I remember working on several of those units over the years. The plastic worm gears on the motors would crack and the motor shaft would spin inside the gear. Great video as always. I'm loving my Blue ESR meter. Back in the 90's, a Circuit City moved into the plaza that our main shop was in. We all thought that would kill our business until we found out how much they charged for repairs. Any time a customer would bring something in with a Circuit City repair tag, we would jack up our normal price about 30% and still get the job.

Thanks Dave, Glad you picked the Blue ESR meter. I love mine. I did warranty work for Circuit City and Best Buy in the early 90's and 00's when they didn't want to send the items to there service center almost 200 miles away.

@@norcal715 When I was assembling my ESR meter, I dropped one of the decimal point LEDs and it went flying into the debris field under my workbench. I looked for it for a good hour, then gave up. I ended up pulling an LED out of a junk board, so one of my decimal points is yellow.

See your doctor immediately if your audio gets gargled. Choking hazard for sure! Nice video and repair as always!

Question - Hope you are still monitoring this..... After retiring an XL-M505 due to circuitry issues, we acquired an XL-M407 from my mother-in-laws estate. When applying power, its symptoms were identical to your video, which was "a great help"; after removing the 3 scissor brackets, I also found a stuck CD and was able to get it back in place. NOW, this issue has become getting all the scissor brackets in alignment without the others falling back out of place. Spent several frustrating hours and am back to square one. Do you recall which scissor brackets to start with for reassemble? The front, right side, left side, etc. I'm a retired NASA engineer and fully understand the goal, just having a hard time getting there. Thanks.

I brought my XL-M403 out of hibernation and it worked great. Once. Now I turn it on and I get what sounds like a muted clothes dryer alarm. Won't read either the single tray or the cartridge. Any help appreciated.

I have a JVC XL-M403K and it plays perfectly but will not eject. I watched this episode and I was able to take the cover off and eject it manually. I cannot figure out why it doesn’t eject. Any suggestions?

My +1 tray won't open, there is no cartridge in it right now. I'll open it to see if there is a disk loose.

Well I made the problem worse ha ha, I managed to free up the single tray, the belt was fine and it ejects fine now. But I powered it up before getting everything back in the right spot, and it seems the gear to load the trays in/out was damaged, I am trying to get the gear to see if it can be replaced. Also a problem with the large gate to raise and lower the whole mechanism, it moved and a white carrier piece popped out with two micro switches under it. now I can't figure out how to get it back correctly. Don't do what I did.

Why I like Carousels better than these magazine loaders. What a headache. That is designed in failure modes waiting to happen. A stupid design really. Overly complex and prone to failure. Singles or carousels, and that is it, anything else is just asking for trouble and these magazine ones get older, they just get worse. Not a fan. Get the Single disc version of the XL line as it was a Stereophile recommended component class C at the time. They sound great, and are affordable. I think it was the XL-1050TN I think. But these magazines type, basically no thanks.
