it was straight up bouncy and was like something from the 1960’s in the ride quality. Proud owner of one of the "end of the line" 2023 GX 460s. Build date 12 OCT 23, an Eminent White Pearl over Sepia Premium Plus. I owned a 2019 4Runner SR5 prior to that, and your videos helped finalize my decision to sell my 4Runner and get the GX. I have zero regrets regarding the vehicle itself, although sometimes I wish I had gotten the bench seat in the 2nd row instead of captains chairs. The GX is so much better for families that will actually utilize the 3rd row (we have 4 young kids). The rear AC unit, the 3rd row AC vents and light, the greater headroom for the driver and more comfortable seats, the better ride, the V8/6AT vs. the V6/5AT, all make for a significantly better vehicle than the 4Runner, which I was initially very hesitant to get rid of. If Lexus gets the GX 550 "right" in the next 5 years or so, I may possibly consider trading in my 460. But from what I'm seeing right now, they have a long way to go before that's going to happen.
@joshjamescars

Amazing!! I’m so glad you were able to get one while you still could! And yes, the GX is great for all the reasons you mention there! I think as your kids get older, though, you may want to look at a Grand Highlander or TX. As much as I don’t care for the TX it is way, way more practical for families who need the additional space for more people and their things. The cargo room behind the third row in the TX, for example is much larger than the GX. Also definitely keep an eye on the new QX80. That would be the best upgrade path from your GX460 (which you should keep alongside if possible). Cheers!!
@drw1926
3 ай бұрын
@@joshjamescars yeah, the TX is definitely on my radar. We're lucky in that the GX is our "second" car, not our primary family hauler. We have a Honda Odyssey for that, which is what my wife drives for all of her "soccer mom" duties. Since it's paid off she doesn't want to get rid of it, at least for the time being. But I'm already dropping hints that the TX would make a great upgrade over the Odyssey lol. I actually work at a dealership as a technician (not Lexus), the family that owns the dealership also sells Lexus and Infiniti, among other luxury brands, but not Toyota. (If you're in TX I'm sure you've heard of the dealership family; I'm in the DFW area.) So with our employee discount, the TX would actually be cheaper than the GH (or at least close enough in price that it's a no-brainer). I've never been much of a fan of Infiniti, so...meh. But that decision is probably 2-3 years down the road, so...who knows!

The rest of the GX trims handle like trash on the road, explains why they held back on those. We had a reservation from June 2023 and after we drove the first premium+ GX that hit our dealer lot, we cancelled it.

Toyota interior build quality has generally fallen in the past three years or so. While they've upped their game in design making the cars look more pleasing to look at from the outside, they seem to be cutting cost from interior materials.

You can get CarPlay in the 2022-23 GX460 too! That was one reason I held off on buying until 2023 so that I could get the new screen and it had a year of time to mature. IMO the 23 is probably the best year to buy. Even the upgrades made in 2020 and 2022 have been fully worked out and we still got the V8.
@albertn.1742

I absolutely love the exterior of the GX550, I think it looks the best in its class. Don't really care that the V8 is gone given strict emissions regulations and that I'm stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic 95% of the time. But wow the interior is so sterile and cheap for a $100k base model car pushing up to $130k where I live. Some contrasting wood or suede panels and inserts would at least break it up and make it look nicer. The lack of KDSS is also a huge huge miss. Most people buying this where I live will use this as a mall crawler so comfort should be the most important thing.
@joshjamescars

These are exactly my thoughts! I honestly wouldn’t mind the new engine if the interior was as luxurious as the 460. And vice versa, I wouldn’t buy this even if it had a V8 simply because the interior is an insult to anyone spending $80K+

Great video as always. Agree 100%. I have a GX 460. The GX 550 is nice but the interior lost the elegance of the 460 and 470. Doesn’t look like a GX at all. They could have at least given the luxury trim the classic wood inlays and higher quality controls that made it unique. Also, the windshield will most likely be damaged by stones as it’s so vertical. Hopefully the V6 is more reliable than the Tundra. I wouldn’t touch one for at least 3-4 years. Even the newer models of the 460 got cheaper. Lost the leather seats, gear shift, dimming side mirrors, and molding that protected the doors. Lexus seems to be going downhill to me.

So my partner has a 2024 NX350h. A family member has a brand new RAV4 Hybrid. In short, I TOTALLY agree with you… about everything. In my opinion the NX is a piece of crap. The materials are just mostly just ‘different’ to the RAV… not ‘better’. And im super fussy and take notice of all this stuff. And considering the NX is MUCH more expensive than the RAV, it’s an absolute joke. My partner was blinded by the Lexus badge, had no idea about cars, wanted nothing else, and wouldn’t listen to me about alternatives. My only question is… WHY? Why in the hell is this happening? Where are the funds being allocated to elsewhere????? It’s not like Toyota/Lexus are having to pay off billions in fines like Volkswagen are after Dieselgate, and hence cheapen their products. So have I missed something here?
@joshjamescars
4 ай бұрын
Hahaha I love the “different not better” because it’s true. I also had a 2023 NX350h and as an appliance it was a great car, but as a luxury car it fell way short and I ended up flipping mine after only 6 months. It was during the chip shortage and car shortage days, so I got all my money back, but still… buying was the worst decision, selling was the best decision. Also, I think it’s Toyota trying to get every dollar out of its customers as possible to offset as much of their portfolio of the future as possible. They’re way behind in EVs and R&D to catch up is costing them a ton of money. So skimp on everything we can while charging more and it’ll net them a much larger profit per vehicle and ultimately mean less money out of their own coffers for R&D on their future EV portfolio.
@benny9075

It’s just so weird tho. It’s not like they’ve allocated funds to the Bz4x, as that’s a piece of crap as well. Like what is ACTUALLY going on here?????? As a person looking for Luxury I was highly disappointed in the GX550 and its interior. You know what’s funny to me? People obsess over numbers. Horsepower, torque, 0-60, and number of gears. But I’d take our 6-speed auto that works perfectly over this confused 10-speed any day. I was just driving a new QX60 for review that has a 9-speed that works so much better too. And I’d take our V8 that makes less power than the V6 too. As for size, you might like the LX570 in that case. Since both the LX600 and GX550 grew, I think the GX550 is very similar to the LX570.

Remember the gx is based on the LC prado. The Prado has base utility model in some markets that’s essentially filled with hard plastics and cloth seats ands more design for work & heavy duty off road use. This is the model that the UN buys and other humanitarian organizations use them in field work. I’ve also seen cop cars and ambulances using this prado model. The hard plastic is really carry over from that model but I really hope the quality is good tho

The UN and NATO use all kinds of Land Cruisers but the iconic model you see in all the photos emblazoned with their (and commonly the Red Cross) logos is the Land Cruiser 70-Series, not the Prado. Also, you’re right that the GX is based on the Prado but prior to this new generation, there was a big degree of separation between GX and Land Cruiser Prado. That’s no longer the case.

My 2004 Lexus had issues with the cracking peeling polyurethane dashpad but, for a V6 CUV it has great pickup, fuel economy, and ease of driving. 235HP and 245 ft-lbs from a 3MZ-FE with a sweet sound despite only a 5900 rpm redline. I also love the wood trim and plush genuine leather seats. If I buy a Lexus, I'd go for an older model. The NX200T and NX300 are amazing, and since it's a smaller CUV, the 2.0T engine it comes with is plenty for this vehicle. I'd take a 2015 NX200T over a new GX550 any day no matter what. Even the 2018-2024 Lexus ES350 is much more premium than the GX550. But really wished Lexus made an ES F with the 3.4L twin turbo V6 but bumped up to 479 HP from 389 HP, a 7000 rpm redline, transversely mounted instead of longitudinal, and a mini V12 sound. Lexus really needs to bring back the pursuit of perfection slogan and really act on it.

