The only thing better than a Kackie video is a Kackie K Beauty video. I got on the K Beauty train around 2018 and never looked back. It started with SPF and affordable toners and serums, and now a majority of my skincare and makeup is beauty from Asia. The formulas are so innovative and unique - they do all the cool stuff 3 years before any north american or european brand clues in.

So many of the K Beauty lip tints are the same as the Rare Beauty Iip oils. Anything with lasting tint or glossy tint is the same sort of formula, almost every k Beauty brand sells a version of the product. Kbeauty products tend to lean towards the lower pigment end of the spectrum because most Koreans like very natural makeup compared to other countries, even compared to China, and the colors tend to be within the very pastel range because of how homogeneous the people are and the general skin lightness (though, colorism and issues when it comes to diversity are prevalent and the excuse that every person can fit between #21-#25 still doesn’t extend to every Korean as there are definitely more tan koreans). There definitely are more high impact brands in terms of pigment (Clio comes to mind in terms of their shadow formulas) but especially lately a lot of kbeauty has been even sheerer than ever because of the concept of personal color taking over and many brands catering to people who look very made up with very little product. So interesting to see your view on these formulations from such a different lens !
@oryxs
Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but as a korean I feel that your comment on "how homogenous the people are" is an overgeneralization. like you've said, there are many koreans with deeper medium tan skintones and I'm not sure what you mean by "colorism and diversity doesn't reach them" but many are forced to use lighter foundation shades because companies are literally *choosing* to only release 2-4 shades. Also you definitely see comments in videos with new kbeauty releases and there's koreans who are all "that's a pretty palette but most of the shades won't show up on me". imo the "fair skin is best" korean beauty standards and big companies not bothering to challenge the status quo are what is producing these lamentable shade range and chalky palettes.

I am a huge fan of Japanese and Korean makeup style, mainly because I can relate with some of their highlighting points on doing their makeup, like the tears-bag and the eyebrows. Although I am not east Asian, I have some similar features like my eyes (I am native american), so a lot of their approaches for makeup I find quite fitting to my personal aesthetic, however the whitening base is something that I just can't comprehend although I am knowledgeable on their beauty background and reasons why, especially japanese makeup; and the blush situation... I am a Victorian doll/illustration blush kinda gal, I LOVE blush, big round and taking over almost all of my cheek's area, and K/J-beauty using those pale ass barely there blushes is such a put off for me. lol I get the brightening of the cheeks with a very cool toned blush, but those almost withe or blue... not for me. lol
@onipot9639

I relate to the eye thing so much! I am half Iranian with very almond shaped eyes and J/K beauty styles really work for me way better. There are defo some darker and richer blushes out there, they aren't all pastel pink :), I would try the canmake blushes they have some really rich yummy colours. They tend to in general have more sheer/buildable textures though, but they are great to sort of build up with in a painterly way. I agree the whitening thing is really problematic, but most of the time (although not always) they actually mean brightening. If you see base products that claim to "white up" usually they mean brighten, like colour correcting. Blue-white/purples are common to colour correct sallowness, which is a more common concern in some east Asian skintones (and actually mine also). BUT, don't get me wrong, there is a definitely a rhetoric around pale whiteness which is problematic, and I don't support that!

I'm very desaturated cool olive, not pale by any standards, and lighter K-beauty and C-Beauty blushes are my jam because they act as 'expanding' shades in the middle of the face to add more volume, which i need. The alternative would be to use a brightening concealer and hope it brings a more midtone blush up in value, but that's two steps :P plus crossing your fingers hoping the formulas gel together

I rely on a different sunscreen from Skin 1004, the cica water serum in the pump-top tube. It's basically lotion with a natural finish and no scent. If you try that one and find yourself wanting something more moisturizing, Beauty of Joseon and Birch Labs have sunscreens with the same actives in richer bases. There was an uproar back in 2020 when it came out that a lot of popular Korean sunscreens didn't have the advertised SPF, but Skin 1004 gets their formula through a company that's considered highly reputable and uses 3rd party labs to confirm that you're getting the SPF on the label.

