Full excerpt here: Both warriors stopped suddenly when two figures appeared in front of them. At the same moment, Diocletian raised his spear and placed it precisely on the throat of one of the refugees. The sharp tip hissed with a loud metallic sound after being cut swiftly through the air. "Holy unity!" Zephon shouted through the vox. "What are you doing?" Diocletian looked down into the wide eyes of a boy who was no more than seven or eight standard Terran years old. The figure next to the child was even smaller: a girl, judging by the similarity in skin color and facial features, the boy's sister. Diocletian wasn't sure though, he wasn't good at estimating the age of unmodified people. The girl looked up at the custodian, eyes wide with terror. A scream came from the crowd, her horrified mother. The children only stood there with their mouths open and their lips trembling. Diocletian pulled his blade back from the boy's throat and activated the loudspeaker on his helmet. "I apologize," he said with stiff formality. The children flinched when they heard his raw voice that was distorted by the vox. Zephon made a slow movement to remove his helmet. When the mother reached her children, he stood before them with his head being visible. The boy resisted his mother's attempt to move the children away. He pulled away from her and stood in front of Diocletian again. "Are you the Emperor?" Diocletian was motionless. "Is that a joke?", he asked. Zephon looked at the boy with a bittersweet smile. Slowly he knelt before him and his red battle armor made a loud sound. Even kneeling, he towered twice over the boy. "No, child," replied the Blood Angel. 'He is not the emperor. But he knows him very well." The boy's tears streamed from his eyes. The appearance of the armored giants in front of him overwhelmed his senses - mighty red and gold and the sound of the activated armor. Awe was written on his young face. Awe and despair and an expression of fear. Diocletian would have told Zephon his anger about the vox had he still had his helmet on. "What's your name, boy?" "Darak." "Darak," repeated the Blood Angel. 'My name is Zephon. And as big as my companion may look here, he is not the Emperor. What did you want, child?” The boy stuttered: “I… I wanted to ask the Emperor when we can go home. My parents are still there. They stayed behind when we got on the evacuation ships." Diocletian glanced at the woman protecting the little girl. So she was not her mother. The structure of her face, however, had family resemblances, so there was a genetic relationship. An aunt or an older cousin, maybe. He switched off the crosshair of his targeting system that swirled over her dirty face and was no longer interested in her. Zephon continued. "I see," he said. "And what's the name of the world you come from?" " We come from Bleys." Zephon nodded as if he knew the world well. Diocletian doubted that one legionary of the IX. had set foot on this world. A useless province. "Then you've traveled far," said the Blood Angel. “Welcome to Terra, Darak. You're safe here." "For now.", Diocletian thought. "What are your parents' jobs?" Zephon asked the boy. "If they fought, are they soldiers?" The boy nodded. "They fought the gray machine people from Mars." "My parents are warriors, too," Zephon said, ignoring the fact that they had died in the radioactive poisoned deserts of Baal's second moon over a century ago. They had long been dust in the desert wind. The boy looked at Diocletian. "Are your parents soldiers too?" "No," said Diocletian. “They've been dead for a long time. My mother was a slave. She died because of dysentery. My father was a barbarian king, executed by the Emperor because he defied the principles of unity. ” “ The… what?" “ Our conversation is over.", Diocletian said to the boy. Darak narrowed his eyes and looked at Zephon again. 'I want to go back to my parents. I want to ask the Emperor to send the legions, ” he said. “The Emperor could send you, right?” “He could” Zephon agreed, “and maybe he will. I'll ask him about his plans for your planet the next time I'm in front of him. ” Diocletian felt sick from hope in the boy's eyes. He was all too aware of the many eyes that were on him during this absurd conversation. "Our duty is waiting," he said urgently. "Indeed," replied Zephon. “Well, Darak, I have a duty to do to. Thanks for taking the time to speak to me. ” The boy nodded silently. Zephon put his helmet back on. His voice sounded hard and scratchy through the vox grille of his helmet. "Take care of your sister, Darak." Darak ran to his aunt and sister, who was still sobbing quietly at the horror Diocletian had given her. Diocletian and Zephon went on. "You are using worthless emotions," Diocletian voxed to his new companion. He heard Zephon's sigh. “You said I disappointed you, Custodes. I assure you, I feel the same way. I didn't expect a conversation with one of the ten thousand to be such a soulless conversation. ” Diocletian did not think this deserved an answer.

There's a special irony in the fact that the Custodes who seemingly has the social skills of a brick wall being named Diocletian, considering the Emperor Diocletian who his namesake came from was most known for his oratory skills and persuasion to such a point he was one of VERY FEW Roman Emperor's who not only survived their reign without being assassinated or killed on a campaign but who retired to grow cabbages and actually scoffed at the notion of retaking the throne when an emissary from Rome visited him in his twilight years BEGGING him to rename himself as Augustus once more.

you could say he is somewhat of a failure, or a sub-standard of the 'potential' you could have. A regular space marine had more humanity than a being that is a few steps away from the Primarchs, the very protectors and guardians of the Emperor... and that's perhaps a fault since the emperor don't have guardians around him that are 'as human as humans can get' and that connection is thus lost. Hence the extreme-response to anything religious and not understanding it's a natural response of regular-humanity to seek 'something higher' than themselves when in dire straits or in deep suffering.

Custodes vary, but many are self-important, impatient, and unempathetic if you aren't someone important. Other's are more grounded and open to conversation with even basic human's surrounding them, like Valdor and his comfort of even a traitor to the Emperor in regards to her Son (though not a traitor like the Horus Heresy saw, where Constantin rages out like the Hulk). Astartes also vary, but the Loyalist Chapter's that embrace the Emperor's Vision tend to be pretty good dudes, if you are human and not a Traitor. The Blood Angel's particularly have quite strong empathy and humanity due to their constant struggle with the Red Thirst and the Black Rage (though the latter is true only after Sanguinius dies), and Sanguinius was on of the most human Primarch's as well (he literally tells everyone at the final stand of the Imperial Forces on Terra that they have fought enough, and they can leave if they want to be with their families or loved ones). This Custodian is relatively young, for a Custodes, and is also likely preoccupied with the fact that the Emperor's vision is falling down around them with the Emperor, and Terra itself, threatened by Horus' Betrayed. The Custodian is also probably ultrapissed that the Blood Angel isn't as depressed and mopey as him. This wasn't really a good time for the Custodes as a whole, they felt vindicated in their issues with the Primarch's and the Astartes, and ended up increasingly bitter until they almost broke with the "death" of the Emperor (literally Rogal, Valdor, and a bunch of other Custodes are just outright weeping uncontrollably while carrying His body to the Golden Throne). So, that's probably why the Custodian is short with the boy, but many Custodes are also just elitist pricks sometimes.

The funny thing is that Custodes are meant to be "ultimate" humans, as in they aren't like the Astartes, who have a complicated template for their genetic code taken from numerous sources (though obviously based in their Primarch) with humanity just being the basis for said template. Custodes don't have new elements to their DNA from external sources, they are just the pinnacle of what human's can be. An Astartes, as such, is less human, genetically speaking, than a Custodes, but the trials some Astartes go through make them more human than almost anyone. Specifically the Blood Angel's constantly suffer from the Red Thirst and as such are desperately maintaining their humanity through any means to avoid becoming monster's. Sanguinius was also most chill of the Primarch's bar maybe Guilliman, as long as you weren't a Daemon or looked like Horus, because then the Black Rage might manifest and turn Sanguinius into Guts. So it's ironic that Custodes are often elitist and unempathetic, because they have the basis to be, yes they feel differently due to their Transhuman state (also most of their feeling is geared towards the Emperor), but this is far more extreme than you might expect. Only Custodes like Valdor really show compassion, or something approaching to it, and this is likely due to his fucked up Spear that the Emperor forced him to use which constantly plays back its victims memories to Valdor whenever he stabs them. The Custodes are pretty distant from their emotions, but it's more to do with their vocation, purpose, longevity, and culture than it is their Transhumanity. Astartes can be far more monstrous by nature, but still retain more humanity because they actually strive to do so.

@@AveSicarius Ever heared the phrase "Ignorance is a bliss" ? Well this applies literally to 40k. That's the one thing that would make them below the salamanders...they wouldn't go AS far if the losses outweigh the benefits. He was so far beyond normal human that he barely spoke in simple sentences. Or maybe he was starting to lose it. So much knowledge, philosophy and freestyling to achieve as much as imperium possibly could before time runs out. Even superhumans can't run from time and the great crusade was rushed with little concern and thought given for some Primarchs. Angron was damaged goods, Lorgar was right but humiliated publicly with other legion and Guiliman present, Perturabo was given horrible battlezones and had permanently been seeing Eye of Terror. Emperor could have been better father but didn t care about the consequences.
