In one of the past issues - • НА ВСЕ 10 ВОПРОСОВ НЕ ... we talked about a "Radioactive boy scout" who, at the age of 17, assembled a homemade nuclear breeder reactor in a barn near his home on the outskirts of Detroit.
But now you will see even more seditious developments.
Who knows, maybe one of our subscribers already has a portable nuclear reactor in the basement to generate energy. Seems fantastic? Let's see. Let's start with fairly well-known cases and finish with the most surprising examples. Let's hit the road.
Richard Handle collected radioactive parts, old clock hands, smoke detectors, and even uranium and thorium for his home reactor.
He wrote about all the experiments for about six months on his blog, but the police noticed him only when he wrote a letter to the radiation safety service to ask the authorities if his experiment was legal. Handle was arrested and found guilty of violating the radiation safety act and the environment act. After the trial, he was sentenced to a small fine of fifteen hundred euros and released.
It would seem that another story about an uneducated eccentric, but what do you say about the world-famous company that 30 years in a row hid in his basement a small reactor.
The well-known Kodak company, a manufacturer of photographic equipment, admitted that it had owned a small nuclear reactor since 1974. Only a few people knew about the installation. The reactor was located in the basement of Kodak headquarters in Rodchester, new York. The company claims that for more than 30 years, the nuclear plant did not pose the slightest danger to others.nevertheless, the reactor worked on almost one and a half kilograms of uranium enriched to 93 percent. This is the level, which is quite enough for use in an atomic bomb. A nuclear reactor the size of a conventional refrigerator was located in a basement with concrete walls 60 centimeters thick and controlled remotely. Neither the city nor the state knew of its existence. The joke is that private companies do not have the right to have such reactors and work with active radio material. However, it turned out that in the 70s, the US government approved the production of such reactors for large companies, and two reactors were produced under this program.
One of them was sent to the us Department of energy, and the other was just bought by Kodak. It turns out that the nuclear reactor really home size has already been created, and quite a long time and, apparently, worked steadily all thirty years.
But such stations do not pull on the name of portable, but they can be called mobile.
Miniature installations the size of a standard sea container can deliver from 10 megawatts for 10 years without refueling. The reactors are completely self-contained and safe, maintenance-free and at the end of their service life simply recharged for another ten years.
Reactors can be used both for electricity generation and for heating.
Such a station can feed an entire village or a small town.
The closest in principle of operation are the most common reactors, which were installed at Russian nuclear power plants. The fuel used is uranium nitrite, which has a higher thermal conductivity. Here everything is simple - the higher the temperature of the reactor, the higher the temperature of the steam. And as a consequence, the performance of the steam turbine, which produces energy, is higher. The unit with fuel and cooling system has a mass of 20 tons and is designed for 10 years without refueling.
The entire system can be transported by truck. Upon arrival at the site, the barrel with the reactor is simply buried, access to it and any maintenance is not expected at all. At the end of the warranty period, the barrel is dug out and sent to the manufacturer's factory for refilling. According to the designers, the design features make these reactors safe. It is impossible to overheat and explode, since the pressure does not increase with the temperature. The authors of the technologies assure that this reactor will never enter the supercritical mode. And if someone intentionally damages the shell, the active material will quickly cool down. And the reactor itself will turn into an iron block isolated by a thick layer of lead.