There are virtually no bronzers in K-beauty since the aesthetic is to appear fairer, not more tanned. There *are* some very nice grayish contours for fairer skin tones, but even that category isn’t huge. It is absolutely wild that so few brands offer anything useful for someone who is NC25 or deeper…even among those who are East Asian, there are plenty of people who cannot use the really fair shades.

as a long time fan and user of k- & j beauty , a lot of brands aren’t consistent across the board with either cosmetics or skin care. but many have a hero product or 5. there’s so much to choose from and so many variants (esp for those w sensitive noses, and no extra blending time). but i find most success with korean skincare, and i do like what cosmetics i’ve tried for my ghostly skin but it’s been mostly liquid products. i do love the Nacific tinted lip glows, a lot of haru haru, real barrier, thank you farmer(and so many more) skin care. but the spfs simply cannot be beat. its rare to use so many and love most! it’s a lot of trial and error, thanks for sharing these offerings, i loved your look! oh as a dry skinned person to another, you might love some of the night moisturizing stuff -sleep masks and such. and use them on your neck too! centella is so good! eta::the peach blossom overnight mask is what i was trying to remember! stylevana has

Kbeauty eyeshadows tend to be ethereal. Light matte + *chunky* glitter. This eyeshadow formula/pigment level is the standard if you look at their makeup style. Unleashia and rom&nd are known for their eyeshadows (esp glitter) In general, Kbeauty is more affordable than makeup in America so I don't think they are considered particularly affordable brands. From what I've seen, the eyeshadow palettes tend to top out around $30USD +/-.

Peach scent, anything that's not actual peaches, smells like cat pee to me, so I wonder if all of these scented products would have that effect on my nostrils. 😝 A lot of the color cosmetics in these lines are washes of color, rather than the slap upside the head pigment that seems to be a big deal with a lot of youtubers, and younger generations. It's why I long loved using blushes, bronzers, and highlighters around my eyes before I'd go in with eyeshadow. Truth be told, I don't like highly pigmented eyeshadows. That said, I have no qualms with where you apply your eye products. I totally get what you're saying. Some of us have eye/lid/facial feature issues that look best with certain application methods, and we don't want to do things that make our eyes look lifeless, smaller, etc. Ya, I've used the CLIO mascara, but I can't stand removing it. Trying to keep a hold of what few lashes I have left, which are anemic, dying brambles. Blergh. The setting fixer spray, which sounds glorious in your description of the scent, has castor oil.😭 My fav contour, btw, is MISSHA smoked hazel, and it's very muted, and works with my HLP adjacent skintone. The downside is that talc is the first ingredient, so if I could find a talc-free powder version, or a cream or liquid version with ingredients my skin doesn't balk at, I'd snag them. So, Goo Gone on that sticker? Thanks, Kackie!

I don't think there are enough KZitemrs that regularly test KBeauty imo, not in a way where I can feel confident buying very many brands anyway other than Skinfood, Missha, Peripera, and Etude House. But yeah, bronzer is used a tiny bit in Korea, but it's subtle, like everything else. Not only do they like more natural makeup, but schools are pretty strict about makeup, so girls have to be super careful it's not obvious or they have to wash it off. Regardless, it means their makeup is more friendly to us pale girls that can look like a clown way too easily lol.

This is probably the best K-beauty video I've seen. Or at least the most informative/helpful for me. I've stayed away from k-beauty in general, because they seem to have a lot of glitter and I've learned that glitter makes my eyes burn (yes, I'm the reason why packages say the whole "don't put glitter near eyes"). That said, no one else has ever mentioned smells and my skin/nose/head is so sensitive to smells that its not even funny. Like I can't even do vanilla smelling products without skin issues and a lasting headache (BTW, huge thanks for always mentioning whether or not a product smells. I find it super helpful). I've always wondered about the magic, because it seems to an issue the Korean skin care (it having scents). So, I think I'm going to stick to my western products. And, yes, another adult that thinks frozen is just not good. Not even the music. I always felt alone in that category (Moana is favorite)
