I've watched this a couple of times but it's always nice to play again while I'm working around the house. I'm from Southern Mississippi and it's so cool to hear all these Southerners speaking about their love of Orthodoxy. I sometimes wish I was a convert because they always have such a fire within them. I'm not a very good Orthodox man but I love our faith so much that I couldn't imagine ever not being Orthodox. I just wonder if I didn't have a Russian background if I would have come to the faith on my own like these folks did. Y'all are really an inspiration and I always tear up a bit listening to this. Thank y'all.

I was born in a conservative Catholic church, for over 20 years, then I converted to be a Protestant because of my husband, it was hard to switch but I was young and eventually the music, the people make it easier to accept all that, and it's been 15 yrs of going to the same church, they teach the bible verse by verse, there I learned so much about who really Jesus is and how to live a christian life, great church, it has helped me in my spiritual growth. But it has been 3 years since I've been feeling like going back to the catholic church, just bc there I felt closer to God, a connection with him, like I was entering to the Lord's house, reverence for God, something beautiful that I can't explain, that now I can't find it in my church. It was like ok I've been attending school for the last 15 years and nothing here? Where is my God? I felt like I was rebelling but not quite because I was reading my bible even more than before, all I wanted was to be closer to God I was willing to go back being a catholic if there was anything else but I've been searching and to me it looks like the orthodox church is trying to be as biblical as they can get and that is awesome!! While watching this video, at the very end I was in tears and couldn't stop, it was strange , why did protestants have taken away sooo much from the original church? why would they do that? I just realized it has been 15 years of not being in communion with God!! I knew deep inside there was something I was missing I just didn't want to listen, I guess that is something that would bring anybody to tears, I feel deceived. At church they told me how come you are not in communion, it must be you, don't want to surrender. I told them I tried. I 've even told them that it is great if it works for you, but I am getting no where and it is time to get serious. Enough of having the congregation sitting and listening for years, that is sad, that means they will never experience Jesus. It comes a time where you read your bible and the spirit tells you there is much more and you better obey. In their crazy idea of.. ohh this is not biblical.. ohh it is not in the bible , this comes from satan, and so on, it has left us in a stage of starvation, no wonder why children leave the faith, something is missing, and they know it, just don't want to admit it? I am not an orthodox yet but I am considering it, thanks for reading and forgive my bad english, God Bless

Growing up I was most closely acquainted with the Anglo-Catholic tradition so knew a little of the idea of Apostolic succession and always saw Anglicanism, at least parts of it, as a little different to other forms of protestantism. I think many protestant Christians fail to delve into pre-Reformation Christianity and when and if they do they discover the true fullness of the faith and realise Orthodoxy is the ancient Church that required no reformation. But while it's very easy to see the truth of Orthodoxy on an intellectual level it's only by attending Orthodox Churches and worship that you can really feel it.

I admire these people for searching so strongly until they came to Orthodoxy. I'm Orthodox and this is the most important thing in my life but I feel sometimes that it was simply handed to me. I grew up protestant and then become a Jesus scorning liberal open borders islam friendly homosexual only to discover God again. My life changed when I was converted again but after reading the new testament cover to cover i realised that the core message of protestantism as really just a belief of Jesus Christ (once saved always saved) and not really in tandem with works and a transformation in everyday life (some churches maybe but the emphasis is not their) - protestantism has really watered down the call to action of christians after hearing the gospel. I never really connected to just singing new Hillsong songs that come out every year and in the end i feel like the new testament is good enough at teaching and i don't need a minister to preach at me a story like "once i was in a grocery store and I couldn't find what I was looking for but then I found it and that is like how Jesus finds you like it says in this one verse in hebrews." In the end i resolved that i really didn't need to go to church to really live out the christian life. Now i'm discovery the deep and rich history of orthodoxy, the connection to the saints of great people that gave their lives for God's truth - histories that are barely touched on in protestant churches, confessions and the iconography that constantly reminds you of the historical epic that happened when God sacrificed his son, sacrificed himself and Mary sacrificed her Son for all of humanity. In the Bible, Paul talks about spiritual milk for beginners and i see that protestantism is great for an easy modern introduction to Christianity, but if you want a spiritual roast meal you'll definitely find it in orthodoxy. Of course there are lots of great protestants but in the end I think this once saved always saved nonsense and not as great an emphasis on taking responsibility for your sins in everyday life has definitely done more harm than good. Lots of love from Australia :).

What people don't understand about the Orthodox church is that idols or 'images' are used for a purpose, as a gateway to God by meditation. the Orthodox know that the physical use of images can be a way into another world. The physical can be used as a means to an end; union with the divine, beyond the physical world. Images are not idolatrous, they are tools, and the Orthodox church understands this very well.

One day a protestant preacher acquaintance of mine ( I went to his fundamental church) , quoted Eusebius in which a saint criticized the Emperor Theodosius for sinning "after receiving the body and blood of Christ".. I asked the church elders about this reference to 'transubstantiation'. Their reply was , that Constantine created a syncretism, an amalgamations of Greek and Roman mystery religions with Christianity. I asked, "If what you say is true then their should be no reference to Roman Catholic/ Orthodox traditions-beliefs- church structures- - sacraments- priesthood and above all, no reference to the Eucharist as anything other than a commemorative meal, such as I believed as a former Catholic converted to an Evangelical, fundamental protestant. By grace and mercy I had been even transformed from a pagan-hedonistic biker to a Christian school teacher. But my research into this church history, especially Polycarp, showed that the Orthodox/Roman Catholic traditions, tenets and church structure were in place and prominent from 100 to 300 AD. There were robed and mitred bishops, Transubstantiation Eucharist rites and ceremonies etc, being promoted by writers who were the actual students of the Apostles and disciples. Men who were acquainted with the Apostles and disciples personally or had just been taught by students of the Apostles were advocating Orthodox beliefs and traditions. And advocating this doctrine as often a lethal profession, the Roman government would periodically try and eradicate his treasonous sect of Christianity declaring that any religion not sanctioned by the emperor is tantamount to rebellion and treason. And so men like Polycarp were given a choice to renounce their faith or suffer martyrdom. Their faith was stronger than their fear of death, and that faith can not be sustained if one is promoting a falsehood. But the final question is, If you believe that the holy saints, bishops, monks and scholars at the Councils of Nicaea (325) and Chalcedon (371) were so credible , and their lives modeled Christian integrity, holiness and scholarly erudition that to this day we still believe in the various gospels, epistles and writings from the Torah that they compiled and codified were and are the infallible, God-breathed, inspirations of the Holy Spirit, then why not also believe their ideas of church government, structure ,beliefs in modes of worship and doctrines about sacraments? I suggest you read the pre-Constantine patristic church fathers, perhaps you will come to the same conclusion based on this evidence.

Great write-up Michael, but be careful of the use of the term transubstantiation. You are being a bit anachronistic. Transubstantiation is a Roman Catholic-only attempt to defend the Eucharist, and is post-East-West split. The Orthodox Church has never attempted to define the mystery of the Eucharist, other than to state that we believe it is the body and blood of Christ, no matter what it tastes like or what the chemical composition may be post consecration. It is this belief that Eusebius refers to, not transubstantiation that was derived centuries later by the Western Church.

I've known Jon Braun for many years and I applaud the faith community that he helped to establish built aroundAntiochian Orthodoxy. Orthodoxy's claim that it is the authentic new testament church is very much over stated.The eucharistic liturgy of St. John Chrysistom for instance, is from the 4th century, not the first. The orthodox teachingon the Virgin Mary does not date from the early church. The apostles and Paul didn't preach Mary, but Jesus and having a personal relationship with Him. I respect Orthodoxy as a true faith tradition, but it is not exclusively the true church of Jesus Christ. Tyrone Flanagan
@ownpetard8379
4 жыл бұрын
Lots to unwind here, Tyrone. The Liturgy of St John Chrysostom is 5th century. St Basil's Liturgy is 4th century. St James Liturgy is a bit earlier, the St Mark Liturgy a bit earlier than that, etc. Each built on the other or what preceded it. There is a common structure for the most part. There are precedents in the Acts of the Apostles and certain Epistles that give that +/- structure: instruction, prayers/litanies, thanksgiving and Eucharist. If Orthodoxy is not the true Church, it is suitable until you find another. As to "preach Mary", keep in mind that Mary is the mother of Jesus. That makes her more prominent than anyone else who lived at that time, other than Jesus, right? She lived well after Jesus' Resurrection. She was at Ephesus under the watch of St John. Jesus entrusted John with His mother's care at His Crucifixion, remember? Mary received visitors at Ephesus. So, the Church has had a Tradition (big T) that holy people, saints, have a special relationship with God. Just as we the living should pray for the dead (also Tradition), we can pray to the Saints for worthy things, as an intercessor to God.* Jesus' mother, Mary, is a Saint, who is worthy of veneration (not worship) and can be asked to intercede on our behalf to God. /* Think of it this way. Let's say you and your father have a disagreement, but your uncle is on good terms with his brother, your father. You would be wise to ask your uncle to smooth things over with your father, right? Same thing with Saints and God. Not a perfect analogy. Saints are attractive in that they were once people like you, whereas God is (a mystery). orthodoxwiki.org/Divine_Liturgy orthodoxwiki.org/Liturgy_of_St._James orthodoxwiki.org/Liturgy_of_St._Mark

The Orthodox Church was the only one that could claim direct descent from the Apostles? An article by Peter Gillquist acknowledges that the Roman Catholic Church has the same lineage, and indeed that's hard to deny. Peter and his allies decided the Catholics were on the wrong side in the "filioque" controversy! That seems a flimsy pretext, at which they grasped to maintain their evangelical prejudice against Catholicism, though I doubt they lost anything by not turning Catholic.

_"Now _*_we command you_*_, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye _*_withdraw yourselves from every brother_*_ that walketh disorderly, and not _*_after the tradition_*_ which he received of us._ - 2 Thessalonians 3:6 Every Eastern Orthodox Bishop is a successor of Saint Peter, _if_ he faithfully upholds Holy Tradition. The papacy is the successor of Judas and a forerunner of the antichrist. ~ ~ ~ The Heresy of Papism ~ ~ ~ *On this Rock* 3And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock *πέτρα* (petra) was *Χριστός* Christ (Christos)' - 1 Corinthians 10_3, 4 The Rock is _always_ Christ, in both the New and Old Testaments. There is no other Rock. Even when one man, the prophet Moses, led the entire nation of Israel through the wilderness for 40 years, the Rock was Christ. Matthew 16_18: AND *ON THIS*, THE ROCK, I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH καὶ ἐπὶ *ταύτῃ*, τῇ πέτρᾳ _and on _*_this_*_, the rock_ *ταύτῃ* _'this'_ is in the feminine gender - so it cannot be referring to Peter. In Matthew 16_18, the word 'this' refers to the *confession of Jesus as the Son of God*, that Saint Peter has just made in Matthew 16_16. The Rock = *Christ* _"For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, _*_which is Jesus Christ_*_"_ - 1 Corinthians 3_11 _"And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder."_ - Matthew 21_44 The Rock in scriptures (both the OT and NT) is always Christ. There is no other Rock, no other Foundation, no other Head. We (along with the Apostles and Saints) also share in the glory and reign of Christ - but _only_ in a derivative sense. In Matthew 16_18, the expression 'on this rock' is referring to the confession that Peter just made regarding Christ as the Son of God. Only in a derivative sense does it apply to Saint Peter, and in this derivative sense it applies equally to all Apostles and Orthodox Bishops. Every Eastern Orthodox Christian who upholds firmly the Orthodox Faith is also rock. Conversely, any who dare to depart from the fullness of the Orthodox Faith, even a bishop, is not a rock but a stubble carried in the wind having drifted away from the True Rock the Lord God. This is why Saint Paul had little regard (*none*) to the titles of the apostles when they were wrong concerning the gentiles, even publicly disparaging the 'so called' titles with embarrassing sarcasm in his writing. "But of these who _are accounted_ (*δοκούντων*) to be something, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: *God accepteth no man's person*:) for they who _are accounted_ (*δοκούντων*) something in conference added nothing" - Galatians 2_6 "And when James, Peter, and John, who _are accounted_ (*δοκούντων*) to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision" - Galatians 2_9 "But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which _are accounted_ (*δοκούντων*) to rule over the Gentiles *exercise lordship* over them; and their great ones *exercise authority* upon them. But so shall it *NOT BE among you*" - Mark 10_42, 43. The apostles are commanded by the Lord *not* to set one of them above the others. "But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him *to the face*, because he was to be blamed" - Galatians 2_11 This doesn't sound to me like the decorum due to a pope. No PAPAL SUPREMACY in the days of the Apostles when Saint Peter was walking on the earth in the flesh. Is the pope greater than Saint Peter? Christ specifically *forbids* the apostles from exercising authority over the other apostles, or considering oneself a teacher over the other apostles - "for you have *One Instructor*, the Messiah." Is the pope greater than Christ? _"Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God"_ - 2 Thessalonians 2_4

+Godly Mathew no, that is incorrect. They may be "valid" bishops, but they are not all successors of St. Peter. Are all" orthodox bishops"successors of the Archbishop of Constantinople? Lastly, that Rock argument you give, is the same nonsense the protestant heretics use to justify their irrational position.

Giovanni Serafino you should read the patristic writings on the 'rock' passage. there is a great diversity of interpretations on this passage, especially amongst the pre-schism Church Fathers of the west. see below the ROCK is always Christ. the rock in this passage refers to Peter's confession of Christ as the Son of God. in a derivative sense, the rock can be said to be Saint Peter and in the same derivative sense, the rock can be said to be the Apostles, and by extensions their successors the Bishops. the papacy as it came to be defined in the post schism west (_papal supremacy_, _papal infallibility_, and _papal ecclesiology_) simply did not exist during the centuries from which those quotes are pulled from. so any attempt to quote from the fathers to prove the western papacy will be anachronistic. the truth is the Church Fathers expressed a range of opinions on the Rock passage and Saint Peter. while Rome was still Orthodox (most of the first millennia) it was worthy of being referred to by many praise worthy appellations, including the 'See of Peter' because of its fidelity to the Apostolic Faith (ORTHODOXY). once rome fell away, it has neither primacy, nor honor, nor priesthood. - - - For the Orthodox Christians Saint Theophylact's (11th Century) commentary on the Gospels pretty much sums up the Fathers. Here is Blessed Theophylact's commentary on Matthew 16_19. *_19. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of the heavens: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in the heavens; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in the heavens._* _He spoke as God, with authority, "I will give unto thee." For as the Father gave you the revelation, so I give you the keys. _*_By "keys" understand that which binds or looses transgressions, namely, penance or absolution_*_; for _*_those who, like Peter, have been deemed worthy of the grace of the episcopate, have the authority to absolve or to bind_*_. Even though the words "I will give unto thee" were spoken to Peter alone, _*_yet they were given to all the apostles_*_. Why? Because He said, "Whose soever sins ye remit [see footnote 1 below], they are remitted." [see John __20:33__]. Also, the words "I will give" indicate a future time, namely, after the Resurrection. "The heavens" also mean the virtues, and _*_the keys to the heavens are labors_*_. For by laboring we enter into each of the virtues _*_as if by means of keys that are used to open_*_. If I do not labor but only know the good, I possess only the key of knowledge but remain outside. That man is bound in the heavens, that is, in the virtues, who does not walk in them, but he who is diligent in acquiring virtues is loosed in them. Therefore let us not have sins, so that we may not be bound by the chains of our sins._ [^1] John 20:33 - 'Whose soever sins *ye remit* [ἀφῆτε is plural] , they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins *ye retain* [κρατῆτε is plural], they are retained.' - - - here are some additional quotes from the Fathers: St. Augustine’s Retractations: "In one place I said... that the Church had been built on Peter as the Rock... *but in fact it was not said to Peter, Thou art the Rock, but rather Thou art Peter*. The Rock was Jesus Christ, Peter having confessed Him as all the Church confesses Him, He was then called Peter, the Rock ...Between these two sentiments let the reader choose the most probable." (13th Sermon; Contra Julianum 1:13) Again, in the same work: " *Peter had not a primacy over the apostles*, but among the apostles, and Christ said to them *I will build upon Myself, I will not be built upon thee*." St. Jerome:, " *Christ is the Rock* Who granted to His apostles that they should be called rocks. *God has founded His Church on this Rock*, and it is from this Rock that Peter has been named." (6th book on Matthew) and again, "The word Rock has only a denominative value - *it signifies nothing but the steadfast and firm faith of the apostles*." (Upon St. John, Book JJ, Chap. XII) And again, "We must not believe that the city of Rome is a different church from that of the whole world. Gaul, Britain, Africa, Persia, the East, India, all the barbarous nations, adore Jesus Christ, and observe one and the same rule of truth. If one is looking for authority, the world is greater than one city. Wherever there is a Bishop, be he at Rome or at Eugubium, at Constantinople or at Rhegium, at Alexandria or at Tanis, *he has the same authority, the same merit, because he has the same priesthood*. The power that riches give, and the low estate to which poverty reduces, render a Bishop neither greater nor less." (St. Hieron. Epist. 146 ad Ev.) St. Hilary: " *The Rock is the blessed and only rock of the faith confessed by the mouth of Peter*. It is on this Rock of the confession of faith that the Church is built." (2nd book on the Trinity). St. Ambrose: "As soon as Peter heard these words, 'Whom say ye that I am?' remembering his place, he exercised this primacy, a primacy of confession, *not of honor*; a primacy of faith, *not of rank*."