On the suspension front it followed the LX redesign. The LX600 you have to option in AHC, whereas all trims of the LX570 had this. I'm sure some Industrial Engineer (my major, not employed in that field anymore) got a promotion because they ran the numbers and this was cheaper for the company. It betrays that Toyota standardization production as now your model mix is fragmented. For reliability and producibility you'd rather be making the same product all the time.
@joshjamescars

Interesting! I didn’t realize that. That’s actually really offensive given that LX is basically $100K+ for any desirable trim. The same is true of the Land Cruiser 200/300 too, though. Appreciate your review. I think Lexus set out to build something to compete with the Defender with a "rugged" interior and boxy shape. I think you are right tho, Lexus should have spent a little more effort on this interior to differentiate from the Landcruiser a bit more. I think a lot of car companies unfortunately are going that way with the interiors and I'm sure it has to do with price point in a tough market. Too much technology, not enough refinement. I have not driven it, but I have spent some time with it and one additional thing that came to mind to me was it felt so fragile. Body panels are super thin and the exterior plastics felt so flexy. It does not scream quality to me.
@joshjamescars
3 ай бұрын
Yes! Completely agree with everything you say here. And to your point about differentiating it from the Land Cruiser, that’s what I don’t understand. Why bother even making a Lexus version if the interior is going to be actually less nice, IMO, than the Land Cruiser. I’d have no problem with this if it were a Toyota vehicle being sold at the Toyota dealer for maybe $5-10K less given the difference in brand. And I also completely agree at the over indexing on technology over refinement and the way everything in cars is getting so thin and cheap these days.

I, too, am disappointed with what's happening with Lexus. I've been a Lexus owner for 30 years (ES, LS, GX, multiple GSs) and am now a TX350 owner (wife's kid hauler). The quality of the TX is very Toyota-ish, not what I experienced from my previous Lexus vehicles. The Mark Levinson audio in the TX is total garbage, and the fit and finish are subpar. I was considering the GX as a replacement for my 2017 GS350 FSport, but I am now having second thoughts and, for the first time in years, considering other brands like Acura. The Mazda CX-90 is incredibly well done.

I had the same thoughts and feelings about the TX (and the new RXs I’ve driven) both in materials and the ML too. The ML “pure play” system that they use in those cars is supposedly a lighter and or more eco-friendly hardware which I suspect has something to do with that. I’ve also heard the new GX’s ML isn’t as good as the ML in the 460 that I have. I also love, love, love the GS and regret not buying one before they discontinued it. I just had the Infiniti QX60 in for review and if you like old Lexus luxury, that’s one to look at. Video should be coming out here in the next few weeks.

Thanks for the video. I was going to test drive a 2024 GX 550 on August 28, 2024. I will look for a 2022/2023 GX 460. I am also going to test drive a 2024 GMC Yukon AT4.

Great video! Loved how honest you are and how you provide info on what you notice and feel and like and dislike without it seeming like you’re completely bashing the brand/vehicle. I am currently on the list for a GX550 with my local dealer. I have previously owned two 4th gen V8 4Runners, which I loved. I have driven a 2023 GX and felt like I was driving more of a soft riding car, which is not what I expected it to feel like. After watching your review on this, I think I will be very happy with the new GX. I am looking to step up from a 4th gen 4Runner, but have never been super in love with the 5th gen 4Runner. And I don’t want to go to Toyotas new 4 cylinder 6th gen 4Runner and think their new Landcruiser is hideous. I really hope that this new GX is that step up I want, but still brings in the roughness that the older 4Runners had that drove like a truck vs a huge car. Thank you for the great video that was informative but not obnoxious. I know I may be one of the few who is looking forward to the features this has. I’ve never owned a GX before this, but I think you got its absolutely right in that this will cater to those of us past 4Runner owners who are looking for a step ip from them. I personally am a HUGE Toyota fan and have owned several of them and I want to stay in a brand/family that’s reliable. Totally agree that previous GX owners are not going to love these changes, but again as a previous 4Runner owner, I’m so excited for it.

Hello! Thank you for watching and for the kind words, and glad this was helpful to you! I think you’ll really like the new GX! Before you commit, however, do read up on the myriad of problems that the V35A engine is having in the Tundra and LX600. The GX does use different turbos, but a design flaw in the engine block (which is shared with tundra and LX600) seems to be the root cause of the issues. Personally I’d give it at least 2 years for them to address the issues in their other trucks before I’d feel confident sinking this much money into a vehicle.

At the rate it’s going I don’t think I’d get one this anyways. We only have 2 local dealers here and they have a long wait list. And I requested a white in a luxury+. I have heard about the concerns with the engine/turbo issues. My thought is that if there is an issue, it’s warrantied and if it’s a recall issue it’ll be fixed/corrected by Lexus. So while I totally get this, I don’t know that it’s a huge deterrent for me. Play I sold my 4Runner almost a year ago to save up for this lol.

Just snagged a 2019 GX460 Luxury with 9k miles - White over cream - lidar etc etc. There is nothing that will mimic this luxury and quiet and refinement on offer in 2024. The only potential downside is the MPG of the V8 - but you know that going in. I might expect these V8 GX to catch a bid now that the brand new GX is having issues. Best to all.

Congrats! As for the gas mileage, if you look on the forums people are only getting around 15mpg with the turbo V6 where the WORST I ever do with my V8 is 16 but can do up to 20 on the highway. So… for the best economy you want the V8 that doesn’t have to work as hard.

I totally agree with you! The 2024 GX and the TX both scream cheap inside and out - how disappointing! They were both conceived during Akio Toyoda’s tenure. I guess it’s gonna take a few years to cycle through the remnants from his reign. Thank you for staying true to your opinions!

It’s important to remember that Lexus and Toyota operate independently (like Hyundai/Kia). They share architectures but the decisions at Lexus are under Lexus watch, and I believe that TX and GX were brought to life under Koji Sato. Who happens to be Toyota’s new global CEO which I would assume is why we are seeing some of these Lexus decisions trickling over to Toyota. Koji Sato is also the one who set Lexus on its path to be an EV-only automaker by 2030.
@TheBjjones

@@joshjamescars Both the new TX and GX models were actually developed and approved officially under Akio Toyoda's leadership as the president and CEO of Toyota/Lexus, well before he resigned in 2023. Also, Koji Sato didn't hold a key decision role nor had any real involvement in developing Toyota/Lexus vehicles, as Sato was the Chief Branding Officer (CBO) for the Toyota/Lexus division/GAZOO racing company in 2020- 2023, before assuming the position of CEO and president of Toyota/Lexus. So in the grand scheme of things, Koji Sato is just a marketing professional who is merely a figurehead, enabling Akio Toyota to operate behind the scenes without scrutiny.

My sentiment exactly! For example, the rear wiper placement and the bulge left in the opening (where the motor of the rear wiper is) when the window is popped open is unacceptable. It is such a major design flaw from a functionality standpoint and design standpoint that I'm shocked. It's shocking that they haven't tucked away the rear wiper thereby removing the bulge and making the rear window opening when popped open, flat and more useful. That is a single reason. I am leaning towards a 4runner and not a" luxury" Lexus.
@joshjamescars
4 ай бұрын
That’s actually the same way it is on the GX460. It needs to be there to latch the door in place to the lift gate. Although I completely agree about not hiding the wiper. Even the 4Runner kept it up in the spoiler. Also, the 4Runner should be a much better value, even though it will probably be expensive.
@user-rw7xd7qy3j

Yes. However, I wish they would have made that design change to have the window more functional and roll down like the 4Runner rather than pop up. Thereby eliminating that bulge and making the space much more useful. I've also watched a few videos from KZitemr tinkerers (I think that's his name) kzitem.info/news/bejne/ko6ax5eZn3-poWksi=MUKfsUOPFK7GxifH. and a few other owners that reiterate your issues. Hood rattling, engine noise, etc.. And point out some engine block issues that mechanics are seeing... I'm going to wait for a few years for them to work out the kinks before I consider a Lexus again. Or I'll have to move to another brand.

