Great interview! Seen him live two times (one of the times as a duo with Lunny). I love his music, I do hope he releases an album with his takes on Woody Guthries songs, I'd buy that.

he was in dorchester new brunswick a tear ago. beautiful night. he's been my favourite musician for years. we chatted briefly about mining. right across the straight cumberland county is full of coal, and the tragedy coal mining brings. i hope he comes back someday. he sold out saint john. i love that he wrote letters to woody guthrie. i should write him letters.

Such a great conversation between friends. Andy's life and work involves so many strands: traditional songs of Ireland, particularly Ulster, Balkan instrumental music, irish instrumental music, political songs, autobiographical songs, relentless travelling.....and all done with such enthusiasm. I did two gigs with him on my first trip to Australia (Brunswick and Cairns) and this interview brings back very happy memories! Thanks!

I've seen Andy several times, in small folk clubs as well as being lucky enough to see Planxty reunion at The Barbican in 2004. He is amazing, able somehow to perform so many things at once, and his diction is incredible - listen to "The Boys are on Parade" if in any doubt! A true legend - hope there's still more to come Andy.....

One of my idols. I have played mandolin for the last 18 years due to Andy’s inspiration. I almost got to see him in Berkeley California a few years ago, but I had to fly to China two days before the concert. An opportunity missed to meet a hero. Thanks Andy for your music and inspiration!

so happy so see Andy still at it in these times, I haven't had a chance to watch the whole thing yet but aside from thanking him for the peace and inspiration he emanates, I would like to know what were some of the artists that inspired his Bulgarian/Greek styles on the Bouzouki, I am of Greek and Irish descent myself picking up the bouzouki mainly because of his playing. Cheers! if Andy sees this.

2.15:"Driving the car is a great way of clearing the head and thinking poetically". This is interesting. Seamus Heaney said that when he was stuck for inspiration , a drive in the car often brought the required. Its strange what thoughts can cross your mind when your moving with the seat belt on. If I understand it correctly, it may be something akin to hypnosis. In hypnosis the "body" is put to sleep or is distracted and then the mind can range freely. Seamus Heaney: "And sometime make the time to drive out west/Into County Clare along the flaggy shore....."

‘Banks of the Bann’ hymn tune might be Lord of all hopefulness -Jan Struther - about 1931. Although another set of words come to me.. ‘ When I am a roving away in the hills... I pity the city folk who are never so free.. ‘ not sure what that is and google didn’t help.

Actually, it’s possible Struther took the tune from the song... so Banks of the Bann’ is the original.
