If you have never had an animal encounter in a zoo, then this is one for you. A meerkat encounter is one of the funniest things we have ever done.
We had traveled to New Zealand on a cruise ship. One of our day trip excursions was a stop at Wellington. So we decided to head to the local zoo and see what fun we could have in the short time we had available. We were lucky in that they were offering a meerkat experience just as we arrived. So without hesitation, we booked in.
Well, aided by Amber, Wellington Zoo meerkat keeper extraordinaire, we had a totally hilarious and awesome close encounter with her mob of meerkats. See what you think!
FUN FACTS ABOUT MEERKATS
A group of meerkats is called a mob, often with 20-50 members in the gang.
They have excellent eyesight to spot spotting predators in the air from more than 300 m away. Their peripheral vision is very good and the dark patches around their eyes effectively cuts out glare. They are often seen standing on their back legs, balancing using their tails, constantly checking out their surroundings.
A mob will have one "sentry" meerkat on guard to watch for predators while the others forage for food. If the sentry spots danger, it barks loudly or whistles in different ways depending on the level of urgency of the threat.
For a high-urgency land predator alarm call, meerkats will scatter down their nearest burrow entrance. For a high-urgency aerial predator alarm call, they will crouch down and may look skyward. Even at helicopters or planes as they fly overhead. Very funny!
If you are ever visiting Wellington, then we highly recommend you go to the Zoo:
