The only correction I'll recommend, as a security professional, is to use a pass phrase. Don't worry about the first letter of each word - just use the whole sentence. Make sure to mix it up with letters, numbers, and non-alpha characters. One other trick is to use the phrase and then use the name of the service in there. So "One for the money and 2 for the show!" becomes "One for the Google and 2 for the show!" or "One for the Amazon and 2 for the show!" Helps make sure you don't repeat passphrases.
@FishersShop

Yup, Passphrase or an Authenticator is a good addition
@judmcfeters9054
20 күн бұрын
A contrary option from a security professional… 1) a passphrase over a password would have made NO DIFFERENCE in this case. 2) a passphrase is still a password - just a longer password. While a passphrase does provide “some” protection against a brute force or dictionary attack, ALL passwords can be hacked! Period! End of discussion! This has been a fact since about 2008. That’s why 2 factor authentication is so important. The point of difficult passwords is to make your account more difficult to hack than other people. Because hackers, like most people, are naturally lazy and target low hanging fruit because it’s easy. Don’t be low hanging fruit!
@scott5minutes

@@judmcfeters9054 This is very true. Password length does provide a greater degree of protection, but it can still be compromised. 2FA is an absolute must, as was said in the video!

Digital fraud in the US is over a 10-billion-dollar industry. The perpetrators, frequently overseas, are almost NEVER CAUGHT. Authorities don't even try in most cases. Without consequences this problem isn't going away and is getting worse. A sad reality based on a vulnerable population and ample predators safe from convictions/penalties. This is one area where folks have to protect themselves because the proper authorities haven't the resources or support to make it happen. It's a shame that even in an election year this subject is never brought up, let alone a platform topic, when the impacts are profound on every citizen's life.

As a 911 dispatcher, i implore you please, please do NOT call 911 for this. 911 is for immediate threats to life/property. Utilize your local 7 digit number for law enforcement complaints such as this. That being said, I personally do not yell at people when they call for routine issues as it's plastered on every emergency vehicle you see and drilled into people's heads since childhood.

I can confirm Drew on this. When I lived in Michigan we had a fire station down the road from us, and had their local number. People in my neighborhood were explicitly told not to call them, but to call 911 regardless of urgency (even for non-emergency situations). In Tennessee we had a non-emergency line to call for local police. Instead, I would say check your local policies and follow those. Start by reaching out to a non-emergency line first if you’re unsure.

Drew…thank you. I am relieved to learn that you were not seriously or permanently impacted financially or personally from this event. This past year my elderly mother lost a fair bit of money as the result of someone fooling her through online contact. Since that happened to her, my family decided that it was important to move beyond the emotions and be straight-forward and vocal to everyone we know about how the scammers took advantage of her and how common it really is. From our experience, I can attest that the embarrassment of being victimized by a scammer is strong…and they count on that. The malware captures the browser session states - they never actually get the account password, etc. What they get is a clone of your current browser state that they just load up and go. Google asks for credentials, the browser replies with the captured session data, and they're in. As far as Google is concerned, it's a perfectly legitimate, logged in user session, so they grant access. Could they stop this? Of course they could! Unfortunately, that would cost money - and that might impact some VP's Coke & Hooker budget, so it's never going to happen. ;)

Sorry you had to go through all that, Drew, and thank you for educating the rest of us on this. Also loved the outtakes.😂 I've been there, and had some choice words to share due to the mistakes.

Glad your back and safe, love your videos! Even my wife (non-woodworker) asks me if "that guy who steals wood from his neighbor" has a new video out sometimes! Are you using a teleprompter in this video? I'd like to know what device or software your using for that.
@FishersShop

I picked up the Neewer teleprompter and just use their software on a tablet. Super easy to use.

What a coincidence that Aura wanted to partner with you right when you get hacked. Seems very convenient.

We should have a law in place that forces social media platforms to not only provide a means to recover their account, but it should be a requirement that you speak with a live human being support person. They make BILLIONS and have a very small staff. They can hire a team of 3 - 5 people to handle these types of situations and answer the phones

Sounds like you got very lucky in the end - I've heard it often doesn't get resolved nearly so fast. The only correction I'd make is to not use 911 (ridiculous that you were told to) and call the local police dept directly instead.
@FishersShop

I was instructed to call 911 directly. Seemed strange for me too but that's what they wanted me to do.

I still don't get why people keep using their main Google account for everything. Start using app passwords instead. App passwords are sub-credentials under your main account, but they have very limited permissions when set up correctly. For instance, if you’re using an app to upload videos to KZitem, that account doesn’t need access to your email. So, you only give that app password the rights to upload to KZitem. If you suspect that the credentials are compromised, you can easily revoke that specific app password and create a new one. I also don’t understand why Google isn’t enforcing the use of app passwords for applications that don’t support OAuth 2.0, or at least reminding content creators regularly not to rely on their main Google account for everything. You are not the first KZitem content creator that got hacked and certainly not the last!

What a miserable thing to go thru Drew. I'm glad you were able to get things back up and running. Good to hear too that you got help from the internet company.
