Dickey Betts on lead guitar here. Chuck Leavell on piano stepped in after Duane's death and provided a new dimension to the band. He was a great session musician and jazz pianist who formed his own band Sea Leavell after the Allman Brothers first broke up in the late 70's. Their first album Sea Leavell: Cats on the Coast was an absolutely phenomenal piece of jazz heavily influenced by Southern Rock. More than a decade later Chuck would step in to lend his talents to The Black Crowes on their highly regarded debut Shake Your Moneymaker. Cats on the Coast is definitely worth a listen. Allman Brothers alumnus Jai Johanny Johnson was percussionist for the band.

This was the opening number for their 1974 concert at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman and after it Greg said "We're gonna play every song we know tonight so get ready for a good time!" The piano was played by Chuck Leavell who is just an incredible player. It was an epic concert that had a certain thin brunette from Hollywood watching her singer/organist boyfriend from the wings - Cher. He got with The Rolling Stones in the 80’s and became their music director and keyboardist in the late 80’s and still holds that title. He is also a well known tree farmer and conservationist outside Macon, GA (original home of the Allman Brothers). There’s a great movie out about him now called “Chuck Leavell-The Tree Man” that follows his career as the best rock keyboardist of all time and his love of family and tree conservation.

To answer your question about who is playing the guitar, it's the one and only Dickey Betts!! Les Dudek and Tommy Talton sat in on some rhythm for the album, but the band only had one guitarist at this point, Dickey. I can't tell you how relieved and happy we all were when this album was finally released! This is the first album after Duane and Berry's deaths, and there was a very real possibility we might not have an Allman Brothers Band. With the addition of Lamar Williams on Bass and the great Chuck Leavell on piano/keys, thankfully the band hung together!! This album was blaring out of quite a few dorm windows on the quad at the University of South Alabama in the summer of 73!! If you're digging the "Brothers and Sisters" album, your obvious next choice is "Jessica"!! Talk about a feel good romp! Perfection!

Southbound was released on the Brothers And Sisters album (Sept 1973) It was the first full album recorded by TABB after the sudden death of founding member and blues aficionado guitarist Duane Allman. On the 1972' double album Eat A Peach, Duane performs on the live songs as well as some of the studio songs. Sadly Duane's passing was only the first the band would have to endure. 12 months later, bassist Barry Oakley also died in a motorcycle accident. The accident occurred very close to where Duane had his fatal accident. Unbelievably sad. RNB

@@ricknbacker5626 I don't know......At the time I certainly didn't think of it in those terms, just a great, rolling, blues driven tune with a weird time signature. I really can't say what it spawned, although I'm sure a lot of southern musicians were inspired by early ABB, especially Fillmore East. I would have to say the first bands I listened to, that would later be labeled as "Southern Rock" were really not much like the ABB, and those would be The Marshall Tucker Band and Wet Willie. Skynyrd's multiple guitar assault on the first album was closer, I guess. Interesting question! I know Greg didn't much care for the label...I'd say the "Southern Rock" thing seems almost larger than life when you consider the relatively short time span of the heyday and the few groups that were labeled as such. ABB, MTB, LS, Charlie Daniels, Grinderswitch (minor), Wet Willie, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Blackfoot (minor), Outlaws, maybe Black Oak Arkansas.

First time I saw the Allman Brothers was when Brothers and Sisters was released. Great album from top to bottom and having seen hundreds of bands, still one of my most memorable shows. Piano player is Chuck Leavell who has been the keyboardist for The Rolling Stones I’m since the early 80’s.

Dickey Betts on guitar. They had one guitar only for that song. Gregg Allman was their only singer then while playing piano and organ. Duane had died earlier.

THEIR CONCERT LIVE FROM FILMORE EAST IS LEGENDARY. A MUST TO REALLY APPRECIATE THEIR TALENT. Anything from this concert will show you how GREAT OF A LIVE BAND THEY WERE. That's GREGG Allman playing the piano and singing, his brother DUANE on lead guitar. They were infamous for their jam sessions at the time. Most of their music in the early days were written by Gregg.. Duane is a legendary guitarist who mastered the slide guitar . He died way too soon.

To follow the Allman Brothers legacy look for Tedeschi Trucks Band (Derek Trucks is the nephew of one of ABB’s drummers and played guitar in the last incarnation of the band) Also, Govt Mule, fronted by Warren Haynes who was a guitarist for the brothers in the 90’s & 2000’s

I used to have this album (Brothers and Sisters) on eight-track tape in my VW bug. And this was the greatest crusin' the freeway song that was ever written. I used to listen to that album over and over and never got tired of it. A classic album guys!!

Jay/Amber if you want to hear a jam. You got to react to the Outlaws green grass and high tides. It’s a vibe song. The 3 guitar assault is phenomenal. Continue what you guys do it really cool.

One of the best piano jams ever. Dickie Betts ended up firing the guy if you can believe that.

Do you know why??? Oh well, Chuck Leavell has done fine since then as piano player for the Rolling Stones for many years.

@@tracyyork1428Dickey did not fire Chuck Leavell (the piano player). He loved Chuck’s playing. This era of the band gradually fell apart in the next couple of years after this was recorded, for a variety of reasons: drugs, too much money and fame, competing egos, Gregg’s move to LA and marriage to Cher, and Gregg’s testimony in the drug trial of Scooter Herring (one of their tour guys). Basically they were all tired of one another and mutually decided to move on with their own projects. When the Allmans reformed in late 1978 they invited Chuck to join the band again, but by then he had his own band Sea Level and decided to stick with that.
