I re-uploaded this to include the Q&A section. Also, I just recently added captions.

How could this argument be properly summed-up in a statement of length 1000 words? Or 500 words? Or 100 words? Or 20 words?

45:29. There IS a good reason for supposing such a child would ascribe personhood of an entirely other variety to that of our own, and of themselves, to the talkative toys in the nursery. According to Ayer, once out of their nursery and able to interact with other human persons - the child could detect differences between the behaviour of fellow human beings and the automata. However, if that is so: why would they fail to detect them relative to themselves originally in the nursery? If there is some qualitative character, discernibly non-human, that becomes clear by contrast with human behaviour: how would the child miss it when it came to their own behaviour, human as it is, as contrasted with the automata companions in their nursery? It seems, that unless the automata were made so convincingly - that not even comparison with other actual human beings made any detailed differences in the qualitative character of their behaviour apparent as non-human: there is no reason to suppose the child would not have noticed those qualitative differences with respect to themselves already in the nursery as non-human. The child could see, e.g., that the movements of the automata were more jarring and ponderous than their own fluid command of their limbs. They could notice that the automated responses of the automata were short, superficial and perhaps repetitive - when contrasted with their own quick thinking and rapid, rich, replies to the greetings of the automata. So forth. And thereby discern that they (the automata) were not quite like it (the human child). I presume these are precisely the sorts of things Ayer has in mind, when he says the child could subsequently contrast them with human behaviours. And they would crucially be in evidence even in the nursery and prior to the child meeting any fellow human beings. And so the child WOULD be thinking of the automata as “persons,” if at all, only in some sense significantly different from how they think of themselves as a person - and, later, other human persons. Or, they would be thinking of “persons” as somehow broad enough to be inclusive of automata - non-human differences detected, notwithstanding. Which is still, centrally, quite different to what we, those of us brought up outside the nursery, mean by “persons.” Either the child in question would think of the automata as “persons” in some way dramatically different to itself and, later, ourselves. Or it would mean by “person” something quite different altogether, to what we mean by it. Ayer cannot escape both.

isn't there a difference between a concept of a person and personal identity?

I wish I had the intellect to be an employed philosopher- ie I could write essays for money, possibly be a professor- but I have, at least, the intellectual curiosity and I do understand some of the ideas of these great minds...Thank you for uploading -again- do you have a bad ie racist? agenda- or religious bias- I ask because you "re-loaded" ? I always look inside a channel before I subscribe- only logical?! Yes?! I am NOT any "ism" - well, I don't much like Ikea! An entire house as in Fight Club, an entertaining movie with good actors....my favorite scene is the "carnage" left over in our hapless "hero's" Ikean living room- oddly enough- it doesn't look much different- my parents kept, Danish Modern furniture, not as in the pet sense! although the pieces were so well made they still have another 50 years in them- my mom just died, a few weeks ago- so I had the sad task of "off to the charity shop"- delete this as it has zilch to do with philosophy, even aesthetics- the discipline relating to art? Not skincare- which I DID STUDY, and actually ( with many late nights, codeine- throbbing headaches in my attempt to write an essay or two on, lord knows who or what!) I got an "A" - I suspect my professor felt sorry for me! I still enjoy the subject and am currently trying to understand and absorb, semiotics- do you have any suggestions- kind ones- not, Semiotics for Dummies! Namaste ( pray Putin gets the hell out of The Ukraine) Thank you.