Beyond stupid idea re the placement; tucking it up under the spoiler would also protect it from ice, freezing rain, etc.

I picked up my 23 GX460 Luxury with Off Road Package last March. Love it everyday. I had waited 12 months to get it the way I want it in exterior and interior color. Not a big fan of V6 turbo. It runs much hotter and less reliable. The V6 turbo Toyota put in the latest Tundra had reported issues after 20k miles. GX460 is quiet and smooth. Love the V8. I got 18mpg in city and 24 on highway. Changed the oil at 1k and 4k miles. It had only 5k miles. Too bad I am moving to Taiwan next month due to job assignment. Lexus in Taiwan does not have GX460. Ihipping company told me it will cost me $30k+ for the import tariff and government inspection fees plus potential of impoundingstorage fee of the vehicle at the inspection center for months(Lexus Taiwan never sell GX460). I have no choice but to hand my keys to local dealership. Going to enjoy every moment one day before I hop on the plane to Taiwan. Simply sad to see Lexus screw this up.

Josh, the v35a engine in the GX, LX, sequoia, etc, has been having major issues. Even the ones being built in Japan. And this has been spanning for 5 years now. There’s numerous videos on KZitem stating the unreliability of this twin turbo v6 engine. So I wouldn’t be too envious of this engine if I were in your position.😂

OH 100%. I’m not envious of this engine at all… I just meant that for people who would rather have more horsepower and torque and a faster 0-60 over the refinement of the V8, it will be a better choice. BUT, you’re spot on. I wouldn’t put my money on any of these V35A cars.

So, I am on a waitlist for the Premium+, and I totally get your position on this vehicle. However, this GX line is in direct competition with the Land Rover Defender. The rough and tough SUV line that is more Sport Utility than Lux, but has a subtle mix of both. So the buttery soft seats, real wood accents, no noise interior, floating on a cloud drivability is obviously gone. 😢😢 It's shocking but, I get it. Maybe the Luxury level will add these things back in 2025.

That’s right, but the Defender being under the Land Rover brand means it’s also in the same “premium” class versus luxury. It’s luxury-priced but that’s about it. I still think the GX is a good vehicle but definitely drive the Premium+ if you can. It’s not the trim I would buy anymore (even though my 2033 GX is a Premium Plus too).

I bought a 2017 GX460 in 2020 for 48000 CAD or 35k USD. I also have always owned a 3 series BMW as my regular car which I continue to adore. The GX is a beast of a car. It holds value incredibly well. The only minus is its a gas guzzler, but for that you get a V8 that will last forever and never a turbo breakdown. I do love the new GX as well. The look is sick!

The fact is (and this may be part of their internal strategy) that Toyota is trying to move more upscale in the market, already occupied by Lexus. This is why you see the same parts bin and recyling of material. The new RX's use the same side mirrors as a RAV4.

Just did my first test drive of the GX550 premium trim. I have a deposit on an OT+ due in this summer. I currently drive an x7 and was not expecting it to compare since they are totally different vehicles. I have owned FJ cruiser,100 and 200 series Land Cruisers. I liked it better than the FJ and felt more more connected to the road than a 200 series. The interior is okay but not luxurious. It was what I expected and went into it with more timid expectations

I think for your use, you’ll love it. And I hope the OT+ rides better with the eKDSS system in place. That was my biggest issue with the one I drove (beyond the interior). Also, I’m guessing reliability isn’t a huge issue for you, but definitely do some googling about the V35A engine and its issues so you know what to look out for in your ownership of the GX.

@@joshjamescars I pickup the vehicle this week OT+ Love the seating position and head room. Visibility massage seats and clear hud are excellent. Car looks amazing with incognito and black roof. The ride is more rough than I expected. It does jar the vehicle on minor bumps and imperfections in the roads here in Houston. It feels a bit buggy and not very smooth honestly. Looks is a 10.
